In March 1650, a Spanish court painter sent a man into the Roman Pantheon to deliver his own portrait — and the assembled artists of Europe declared it not art, but truth. That painter was Velázquez. The man was Juan de Pareja, legally his enslaved assistant. The portrait now in Gallery 625 of the Metropolitan Museum of Art traces a 320-year journey from Rome to a Wiltshire country house to a record-breaking Christie's auction in 1970 — the first painting ever sold for more than £1 million. It is also the beginning of a story art history buried for centuries: Pareja went on to become an accomplished painter in his own right.

Wreckage and Witness: The Story of The Raft of the Medusa

In July 1816, the French frigate Méduse ran aground off Mauritania through the incompetence of a politically-appointed royalist captain. Of the 147 people abandoned on a makeshift raft, fifteen survived thirteen days of starvation, mutiny, and cannibalism. Théodore Géricault spent eighteen months transforming that atrocity into a 4.91 × 7.16-meter canvas — interviewing survivors, sketching the dead, shaving his head, keeping a severed head in his studio — that became the manifesto of French Romanticism. The painting won a gold medal at the 1819 Salon, earned 40,000 London visitors in 1820, and reached the Louvre in 1824 through an auction ruse orchestrated by Géricault's closest friend. It now hangs in Salle 700, Denon wing, as the permanent rebuke its creator intended.

In the summer of 1964, the nets of an Italian trawler hauled up a life-sized ancient Greek bronze from the floor of the Adriatic — a victorious athlete, mid-gesture, placing an olive wreath on his own head. The statue had been underwater for roughly two thousand years. It passed through a cabbage patch, a priest's bathtub, and a Luxembourg dealer syndicate before the Getty Museum bought it in 1977 for $3.95 million. Forty years of Italian court proceedings followed, culminating in a 2024 European Court of Human Rights ruling upholding Italy's right to confiscate the bronze. The statue remains in Malibu. This is the story of one of the rarest surviving objects from the ancient world — and the legal standoff that still surrounds it.

In the winter of 1876, James McNeill Whistler was asked to touch up the colors in a Liverpool shipping magnate's dining room. He kept going for six months — covering sixteenth-century Spanish gilded leather with Prussian blue, gilding carved walnut shelving with dutch metal foil, and painting the ceiling from a hammock — until the entire room became a single immersive painting. The result, Harmony in Blue and Gold: The Peacock Room (Freer Gallery F1904.61), is the only surviving intact Whistler interior, a masterwork of the Aesthetic Movement and Anglo-Japanese design.
