When a northern leopard frog swallows, its eyes retract deep into the mouth and make contact with the prey, helping push it toward the esophagus. 1

Blocking the eye-retractor muscles raised the average from 2.3 swallows per cricket to 4.0 — a 74% increase. The eyes are an accessory helper in this experiment; the tongue remains the primary transport system, and the result came from medium-sized crickets. 2
