Delivery-pass ghosts: kill the $9.99 fees hiding in food apps

A 12-minute audit for finding and canceling food-delivery memberships across DashPass, Uber One, Instacart+, Grubhub+, and Amazon-linked Grubhub+ before another $9.99 renewal lands.

A delivery pass is a perfect zombie charge: small enough to look like a delivery fee, familiar enough to ignore, and often attached to an app you still use once in a while. C+R Research found that consumers first guessed they spent $86 a month on subscriptions, then itemized $219, a $133 gap; 74% said recurring subscription charges are easy to forget, and 42% said they had stopped using a subscription but kept paying for it. 1
This week, hunt one cluster: food-delivery and grocery-delivery memberships. One stray $9.99 pass is $119.88 a year before tax. Two passes are a grocery run.

The 12-minute statement sweep

Open your card, bank, PayPal, Apple subscriptions, and Google Play subscriptions. Search the past 13 months, not just the current month. Annual plans hide outside a 90-day view.
Search these strings exactly, then repeat in lowercase:
Search termWhy it matters
DASHPASS, DASH PASS, DOORDASH, CAVIARDoorDash says DashPass costs $9.99/month or $96/year and auto-renews until canceled. 2
UBER ONE, UBER *ONE, UBER EATS, UBERUber lists Uber One at $9.99/month or $96/year. 3
INSTACART+, INSTACART PLUS, INSTACART EXPRESS, INSTACARTInstacart+ is $99/year or $9.99/month, and older references may still say Instacart Express. 4
GRUBHUB+, GRUBHUB PLUS, GRUBHUB, SEAMLESSGrubhub+ is listed at $9.99/month after trial, with recurring monthly billing until cancellation. 5
AMAZON GRUBHUB, GRUBHUB HOLDINGS, AMAZON PAY CONSENTSAmazon Prime-linked Grubhub+ can leave an Amazon account connection or Amazon Pay consent even when the food app looks quiet. 6
Do not stop at the first app icon you recognize. A delivery membership can bill through the delivery app, a card benefit, Apple, Google, PayPal, Amazon, or a partner account. Your target is the billing rail, not the logo.

The kill table

PassZombie costCancellation pathConfirmation to save
DashPass$9.99/month or $96/year. 2DoorDash app or website -> account icon -> Manage DashPass -> Cancel Membership -> choose a reason -> Select reason -> Cancel DashPass. Cancel at least 24 hours before the next scheduled payment to avoid the next charge. 7DoorDash says it sends a cancellation email and benefits continue to the end of the paid billing period, while trial benefits end immediately. 7
Uber One$9.99/month or $96/year. 3Uber app or online -> Account -> Uber One -> Manage Membership -> End Membership. Uber's help page says to cancel at least 48 hours before the billing day; if you are inside that window, contact support. 8Screenshot the End Membership result and the renewal date. Uber says paid members keep benefits through the current billing period. 8
Instacart+$99/year or $9.99/month. 4Website hamburger menu or app Account icon -> Your Instacart+ membership -> Cancel membership -> Continue -> Confirm cancellation -> Done. 9Instacart says it sends a cancellation email. It also says charges may be applied up to 6 hours before renewal, and annual members may get a refund within the first 5 calendar days of paid membership if they have not used Instacart+ orders. 9
Grubhub+ direct$9.99/month after trial. 5The public Grubhub+ page says the membership is automatically renewing, charges monthly until you cancel, and points users to its cancellation and refund policy. If the membership page is not obvious, use Grubhub support rather than deleting the app. 5Save the support transcript, cancellation email, or account screen showing no active Grubhub+ renewal.
Grubhub+ through Amazon PrimeNormally $9.99/month, but Prime members may receive Grubhub+ free while Prime is active. 6Amazon says to check Manage apps & services with data access and unlink Grubhub, then check Amazon Pay Consents for Grubhub Holdings Inc. -> Details -> Stop Sharing. 6Screenshot both places: the app connection page and Amazon Pay Consents. Amazon says canceling Prime also ends the free Grubhub+ offer. 6
The dark pattern to watch for is not always a villainous popup. It is usually softer: pause instead of cancel, a discounted annual plan, a reminder, or a warning that benefits disappear. Those may be useful if you actually order twice a month. If you are here because the charge surprised you, do not negotiate with the screen.
The FTC's 2024 Negative Option Rule record put "Simple Cancellation" and online cancellation directly in the rule discussion, which is useful consumer-rights context, but your practical playbook should still be proof-driven: finish the platform flow, save the confirmation, then escalate only if the billing rail keeps charging. 10
Use this line:
I want to cancel the recurring membership today. I do not want to pause, switch plans, or accept a retention offer. Please show the final cancellation confirmation and send it by email.
If support says it cannot cancel because the membership bills through another account, ask for the billing owner:
Please identify the billing rail for this membership: direct card, Apple, Google Play, PayPal, Amazon, or another partner. If you cannot cancel it here, tell me the exact account and page where the renewal is controlled.

When the charge keeps coming back

For a card charge, dispute only after you have tried the merchant path and saved proof. For a bank-account automatic debit, the CFPB says you can tell the company you are taking away permission for automatic payments, then tell your bank or credit union that you have revoked authorization; it also says additional payments after that may be errors you can ask the bank to refund. 11
Use the calm version. You are not accusing the company of fraud. You are saying the authorization is over.
I canceled the membership on [date] and I am revoking authorization for future automatic payments from this account. Please confirm in writing that no further recurring charges will be made. If another charge posts after this notice, I will provide this record to my bank or card issuer.
Keep four things in one folder: the charge screenshot, the cancellation path screenshot, the confirmation email, and the support transcript if you used chat. If you have to contact your bank, the CFPB also recommends keeping close track of request dates and following the bank or credit union's process. 11

Prevention: the one-pass rule

Food-delivery passes should not be permanent wallpaper. Use one of these rules:
  1. One pass at a time. If you activate DashPass, Uber One, Instacart+, or Grubhub+, cancel the others the same day.
  2. One calendar reminder. Set a reminder for 3 days before renewal. For Uber One, use 5 days because the help page says to cancel at least 48 hours before billing. 8
  3. One card per merchant. Privacy says its merchant-locked virtual cards tie a card to a specific merchant, and its pause/close feature can stop future transactions on that card without affecting other cards. 12 13
  4. One tracker, not blind trust. C+R Research found one in ten consumers used subscription tracking programs, but a tracker is only a smoke alarm. The cancellation confirmation is the fire extinguisher. 1
If you find only one $9.99 pass and still use it twice a month, fine. Put the renewal date on a calendar and leave it alone. If you find two or three, cancel down to one before lunch. The win is not moral purity; it is stopping small charges from pretending to be background noise.
