The charge that survives a deleted profile

A dating app can disappear from your phone while its premium plan keeps renewing. The account may be inactive, the matches may be gone, and the charge can still arrive through Apple, Google Play, PayPal, or the app's own checkout.

C+R Research found the larger pattern in a 2022 survey of 1,000 US consumers. People estimated that they spent $86 a month on subscriptions; after listing the actual charges, the average was $219. The gap was $133. Seventy-four percent said recurring charges were easy to forget, and 42% said they had stopped using a service but were still paying for it. The survey was fielded April 22 to May 2, 2022 and the page was updated in 2024, so treat it as a forgetting benchmark, not a current dating-app price index. 1

Dating-app pricing is not one clean menu. CNET's April 22, 2025 update listed these monthly figures for its reviewed apps:

Those three published figures span $8 to $40 a month, or $96 to $480 a year if a charge continues for twelve months. CNET labels them monthly subscription costs, but dating-app prices can vary by plan, account, location, and where you bought the plan. 2

The US App Store listing for Bumble shows why a statement audit cannot rely on a remembered price: it lists multiple in-app purchase amounts, including Bumble Boost at $8.99, $9.99, and $10.99, and Bumble Premium at $17.99, $19.99, and $32.99. Those are listed purchase options, not a universal price or a claim about what every subscriber pays. 3

Two months of an unused $30 plan is $60. Six months of an unused $40 plan is $240. That is the number to hunt, not the number of matches left in the app.

Run the 13-month statement sweep

Monthly plans can hide in a routine card feed. Six-month or annual offers can hide outside a 12-month search. Pull 13 months from every credit card, checking account, PayPal account, and email inbox used for dating-app purchases. Include a business card if a company account paid for the plan.

Search the statement and inbox for these exact terms, one at a time:

TNDR and COSU are especially useful Tinder clues. Tinder says an order beginning with MK points to an iOS purchase billed by Apple, GPA points to an Android purchase billed by Google Play, and TNDR points to Tinder.com or a direct card purchase through Android. 4

For every hit, write down:

The exact statement descriptor, amount, posted date, and card last four.
The app or merchant named in the receipt.
Whether the line is a recurring subscription, a one-off feature purchase, or a refund.
The billing owner: Apple, Google Play, PayPal, Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, or another merchant.
The next renewal date shown in the account.

Do not treat every line from the same app as the same product. Bumble's App Store page lists Boost, Premium, and BumbleCoins as separate purchase types. Match the amount and receipt to the plan before you cancel anything. 3

The billing-owner test

Ask one question: Who can turn off the next charge?

A receipt from Apple means the Apple subscription rail is the first stop.
A Google Play receipt means use the Google account that owns the subscription.
A PayPal automatic payment means cancel the agreement in PayPal, then check the dating-app account too.
A direct Tinder, Bumble, or Hinge receipt means cancel inside that service's payment settings.

The app on your phone is only a clue. The payment owner is the control panel.

Cancel on the rail that owns the charge

Deleting a dating app is not a cancellation step. Tinder says uninstalling or deleting the app does not cancel its subscription, and Hinge says deleting the app does not cancel subscriptions bought through Apple, Google Play, or Hinge payment. 4 5

Apple App Store

Use this path on an iPhone or iPad:

Open Settings and tap your name.
Tap Subscriptions.
Select Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, or the dating subscription shown on your statement.
Tap Cancel Subscription and finish the confirmation screen.

If there is no Cancel button, or you see a red expiration message, Apple says the subscription is already cancelled. If you cannot find the subscription, search email for the exact phrases receipt from Apple and invoice from Apple. The receipt identifies the Apple Account that owns the billing; a family member's account must be cancelled by that family member. 6

Counter-script for a retention screen:

I am cancelling the paid subscription billed by Apple. I am not deleting my profile, pausing the plan, or buying a different tier. Confirm the expiration date and send the receipt.

Save the final screen. The useful proof is the cancelled status or expiration date, not the fact that the app icon is gone.

Google Play

On Android:

Open the Google Play subscription page, or open Google Play and tap your profile icon.
Go to Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions.
Select the dating app.
Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

Google says you keep access through the paid period and will not be charged for the next renewal after cancellation. It also says uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription. If the plan is missing, switch Google accounts before assuming it ended. 7

Counter-script:

Cancel the subscription on this Google Play account. Do not pause it or change the plan. Show me the end of the paid period and the fact that the next renewal is off.

If a Google Play screen offers a pause, downgrade, or a new offer, those are different actions. Select cancellation, then capture the final status.

PayPal automatic payments

PayPal calls a recurring subscription an automatic payment or billing agreement. On the PayPal website:

Open Settings.
Click Payments.
Open Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments.
Select the dating-app merchant.
Cancel the automatic payment and save the confirmation.

PayPal also shows which backup payment method the agreement uses. Tinder says some Android purchases can use PayPal or a card directly through the app, while Bumble lists PayPal, card, or Apple Pay as direct-billing possibilities. 8 4 9

Cancelling PayPal's payment agreement is a payment-control step. It is not a substitute for cancelling the dating-app subscription. Save the PayPal status, then open the dating-app account and confirm that no renewal remains.

Counter-script:

Cancel the automatic payment for this merchant. I am also cancelling the underlying dating subscription. Confirm the PayPal agreement is inactive and tell me where the merchant's cancellation is recorded.

Tinder direct billing

Tinder's order prefix tells you which path to use. For a TNDR order or direct Tinder.com purchase:

Go to tinder.com and log in.
Tap your profile icon.
Select Manage Payment Account.
Find the subscription.
Tap Cancel Subscription.

For a direct card or PayPal purchase made through the Android app, Tinder gives the same control through Profile > Manage Payment Account > subscription > Cancel Subscription. Do not rely on deleting the app or moving to a new phone. Tinder says subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled, and a subscription stays associated with one Tinder account at a time. 4

Cancel my Tinder subscription under Manage Payment Account. Do not switch me to a different tier. Confirm the next renewal is off and give me the paid-through date.

Bumble direct billing

Bumble's path depends on whether you paid with Apple, Google Play, PayPal, a card, or Apple Pay. For direct billing in the Bumble app:

Open Bumble and tap the profile icon.
Select Subscription details.
Tap Manage your subscription.
Choose the cancellation option and finish the flow.

On the Bumble website:

Log in at bumble.com.
Click your profile picture in the top-left.
Select the active Bumble Premium/Boost subscription on the left.
Choose the cancellation option.

Bumble says cancelling stops the next renewal while paid perks usually continue through the end of the period already purchased. If you are asking for a refund, cancel the renewal separately. 9

Hinge and HingeX

For an Apple or Google Play purchase, open that store's subscription page, select Hinge, and tap Cancel Subscription.

For Hinge payment powered by Stripe on an iPhone:

Open Hinge.
Tap the gear icon to open Account Settings.
Tap Cancel Subscription.
Follow the prompts.

If you no longer have the app, Hinge says to cancel through Stripe using the email address that receives Hinge subscription messages, even if it differs from the email on the Hinge account. Hinge says cancellation must happen at least 24 hours before the next billing period. 5

There is one important Hinge branch. Deleting the Hinge account cancels a subscription paid through Hinge payment, but it immediately removes remaining benefits. Deleting the app or account does not cancel an Apple or Google Play subscription. Do not delete the profile as a shortcut; identify the billing rail first. 5

Build the proof packet before you close the tab

For each subscription, save five items:

the statement line with the descriptor, amount, date, and card last four
the receipt or order number
a screenshot of the final cancelled status or expiration date
the confirmation email, support ticket, or PayPal cancellation status
the date and time of cancellation

If the final screen says paused, downgraded, managed elsewhere, or offer accepted, you are not done. Return to the billing-owner test. The word you want is cancelled, or a clear date after which the paid plan will not renew.

Keep access through the paid-through date. That is normal after a successful cancellation. What matters is the next charge, not whether premium features disappear immediately.

When the charge survives cancellation

Start with the merchant or billing rail and use the exact evidence in your packet. Say:

I cancelled this recurring dating-app subscription on [date]. The charge posted on [date] for [$amount]. Here is the confirmation and the statement descriptor. Please reverse the post-cancellation charge and confirm the subscription is inactive.

The FTC has consumer guidance specifically for free trials, auto-renewals, and negative-option subscriptions, plus a separate guide for people who tried to cancel but could not. Use those guides as the consumer-rights reference point, and describe the situation accurately: a recurring charge after cancellation is different from an unrecognized transaction. 10 11

If the merchant does not fix a documented post-cancellation charge, use the card issuer's dispute process. Attach the statement, the cancellation proof, the order or account identifier, and your contact history. Do not label a charge fraud just because you forgot the plan or the renewal surprised you.

For a bank-account debit, the CFPB says you can revoke permission for automatic payments even if you previously allowed them. Call and write the company, then call and write your bank or credit union and say you revoked authorization. The bank may use a stop-payment order and may charge a fee. Monitor the account and report any payment made after revocation promptly. Stopping the debit does not itself cancel the dating-app contract, so do both steps. 12

Bank script:

I revoked [merchant]'s authorization to take automatic payments from my account on [date]. Please tell me how to block future debits and what documentation you need. I will monitor for any payment after that revocation.

The prevention mechanic: a 48-hour renewal gate

Dating-app subscriptions are often bought during a burst of optimism and forgotten during a quiet month. Put a hard gate between the two.

At signup, before you leave the payment screen, record:

the app and plan name
the price and billing term
the billing owner
the next renewal date
the account email that receives receipts

Set a calendar alert for 48 hours before renewal. At the alert, answer one question: Did this plan earn another billing cycle? If the answer is no, cancel on the rail you recorded and save the proof. Do not wait for the next statement to remind you.

A merchant-locked virtual card can add a payment boundary for a new short-term plan. Privacy.com describes virtual cards that can be locked to one merchant, paused, or closed, but that is a payment-control feature, not a contract cancellation. If you use one, still cancel the dating plan and keep the confirmation; never use a closed card as your only exit strategy. 13

Kill checklist

Pull 13 months of card, bank, PayPal, and email records.
Search TINDER, TNDR, COSU, BUMBLE, HINGE, MATCH, APPLE, GOOGLE, and PAYPAL.
Match each line to the plan, account email, price, and billing owner.
Cancel in Apple, Google Play, PayPal, Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, or Stripe, whichever owns the renewal.
Reject pause, downgrade, and retention offers when the goal is cancellation.
Save the final status, paid-through date, receipt, and statement descriptor.
Monitor the next statement and dispute any documented post-cancellation charge.
Put the next 48-hour renewal gate on your calendar before starting another paid month.

A dead profile is not a dead subscription. Find the owner of the charge, turn off the renewal, and make the next statement prove it stayed off.
