Punk is not one fixed uniform. It is a DIY vocabulary that keeps getting re-cut for new rooms, new bodies, and new levels of polish.
1. From shop to scene
Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren's 430 King's Road shops give the story a clear spine: Let It Rock opened in 1971, the shop became SEX in 1974, and Seditionaries arrived in 1976 as the Sex Pistols and the wider London scene made the look impossible to ignore. 1 2
2. The code
Leather, bondage trousers, torn knits, chains, safety pins, and heavy boots turned wear-and-tear into styling. The point was not a neat checklist; it was visible intervention: cut, fastened, distressed, and put back on differently. 1
3. The revival
Spring 2025 brought punk attitude into suiting at 5000, with metallic skirts, oversized blazers, reversible bombers, and asymmetrical sleeves. Fall 2025 pushed the same tension toward polished rock: Isabel Marant drew on Siouxsie and the Banshees, while Vogue's trend report called out belted leather and Altuzarra's studded A-line skirt. 3 4 5
4. Who wears it now
The current version is less about copying a 1977 look than borrowing its friction. Charli XCX's 2024 Met Gala Marni gown was patchworked from vintage T-shirts; Gabrielle Union's 2025 Proenza Schouler look used grommeted leather fringe and black boots; Olivia Rodrigo's 2025 London outfits paired plaid and a trench with chunky black lace-ups. 6 7 8
Punk's lasting move is simple: make the construction visible, then make it yours.
