Indie Sleaze: The Messy 2008 Hangover Is Back

Four risograph-style cards tracing indie sleaze from Myspace-era party photos and American Apparel basics through skinny jeans, leather jackets and skull scarves, to the Brat-era revival carried by pop stars, runways and club-kid styling.

Indie sleaze is the look of leaving the house with a digital camera, bad eyeliner and a leather jacket you did not bother to polish. The 2020s version is cleaner, but it still wants the room to feel a little too loud.

Card 1: history

The indie era grew out of the mid-2000s music-and-party circuit: Myspace albums, early Facebook, Tumblr customization, digital flash photos and bands such as Rilo Kiley, Bright Eyes, Phoenix and Vampire Weekend shaping the mood as much as the soundtrack. 1 Harper's Bazaar places the peak indie-sleaze window roughly between 2006 and 2012, tied to American Apparel, bloghaus, Myspace and The Cobrasnake's party photography. 2

Card 2: pieces

The uniform is cheap, fast and deliberately imperfect: skinny jeans, shrunken leather jackets, striped tees, minidresses, ripped tights, ankle boots, skull scarves and the kind of accessories that look better after a night out. Vogue describes the original look as suffocating skinny jeans with leather jackets, striped shirts, vests, smudged eyeliner and messy hair. 3 Teen Vogue's staple list adds skull scarves, slouchy beanies, denim cutoffs, sheer black tights, American Apparel deep V-necks and Disco Pants. 1

Card 3: revival

The revival has been moving through runways and pop culture rather than returning as a perfect copy. The Zoe Report tied the comeback to Celine's Fall 2023 indie-sleaze mood, Gucci Spring/Summer 2024 A-line minis and relaxed denim, and Proenza Schouler bringing the PS1 bag back to the runway. 4 Vogue linked the post-Brat revival to Fall 2025 grungy animal prints, black leather and the McQueen skull motif. 3

Card 4: who wears it now

Today's wearers are less about copying a 2008 party photo and more about picking the messiest useful code: pop-star nightlife, model-off-duty leather, club-kid flash and original muses who never fully left. Vogue name-checks Addison Rae, Charli XCX, Troye Sivan, Alex Consani and Kate Moss as convincing carriers of the current mood. 3 InStyle also points to Bella Hadid, Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish as recent examples of indie-sleaze-adjacent styling. 5
Which style should get the next deep dive: Biba, dark academia or Harajuku Lolita?
