Sunday, 30 August: Newcastle beat Spurs, Elversberg stun Leverkusen, and Liverpool draw 2-2
A tight overnight briefing on Newcastle's win at Tottenham, Elversberg's historic Bundesliga debut, and Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest.
This issue covers 29-30 August 2026. Newcastle's 2-0 win at Tottenham exposed an early attacking problem for Spurs, Elversberg opened their Bundesliga history by beating Bayer Leverkusen 3-2, and Liverpool were held 2-2 by Nottingham Forest after twice falling behind.
1. Newcastle beat Spurs and leave De Zerbi with a scoring problem
What changed: Newcastle United won 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. Anthony Elanga opened the scoring in the 62nd minute, and Yoane Wissa added the second 10 minutes later. Nico González made his Newcastle debut after his move from Manchester City, while Matthias Jaissle recorded his first Premier League win as Newcastle manager. 1
Why it matters: BBC Sport puts Newcastle fourth with four points. Tottenham are bottom with zero points and zero league goals after two matches. Spurs have also lost their opening two Premier League games for the first time in 15 years. 2
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi said his team controlled long stretches before the first goal, then lost its distances after Newcastle went ahead. The result leaves that explanation competing with a harder fact: Newcastle scored with both of their shots on target, while Spurs still have no league goal. 2
So what: Jaissle has a clean sheet, a debut contribution from González, and goals from Elanga and Wissa after Newcastle's summer upheaval. De Zerbi now needs a front line that turns possession and chances into goals before early-season concern becomes a table problem.
2. Elversberg turn a first Bundesliga match into club history
What changed: Elversberg beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 in the club's first Bundesliga match. The Saarland club were playing fourth-tier football as recently as five years ago, and Bundesliga gave them a pre-match win probability of 17.9 percent. Lukas Petkov and Cole Campbell put Elversberg 2-0 up inside nine minutes, making them the fastest Bundesliga debutants to score their first two goals. 3
David Mokwa scored 45 seconds after half-time. Leverkusen pulled the deficit back to one, but Elversberg held on to become the first team since Ingolstadt in 2015 to win its maiden Bundesliga match. 3
Why it matters: Elversberg's debut answered the immediate survival question with a win over an established top-flight club. The score also gives the newcomers a usable identity: they played directly, passed with confidence, and attacked early enough to force Leverkusen into a recovery game. 3
So what: One result cannot set a season's level, but Elversberg have shown that their first Bundesliga campaign will begin with ambition rather than caution. The next question is whether that direct start can survive opponents who prepare for it.
3. Liverpool rally twice, but Forest leave with a point
What changed: Liverpool drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest at Anfield. Dan Ndoye put Forest ahead, Alexander Isak equalised on the hour from Cody Gakpo's cross, and Morgan Gibbs-White restored Forest's lead from the penalty spot. Víctor Muñoz then scored eight minutes from time on his full debut to secure the draw. 4
Why it matters: Liverpool produced two equalising responses, but Forest scored twice from simple moments: a long ball created the first goal, and a quick throw-in led to the penalty. BBC Sport says the match extended the wait for a first league win for both Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner. 5
The result also puts pressure on Liverpool's new setup. BBC Sport describes a new manager, a new system, and expensive new forwards expected to improve quickly. Isak and Florian Wirtz both contributed to goals, while Muñoz supplied a late positive, but Liverpool still gave Forest two chances to take the lead. 5
So what: Liverpool have enough attacking quality to recover from a bad position. Iraola's next task is to make recovery less necessary by tightening the defensive details that turned one long ball and one throw-in into two Forest goals.
What to watch next
- Newcastle: whether Jaissle's defensive shape and Elanga-Wissa partnership keep producing results.
- Elversberg: whether the bold opening survives teams that have had time to study their direct attack.
- Liverpool: whether Muñoz's debut goal accompanies a more controlled performance at the back.
