Thursday, 27 August: Fenerbahçe seal the field, City land Bouaddi, and Sávio scores on debut

Thursday’s shortlist settles last night’s open Champions League ties, turns City’s midfield rebuild into club statements, and gives Sávio an immediate cup goal on debut.

What changed: The 2026/27 Champions League league-phase line-up is complete. On Wednesday, Fenerbahçe won 2-1 away at Lyon (3-2 aggregate), Viking beat Dinamo Zagreb 3-1 (5-3 aggregate), AEK Athens beat Levski Sofia 4-0 (4-0 aggregate), and Slovan Bratislava beat Celje 2-1 after extra time (3-2 aggregate). They join Tuesday’s qualifiers Sabah, LASK and Bodø/Glimt. 12

Fenerbahçe’s path was the highest-profile of the four. With the first leg level at 1-1, Vedat Muriqi and Archie Brown scored either side of half-time’s midpoint; Malick Fofana pulled one back for Lyon, but the hosts could not force extra time. UEFA notes it as Fenerbahçe’s first progress beyond Champions League qualifying since 2008/09. Viking reach the competition proper for the first time after Edvin Austbø and Tobias Moi turned the second half their way. AEK returned for the first time since 2018/19 through Luka Jović, a Barnabás Varga brace and a Răzvan Marin penalty. Cristian Martínez’s 100th-minute winner decided Slovan’s tie in Celje. 1

What changed: Manchester City confirmed the signing of Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille on a five-year deal through 2031, subject to international clearance. The club statement lists 96 Lille appearances, eight Morocco caps, and a shop listing for the No. 32 shirt. It does not publish a fee. The Guardian put the package at €95m (£81.4m) plus €5m in add-ons and called Bouaddi the most expensive teenager signed by an English club. 78

On the same day, City and Newcastle both confirmed Nico González’s permanent move to St James’ Park. Newcastle say the 24-year-old signed a long-term deal, will wear No. 6, and is the club’s seventh senior summer addition. The Guardian also reported that Omar Marmoush is set for a Tottenham medical on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy for an initial £50m, plus up to £10m in add-ons. Spurs have not published a club confirmation on that deal yet. 8

So what: Bouaddi and Nico are club-confirmed. The Marmoush half of the City-to-Spurs thread is still one medical and one Spurs statement away from matching Sávio’s completed move. Newcastle’s next useful checkpoint is when Nico is available under Matthias Jaissle.

What changed: Tottenham beat Charlton Athletic 5-1 in the Carabao Cup second round, and new signing Sávio scored on debut off the bench.
