Champions League draws, City's 4-1 win, and Villa's Mbaye agreement - 29 August 2026

Europe’s club season has moved from qualifying rounds to named opponents: UEFA completed the league-phase draws across its three competitions, Manchester City followed with a 4–1 win at Crystal Palace, and Aston Villa pushed their move for Ibrahim Mbaye into agreement stage.

What changed: UEFA held the 2026/27 Champions League league-phase draw in Monaco on 27 August. Each of the 36 clubs will play eight single-leg opponents, with four matches at home and four away. The opening matchday runs from 8 to 10 September. 1

UEFA then completed the Europa League draw for 36 teams, with its opening matches on 16 and 17 September. 3 The Conference League draw followed on 28 August. That league phase also has 36 teams, six matchdays and 108 matches, beginning on 5 October. 4

So what: The useful question has changed from who survives the qualifiers to which opponents shape each club’s autumn. City have two of Europe’s biggest names in PSG and Barcelona; Arsenal have Madrid and Bayern; Villa have PSG and Barcelona; Liverpool have Atlético and Inter. UEFA’s fixture list will add the dates and kick-off times, turning the draw into a real travel and rotation problem. 1

What changed: Manchester City beat Crystal Palace 4–1 at Selhurst Park on Friday, with Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki scoring twice each. Haaland opened with a header from an Antoine Semenyo cross. Cherki then scored either side of Yeremy Pino’s free-kick for Palace, and Haaland completed the score late. 5

City’s official report says Cherki had come off the bench to set up both goals in the opening win over Bournemouth. The French forward then started at Palace and produced two goals. 5

So what: Two wins give Maresca an early attacking pattern to test, with Cherki now central to the conversation and Haaland already back on the scoresheet.
