Goth Fashion: Darkness Becomes a Dress Code

Goth starts as a music scene, not a dress code. It grew out of late-1970s UK post-punk and took shape in the early 1980s around Joy Division, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and The Cure. Its visual language pulled from Victorian mourning: pale skin, dark eyes, theatrical silhouettes, and a taste for the macabre. 12

The wardrobe works through contrast: black lace, velvet, corsets, fishnets, distressed leather, and heavy boots. Trad goth leans into sharp hair and dramatic eye makeup; romantic goth softens the silhouette with deep red, lace, and corsetry. Current fashion coverage still names lace, leather, slip dresses, stockings, and platform boots as the easiest entry points. 134

The 2025–26 revival has two speeds. Dilara Findikoglu, Rick Owens, Bora Aksu, and Carolina Herrera pushed dark romance, lace, sculptural silhouettes, and Victoriana onto the autumn/winter runways; beauty looks at Kim Shui and Grace Ling translated the mood into cool-toned makeup and dark lips. Pinterest’s December 2025 trend report adds a measurable search signal: dark romantic makeup rose 160% year over year, gothic coffin nails 180%, vampire beauty 90%, Carmilla aesthetic 60%, and vampire haircut 40%. Jenna Ortega carried the polished version through her Wednesday Season Two promotion. Lola Young and Taylor Momsen brought black lace, monochrome dressing, opera gloves, and dark glamour to the 2025 MTV VMAs, while Tish Weinstock walked Dilara Findikoglu’s runway in corsetry and a veil. The community is still visible beyond celebrity styling: the May 2026 Whitby Goth Weekend drew up to 8,000 people to a twice-yearly celebration of the subculture. 346
