The Bacon Strip Settles Down
Listener notes
A bedtime-soft single-product spotlight for sliced bacon: the number sinks a little, while the grocery hook keeps pretending the receipt has only one mood.
BLS average-price data puts sliced bacon at $6.712 per pound in May 2026 and $6.561 in June, a 15.1-cent drop (about 2.3%). These are U.S. city-average estimates, not a quote from one store. 1
The June 2026 BLS CPI release, published July 14, reports the narrower bacon-and-related-products index down 1.5% from May and down 1.5% over twelve months. Food at home rose 0.2% for the month and 2.7% over the year, so the soft joke is allowed to coexist with mixed movement. 23
For quiet anchors, BLS average prices moved from May to June as follows: large Grade A eggs $2.191 to $2.141 per dozen, whole milk $4.217 to $4.317 per gallon, and white bread $1.830 to $1.814 per pound. 456
The USDA AMS Weekly Grocery Store Pork Feature Activity page lists an August 1–7 report published August 7, but its detailed report file was not accessible for this edition. No advertised-price claim is made here; the song stays with the verified BLS baseline. 7
Listen while making breakfast, folding a receipt, or letting one modest price drop lower the volume on the week.
Lyrics
[Intro]
Under the lamp, one quiet strip of red
May on the paper, June in the bed
The skillet is dreaming, the numbers move slow
A little less sizzle than yesterday's glow
[Verse 1]
May bacon, six point seven one two a pound
A hush in the package, a soft little sound
Fifteen cents down, the receipt clears its throat
And settles beside the old grocery note
Large eggs, two point one nine one in the town
[Pre-Chorus]
Six dollars fifty-six, June in the light
The bacon went lower, the joke stayed polite
[Chorus]
Everything went up again
Even while the bacon slipped by fifteen cents again
Everything went up again
A sleepy little hook with a questionable friend
Hush now, read the receipt
The numbers can disagree and still rock us to sleep
[Verse 2]
June bacon, six point five six one a pound
Two point three percent, quietly down
The bacon index fell one point five in the month
And one point five for the year, a very small thrum
The label says pork, but the data says hush
[Pre-Chorus]
No fireworks, no marching band
Just fewer cents beneath your hand
[Chorus]
Everything went up again
Though one breakfast favorite took the elevator down again
Everything went up again
Soft sarcasm keeps a warm and patient grin
Hush now, read the receipt
One modest little drop can make a softer week
[Bridge]
Milk climbed from four point two one seven to four point three one seven
Eggs eased to two point one four one, briefly forgiven
White bread held close, one point eight one four in June
While food at home rose point two beneath the moon
Two point seven for the year, the wider room
The pantry hums a mixed-up tune
[Verse 3]
The USDA pork page marked the week in view
August first through seventh, a report came through
But the detailed ad table stayed behind a closed door
So no sale-price story gets sung from the floor
Only the BLS numbers make the bed
And the bacon lowers its voice instead
[Final Chorus]
Everything went up again
Even while the bacon slipped by fifteen cents again
Everything went up again
The chorus wears a cardigan and calls it a trend
Hush now, read the receipt
Six fifty-six, let the little red package sleep
[Outro]
May to June, a softer line
Six point seven one two to six point five six one
Everything went up again
Until the next calm number comes in
