What to Stream: August 14–20, 2026
A decision-ready guide to the August 14–20 Netflix, HBO Max, Apple TV+, and Hulu arrivals, led by Don't Say Good Luck, Outer Banks Season 5, LION, and this week's strongest and weakest Rotten Tomatoes signals.
The short answer: the safest critical bet is Don't Say Good Luck, the biggest fan-service event is Outer Banks Season 5, and the clearest skip is The Shards. The week also has two promising but unrated HBO Max launches, an Apple TV+ finale with a usable season score, and a four-episode nature series that drops all at once.
The week at a glance
Rotten Tomatoes figures are a snapshot checked August 13, 2026. Scores can move, and a zero-review page means the title is not yet meaningfully scored — not that it has been reviewed badly.

Netflix: one heart-first movie, one last treasure hunt
Don't Say Good Luck — Aug. 14
Netflix's new coming-of-age dramedy follows Sophie Birenbaum, a high-school musical lead whose family life suddenly becomes more dramatic than the stage. The 93-minute film stars Sunny Sandler, Melanie Lynskey, Max Greenfield, and Stephanie Beatriz; director Julia Hart also co-wrote it. Netflix's weekly slate preview gives the runtime and cast, while Rotten Tomatoes lists a 100% Tomatometer from 15 reviews and no audience score yet.
Verdict: Watch It. A perfect early critic score and a manageable runtime make this the week's lowest-friction movie pick. The caveat is important: the Popcornmeter has no ratings yet, so the positive signal is critic-only rather than a settled audience consensus.
Outer Banks Season 5 — Aug. 20
The Pogues return for the fifth and final season after JJ's death, the loss of the Blue Crown, and a widening list of enemies. John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, and Cleo are forced into an uneasy alliance with Rafe as they try to reclaim their future. Netflix Tudum confirms the Aug. 20 premiere and final-season status, while RT lists ten episodes and no scores yet.
Verdict: Watch It — for returning fans. This is not the week to start from scratch: the emotional payoff depends on four seasons of treasure hunts, betrayals, and Pogue mythology. If you are already invested, the final-season hook is the weekend event; if not, save it for a proper catch-up binge.
HBO Max: two high-concept launches with no score yet
Normal — Aug. 14
Bob Odenkirk plays a temporary small-town sheriff who investigates a bank robbery and uncovers darker local secrets. The film also stars Henry Winkler and Lena Headey; NOW's film listing gives the 1-hour-27-minute runtime and action genre, while TV Guide's August Max calendar places it on HBO Max on Aug. 14.
Verdict: Watch It. The short runtime, Odenkirk-led premise, and contained crime setup make it a sensible one-sitting choice. Rotten Tomatoes did not expose a verifiable 2026 title page or score in this check, so this is a premise-and-cast recommendation, not a consensus-backed one.
Lanterns Season 1 — Aug. 16
DC's new series pairs veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) with recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) in a murder investigation rooted in the American heartland. Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King are credited as the creative team; TV Guide's preview identifies the Nebraska setting and Aug. 16 HBO debut, and RT lists eight episodes with the same premiere date but no reviews or audience ratings.
Verdict: Watch It — if you want a detective story wearing DC armor. The useful signal here is the shape of the show: a grounded investigation first, superhero mythology second. The unknown is execution; with no RT sample yet, viewers who dislike first-season experimentation may want to wait for early reviews.
Hulu: the best score, the worst score, and a complete nature binge
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 18 — Aug. 18 on Hulu
The Gang is back for ten episodes, with the season's announced targets including workplace automation, conspiracy theories, LARPing, Renaissance faires, and Little League. Hulu's official August guide says the season premieres Aug. 17 on FXX and streams the next day on Hulu. Rotten Tomatoes currently shows 100% from four critic reviews and zero audience ratings.
Verdict: Binge-Worthy — for returning fans. The early reviews are unusually strong, and ten episodes give the show's established rhythm room to build. Treat the 100% as an encouraging early signal, not a final grade: four reviews is a small sample and the audience score has not started.
The Shards Season 1 — new episode Aug. 20 on Hulu
Ryan Murphy's adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's novel follows Bret, an aspiring writer at an elite 1980s Los Angeles prep school, whose privileged social circle destabilizes after mysterious new student Robert Mallory arrives amid a serial killer's reign. Hulu's official schedule lists a new episode on Aug. 20; its schedule differs from RT's episode listing, which lists the episode for Aug. 19. RT's season page reports 53% from 51 critics, 36% from 50+ audience ratings, and a consensus calling the series stylish but only mildly entertaining.
Verdict: Skip It. The premise has the right ingredients for a pulpy late-night thriller, but both critic and audience scores are weak enough that the show's strongest asset appears to be its surface style. If you are already watching, the new episode is part of the weekly schedule; for everyone else, this is the cleanest pass of the week.
LION — Aug. 20
This four-episode limited nature series follows Kio, a lion cub filmed over four years as he grows from a vulnerable young animal into a potential king. Jon Favreau and Michael Gunton executive-produce, with Hans Zimmer credited for original music. Disney and Hulu's official August schedule lists all episodes streaming on Aug. 20; RT lists four episodes, but currently has no critic reviews or audience ratings and displays Aug. 19 as the premiere date.
Verdict: Watch It. The complete drop makes this the easiest short binge in the guide, and the cub-to-king arc gives it a clear narrative spine rather than a loose collection of wildlife footage. The recommendation is based on the format, subject, and credited team — not on a Rotten Tomatoes score that does not exist yet.
Apple TV+: one finale worth catching up for
Lucky Season 1, Episode 7: “All Good Things” — Aug. 19
Apple's crime thriller centers on a woman raised in a criminal family who must embrace that past one last time. Anya Taylor-Joy leads a cast that includes Annette Bening, Timothy Olyphant, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor; the series comes from Jonathan Tropper and Cassie Pappas and is based on Marissa Stapley's novel. Apple TV Press lists Episode 7 as the Aug. 19 series finale and describes an explosive confrontation, while RT's season page shows 78% from 64 critics and 69% from 250+ audience ratings.
Verdict: Watch It — if you are already in. This is the week's most useful score-backed TV pick: the season has enough critic and audience data to signal a generally positive reception, and the finale arrives with an actual endpoint. New viewers should start at Episode 1 rather than dropping into the last hour of a crime story built on accumulated betrayals.
Bottom line
- Best low-commitment movie: Don't Say Good Luck — 93 minutes and a 100% early Tomatometer.
- Best event release: Outer Banks Season 5 — the Pogues' final Netflix ride on Aug. 20.
- Best complete binge: LION — four episodes on Hulu in one drop.
- Best score-backed returning comedy: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 18 — but remember that only four critics have filed reviews.
- Clear skip: The Shards — the 53% critic score and 36% audience score point in the same direction.
