A rare Australian orchid got its chance in the wild — after three years in the lab

The rosella spider orchid is native to parts of New South Wales and Victoria. Researchers know only four places where it grows. In 2000, they recorded 120 plants in the wild; by 2023, that number had risen fivefold. The orchid also has an unusually narrow set of partners. Its purple flower appears between August and September and produces a musky scent aimed at one native bee, Leioproctus platycephalus. Three years before the walk into the bush

Alex McLachlan, a research scientist at the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, told ABC News that the gardens' orchid conservation team has about 500 species in propagation. The team also planned to return eight threatened species, including non-orchids, to the wild during the year. For the rosella spider orchid, McLachlan and his colleagues raised seeds with fungal spores in petri dishes, moved seedlings into flasks, and then waited another year or two for sturdy plants. 2
That timetable explains the mood of the planting day. In July, volunteers and scientists carried more than 500 nursery-grown orchids to a protected site where the required native bee was already known to live.
