The Potato Aisle Rolls Softly

A bedtime-soft walk through the produce aisle, with white potatoes as the quiet lead. The track follows the latest available BLS monthly baseline from June to July 2026, then places it beside USDA advertised prices reported on August 28, 2026.

The BLS U.S. city-average price for white potatoes was $0.923 per pound in June and $0.942 in July, a two-cent rise. The BLS series is not seasonally adjusted, and the values are averages rather than a promise from one store. 1

The July 2026 BLS CPI release gives the wider produce-room context: food at home fell 0.1% month over month; potatoes rose 3.4% over the year, apples rose 11.1%, and tomatoes rose 12.8%. These are CPI index changes, not the same thing as the per-pound average-price series. 23

USDA AMS's Weekly Grocery Store Specialty Crops Feature Activity report, issued Friday, August 28, 2026, covers advertised prices from August 22 through September 3. National conventional ads showed Russet potatoes in a 5 lb bag at $3.37, compared with $2.33 in the comparable week last year; round red potatoes were $0.99 per pound, compared with $1.16 last year; and yellow potatoes in a 5 lb bag were $2.85, compared with $3.26 last year. Those are weighted advertised-feature prices, not shelf averages. 4

The same USDA report listed Gala or Royal Gala apples at $1.80 per pound versus $1.52 in the comparable week last year, and Roma tomatoes at $1.32 per pound versus $1.09. The aisle is mixed: one sign climbs while another eases. 4
