Fils and Gauff win Cincinnati as the US Open week begins

The Cincinnati 1000s finished with two different kinds of return. Arthur Fils won his first ATP Masters 1000 title, while Coco Gauff won Cincinnati for the second time. Both finals were completed on Sunday, Aug. 23.

The men's draw turned on one top-seed exit and a run of American quarterfinals. Tommy Paul saved a match point in the second-set tiebreak and beat top seed Alexander Zverev 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-4. Paul reached his first Cincinnati quarterfinal. 6

Frances Tiafoe beat Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(2), 7-5 to reach his third Masters 1000 semifinal. Tiafoe and Nakashima then made the first all-American Cincinnati semifinal since 2010. 8

Arthur Fils reached the other semifinal by beating Thiago Agustin Tirante 6-3, 6-2. Fils had already made two Masters 1000 semifinals in 2026; Cincinnati was his first at the event. 9

Fils beat Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinal to reach his first Masters 1000 final. The result also put Cobolli on course for a career-high No. 6 in the PIF ATP Rankings. 10

Tiafoe beat Nakashima 7-5, 6-3 in the other semifinal. Tiafoe returned to the Cincinnati final for the second time in three years, while Nakashima left the North American hard-court swing with a 12-3 record. 11

The final belonged to Fils after the first set. He beat Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 to win his first Masters 1000 title and his fifth ATP Tour trophy. Fils became the first French Masters 1000 champion since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2014. Coco Gauff beat Bejlek 6-4, 6-1 in the second semifinal. Gauff won eight of the last nine games and reached her third WTA 1000 final of 2026. The result set up Cincinnati's first all-American women's final since 1970. 14

Gauff never trailed against Pegula in the final. She opened a 5-0 lead, finished the 1-hour-14-minute match 6-2, 6-4, and joined Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka as a two-time Cincinnati champion. 2
