Rain moved the finish line: Washington's finals wait as Canada's 1000s begin
The July 27-August 3 window ended with Washington's singles finals unfinished by rain, while Arthur Géa, Kristina Liutova and Alexandra Eala led the hard-court transition into the Canadian 1000s.
The week ended mid-match
Washington supplied the week’s sharpest image: both singles finals were interrupted by rain. Jessica Pegula had taken the first set 6-4 from Alexandra Eala before Eala moved 2-1 ahead in the second; the men’s final between Taylor Fritz and Rafael Jodar had not started by Monday’s cutoff. The first North American hard-court week still produced three clean breakthroughs — Arthur Géa’s first ATP title in Los Cabos, Kristina Liutova’s first WTA title in Memphis, and Eala’s first WTA 500 final — while the Canadian 1000s opened under the same weather problem. 1
Coverage: July 27-August 3, 2026, through Monday’s 10:00 publication cutoff.

Washington: two finals, neither finished
The women’s draw gave Eala the week’s most consequential run. The 21-year-old Filipina beat Zheng Qinwen 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, then Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 7-6(1), Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-4 and Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-2. The Osaka win took 76 minutes and put Eala into her first WTA 500 final. 7
Pegula’s route was shorter because she received a bye: Magdalena Frech pushed her through three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, before Pegula beat Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 7-5 and Diana Shnaider 7-5, 6-4. That set up a final between the world No. 3 and a player who had already removed three seeds and a Grand Slam champion. 8
Rain then changed the result from a Sunday story to a Monday appointment. Pegula won the opening set 6-4; Eala led 2-1 in the second when play stopped. The doubles final was completed: Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool beat Austin Krajicek and Nikola Mektić 6-3, 6-4. The singles winner, and therefore the final ranking order, was still unknown at the cutoff. 1
The men’s semifinal scores were cleaner. Fritz beat Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Jodar, the 19-year-old Spaniard, recovered from a tiebreak loss to beat Alejandro Tabilo 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-4 and reach his first ATP 500 final. 9
That final was postponed by rain rather than played badly: there was simply no match to report yet. Fritz entered as the third seed; Jodar arrived with a chance to turn a breakout week into a title and a much larger ranking jump. The restraint matters here. A later result belongs in next week’s issue, not this one.
Los Cabos: Géa takes the title Shapovalov was defending
Arthur Géa beat defending champion Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-4 in the Los Cabos final for his first ATP Tour title. The 21-year-old Frenchman became the youngest champion in the event’s history, and the win moved him from No. 127 to a projected career-high No. 81. Shapovalov’s bid for a second straight title ended without a deciding set. 10
The points explain why the result matters beyond a good week: Los Cabos awarded 250 points to the champion and 165 to the finalist. Géa took the full 250; Shapovalov took 165. 11
Memphis: Liutova wins the event she had to qualify for
Kristina Liutova came through qualifying and then won the inaugural Memphis Classic, beating Darja Vidmanova 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the final. At 16, Liutova became the youngest WTA singles champion since Coco Gauff. The score tells the shape of the match: Vidmanova took control early, Liutova changed the pressure in the second set, and the deciding set never returned to the Czech’s side. 1213
For the ranking file, this is the kind of result worth carrying forward: a qualifier winning a 250-level title creates a larger ranking shift than a routine seed win, but the accessible WTA page did not expose a finalized Monday rank table at the publication cutoff.
Canada starts with rain, wild cards and one familiar name out
Toronto’s opening day produced seven completed first-round matches before rain cancelled the night session. The headline result was Kamilla Rakhimova’s 6-4, 6-1 win over 46-year-old Venus Williams. Rakhimova won nine of the last 11 games after Williams had chances to lead 5-3 in the first set. 14
Katherine Sebov supplied the home-court breakthrough, beating qualifier Aoi Ito 6-3, 6-4 to become the first Canadian woman to win a singles match in the 2026 Toronto main draw. The other completed results were:
- Jessica Bouzas Maneiro def. Ariana Arseneault, 6-2, 6-4.
- Moyuka Uchijima def. Cristina Bucșa, 6-3, 6-4; the win set up a second-round meeting with top seed Aryna Sabalenka.
- Viktorija Golubic def. Kimberly Birrell, 7-6(7), 6-4.
- Camila Osorio def. Lucrezia Stefanini, 7-6(4), 6-3.
- Sara Bejlek def. Xiyu Wang, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
The draw is a 96-player WTA 1000, with 32 seeds receiving byes. The defending champion, Victoria Mboko, is absent with a left-knee MCL injury that is expected to keep her out through the US Open; Karolina Muchova is also out after a small procedure. 5
Montreal had even less court time. Jaume Munar beat Rinky Hijikata 7-6(3), 6-3, and Juncheng Shang beat Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 6-3, 6-3 before rain cancelled the rest of Sunday’s schedule. Monday’s order was packed with 27 first-round matches, including Gabriel Diallo, Jack Draper, Matteo Berrettini, Gaël Monfils, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Marin Čilić. 1516
Ranking watch: useful projections, no fake Monday table
The ranking picture is unusually easy to overstate because Washington’s singles finals were unfinished at the exact cutoff and the Canadian 1000s had barely begun.
| Player | Last confirmed rank in the reporting | Current projection or locked result | Points tied to the week |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jessica Pegula | No. 3 | Remains No. 3 before the Washington final | 325 locked; 500 if champion |
| Alexandra Eala | No. 28 | At least No. 25 projected after the Washington run | 325 locked; 500 if champion |
| Rafael Jodar | Live projection after reaching the final | No. 15 if runner-up; No. 12 if champion | ATP 500 finalist or champion points pending |
| Arthur Géa | No. 127 | Projected No. 81 after winning Los Cabos | 250 |
Pegula and Eala’s ranking positions and event-point scenarios come from the WTA’s final preview. Jodar’s projections come from the Washington semifinal reporting, and Géa’s rise comes from the Los Cabos result report. These are not a substitute for a finalized Monday top-30 table; they are the result-linked movements that can be stated without mixing a live ranking snapshot with an official weekly table. 8910
The week ahead
| Event | Dates and place | What to follow |
|---|---|---|
| National Bank Open, ATP Masters 1000 | Through August 13, Montreal; hard court | Whether Monday’s packed schedule can restore the draw after the rainout, and how the home players handle the top half. |
| National Bank Open, WTA 1000 | August 2-13, Toronto; hard court | Toronto’s second-round matchups, especially Uchijima–Sabalenka and the first appearances of the top seeds. |
| Cincinnati Open, ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 | August 8-23, Mason, Ohio; hard court | The next large-field test before the US Open, with Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka, the Wimbledon champions and Rafael Jodar among the names on the announced fields. |
Cincinnati’s official 2026 announcement sets the event for August 8-23 and identifies it as an ATP and WTA 1000 tournament. 17
Washington will have to finish before the Canadian draws can take over the calendar properly. That is the clean handoff to watch: Eala and Jodar have already made their case, but the trophies — and the final ranking consequences — were still waiting on the weather.
