Washington finishes, Canada turns young: Fritz, Eala and the 1000 quarterfinals (2026)

Washington’s rain-delayed finals finally ended, then the Canadian 1000s took over. Taylor Fritz and Alexandra Eala collected titles in Washington, while Montreal produced an all-under-25 men’s quarterfinal field and Toronto lost both Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula before the last eight.

Washington finally gets its finals

The weather owed Washington two titles, and Monday collected both. Fritz beat Jodar 7-6(2), 6-4 in 1 hour 49 minutes for his 11th ATP title. It was his first title above the ATP 250 level in almost four years, and it made him the second American Washington champion since 2008, after Sebastian Korda. 1

Eala’s finish was more dramatic. The WTA final had been suspended with Pegula ahead 6-4, 1-2; Eala returned to win the last nine games and take the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. She became the first WTA Tour singles champion from the Philippines and recorded her seventh win over a Top 10 opponent in 2026. 2

Two other finals that carried into the week were settled in straight sets in Los Cabos, where 20-year-old Arthur Gea won his first ATP Tour title over Shapovalov, and in Memphis, where 16-year-old Liutova won the inaugural WTA event over Vidmanova. 3 4

Montreal: eight quarterfinalists, all 25 or younger

Montreal is a hard-court ATP Masters 1000 at IGA Stadium, running Aug. 2–13. The event carries US$9,415,725 in prize money; the ATP’s event guide does not state a singles draw size. 8

The last 16 produced four cleanly defined quarterfinal matches. Daniel Merida beat Tallon Griekspoor 6-3, 6-1 and Learner Tien beat Thiago Tirante 6-4, 6-4 to create one; Ben Shelton beat Joao Fonseca 6-3, 7-6(3) and Jakub Mensik beat Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 7-5 to create another. The other two were scheduled for Monday: Rafael Jodar vs. Arthur Fils, followed by Luciano Darderi vs. Brandon Nakashima. 5

That makes the age profile the story before the quarterfinals even start: all eight players remaining in the singles draw are 25 or younger. Shelton’s win over Fonseca also carried the week’s only notable injury note in the featured Montreal results: Fonseca rolled or aggravated his right ankle while attempting a smash, but continued without calling for the trainer. 5 9

Toronto: Sabalenka and Pegula out

Toronto is the parallel WTA 1000: a hard-court event in Toronto running Aug. 2–13, with a 96-player singles draw and a total prize fund of $7,433,076. 10

The biggest result was Ekaterina Alexandrova’s 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4 win over World No. 1 Sabalenka. It was Alexandrova’s third victory over a No. 1 and sent her to a sixth WTA 1000 quarterfinal. 6 11

Jessica Pegula also went out, beaten 6-3, 6-3 by Diana Shnaider. Iga Swiatek recovered from a set down to beat Marta Kostyuk 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, while Elina Svitolina beat Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 6-4. 6

The remaining two quarterfinal slots went to Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff. Rybakina beat Liudmila Samsonova 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 after trailing 3-0 in the third set; Gauff beat qualifier Alina Korneeva 6-3, 6-1. Naomi Osaka beat Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-4, and Belinda Bencic moved through Alexandra Eala. 7 12 13

The Toronto quarterfinals are Swiatek–Shnaider, Alexandrova–Svitolina, Rybakina–Osaka, and Gauff–Bencic. Osaka is now into a fourth straight quarterfinal at an event she entered, following Bad Homburg, Wimbledon, and Washington. 6 12 13

Ranking watch

The ATP’s post-Washington update moved Fritz up two places to No. 8 and Jodar up nine to No. 15, a new career high. 14

Eala’s title lifted her eight places to No. 20, her first Top 20 ranking and a career high. Liutova rose 103 places to No. 126 after Memphis, also a career high. The WTA ranking-watch report gives those movements but does not publish weekly points gained or lost, so this section records the verified rank changes rather than inventing a points ledger. 15

The week ahead

Montreal and Toronto both run to Thursday, Aug. 13, when their singles finals are scheduled. Cincinnati then becomes the next combined ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 stop: the hard-court event runs Aug. 13–23 in Mason, Ohio, with the ATP singles final on Aug. 23. 8 10 16

The WTA Cincinnati draw also begins Aug. 13 and ends Aug. 23. It has 96 singles places, and the entry list includes the entire Top 10 and 75 of the Top 77, subject to withdrawals. 17

Canada’s quarterfinals will decide which of the young men in Montreal and which of Toronto’s resurgent or wounded contenders arrive in Cincinnati with momentum. The handoff is immediate: both Canadian finals are due Thursday, and Cincinnati’s main draw starts that same day.
