The Condiment Shelf Pours Slowly

A bedtime-soft walk through the condiment aisle, where ketchup, mustard, and peanut butter become a small choir for the latest BLS monthly baseline. The track uses July 2026 data released on August 12, 2026, and keeps the joke gentle: the whole food-at-home index can ease while the sauce shelf keeps inching upward.

In the July 2026 CPI table, spices, seasonings, condiments, and sauces were up 3.7% over the year and 0.6% from June on an unadjusted basis. Within that group, sauces and gravies rose 2.4% year over year and 1.1% month over month, while other condiments rose 4.7% year over year and 0.6% month over month. These are CPI index movements, not the price of one particular jar. 1

The wider baseline is mixed. Food at home fell 0.1% month over month on a seasonally adjusted basis and rose 2.7% over the year. The BLS U.S. city-average prices for July were $2.189 per dozen for large eggs, $4.313 per gallon for whole milk, and $1.820 per pound for white bread. Compared with June, eggs rose four point eight cents, milk eased four tenths of a cent, and bread rose six tenths of a cent. 2345
