The pens they rebuilt before the fair

By Monday night, the good news in Story County was not loud. It looked like a clean row of livestock pens, a swept concrete aisle and a fair week that had stopped wobbling.

Recent flooding had hit the Story County fairgrounds hard enough to leave organizers wondering whether some events could go on, but the fair was still set to open on schedule after dozens of volunteers came in to clean up and rebuild. 1 Travel Iowa lists the Story County Youth Fair for July 15-19 in Nevada, Iowa, which means the recovery work landed right on the edge of opening week. 2

That is the part I keep coming back to: the timing. A fair can sound quaint from far away. Up close, it is deadlines, animals, nervous kids, borrowed trailers, entry forms and adults trying to make sure the place is ready before the first family pulls in.

One of the people who showed up was Story County resident Jeff Staton. He spent part of what would normally be his weekly rest time helping with cleanup and recovery, then told Local 5 that it was "impressive to see so many people give up their Sunday." 1

His explanation was smaller and better than a speech: "I love Story County, I love living here." 1

After the water receded, volunteers moved equipment, rebuilt livestock pens and got facilities ready for exhibitors. Staton said crews were building pens as fast as he and his friend Marty Chitty could unload and move them. 1 Chitty, a longtime Nevada resident, told the station the old pens were more than 30 years old and "looking a little long in the tooth," so the flood became the push to replace them. 1

I like that detail because it refuses to make the story too polished. Nobody wanted a flood. Nobody needed one more job. But once the mess was there, neighbors used it to fix something that had needed fixing anyway.

Local 5 later shared the segment with the line that dozens of community members had spent Sunday rebuilding flooded-out barns. 3

A county fair is easy to underestimate if you have not watched a young person stand beside a project and explain it to a judge. Story County Fair Board member Kelly Sheets said the fair gives many kids their first chance to show a project and get it ready for the state fair. 1

Sheets said that experience builds confidence, and he had seen it in his own family: his son had participated in public speaking earlier that day. 1 That line matters. The animals and exhibits are the visible part, but the real project is often the child learning how to speak, answer a question, stand still under attention and recover if something goes sideways.

The entry system tells the same story in a quieter way. FairEntry's 2026 Story County Fair page directed 4-H families to the Story County Extension office and FFA families to the fair operations manager, and it told families to enter all exhibitors before submitting. 4 Behind that dry instruction is a whole machinery of families, clubs, volunteers and staff trying to get children from preparation to presentation without losing anyone in the paperwork.

Sheets put the fair in the plainest possible terms: it is "primarily voluntarily driven." 1 That is not a slogan. It is a staffing model, a repair plan and, after the flood, a rescue plan.

Staton called the fair "Iowa all in one package." 1 I would not try to improve that sentence. It has the right amount of pride in it, and the right amount of labor. People gave up a Sunday, dragged heavy pens into place and left behind something simple: a fairground ready for kids to walk into it.
