Canada crowns Shelton and Swiatek before Cincinnati bites back

The Canadian swing ended with two major champions, but Cincinnati immediately changed the mood. Ben Shelton defended Montreal before falling in his opening match in Ohio; Novak Djokovic also went out, while Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff and several rising ATP names moved into the next phase.

Shelton's title defense was as clean as the draw could offer: six wins, no dropped sets, and a 6-3, 7-6(4) final against Nakashima. The victory made him the fourth man this century to defend the Canadian title, after Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. It also moved Shelton's head-to-head record against Nakashima to 6-0. 1

Nakashima still left with the bigger ranking breakthrough. The run was his first Masters 1000 final and lifted him nine places to a career-high No. 22. Shelton climbed four places to No. 6, one spot below his career high, after taking his fourth and biggest title of the season. 5

The closing bracket was unusually young and American-heavy: Shelton, Tien, Jodar and Nakashima made the semifinals. Nakashima ended Jodar's breakthrough run, while Shelton beat Tien to set up the all-American final. 5

The Canadian event ran from August 2-13 at Montreal's IGA Stadium on hard courts. Its draw is finished; the lasting question is whether Shelton's short rest mattered when Cincinnati began only days later. 6

Swiatek beat Rybakina 6-2, 6-3 in 75 minutes to win her first title of 2026 and the 26th of her career. The trophy was her 12th WTA 1000 title, moving her past Sabalenka's 11 and behind only Serena Williams' 13. The win also put Swiatek ahead 7-6 in the pair's head-to-head after two straight losses to Rybakina. 2

The ranking effect was immediate. Swiatek returned to No. 5; the WTA's ranking-watch report records a five-place weekly rise. Rybakina, meanwhile, cut Sabalenka's lead to 54 points and received another chance to challenge for No. 1 in Cincinnati. 7

The draw's late stages showed why the final was so lopsided. Swiatek beat Diana Shnaider 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and then avenged two earlier losses to Elina Svitolina in the semifinals. Rybakina reached the final after three-set wins over Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff in her last two matches. 2

That correction matters because ranking stories often mix the live Race with the weekly singles ranking. The clean takeaway is simpler: Toronto restored Swiatek to the Top 5, while Rybakina made the No. 1 race tighter. Toronto's 96-player WTA 1000 draw was completed on August 13 before the tour moved directly to Cincinnati. 8

Cincinnati is an ATP Masters 1000 on outdoor hard courts at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, running August 13-23. The event carries 1,000 ranking points and a total purse of $9,415,725. By the cutoff, the first two rounds had supplied enough upsets to make the third-round bracket more interesting than the seed list suggested. 9

Faria, a Portuguese qualifier ranked No. 79, beat Shelton 6-4, 6-4 in the second round for the first Top 10 win of his career. Shelton had won Montreal four days earlier and had not dropped a set in Canada; Faria also ended his six-match winning streak. Faria trailed 1-4 in the second set before winning five straight games. 3

Djokovic's second-round loss carried a different warning. Tirante beat the World No. 5 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 44 minutes. The ATP report described Djokovic as physically struggling in the heat and humidity; he called for the physio during an 18-minute game and underwent a tournament-doctor assessment at the changeover. No diagnosis was given in the report, so the result is the fact, not a claim about a new injury. 10

Rafael Jodar saved match point, came back from 1-5 in the deciding set and beat Denis Shapovalov 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 in the second round. The victory extended a breakout North American swing that already included a Washington final and a Montreal semifinal. 11

Alexander Zverev recovered from a set down to beat Cameron Norrie 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in his second-round opener, a match that finished after midnight. Felix Auger-Aliassime, returning after 40 days and after withdrawing from Montreal with a back injury, beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-5 in the second round. One more injury-related result belongs in the margin: Casper Ruud retired while trailing qualifier Christopher O'Connell 7-5, 1-2. That leaves the next rounds with both a major name removed and an open path for O'Connell. 13

The WTA event has a 96-player singles draw, with 32 seeds receiving byes into the second round. The second round was scheduled for August 15-16, the third round for August 17-18, and the final for August 23. The total purse is $7,433,076, with 1,000 ranking points available. 4

Swiatek opened her title defense in the second round by beating Emiliana Arango 6-3, 6-0. She fell behind a break at 2-1, then won the last seven games; the result was her seventh straight match win and seventh consecutive victory at the tournament. Her next opponent is Maria Sakkari. 14

Sabalenka beat Talia Gibson 6-2, 7-6(2) in the second round, hitting 13 aces in hot, gusty conditions. She led 6-5 in the second set but missed five match points in the following game before closing the tiebreak. She next faces Wang Xinyu. 15

Gauff had the most demanding second-round comeback among the leading seeds. After losing the first set 2-6, she beat Liudmila Samsonova 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in 2 hours 6 minutes, then drew fellow American Ann Li in the third round. Gauff is now 5-0 against Samsonova and has 10 comeback wins this season. 16

The field also began with a thinner bench. The official tournament guide listed 2025 finalist Jasmine Paolini, Wimbledon finalist Karolina Muchova, Hailey Baptiste and Victoria Mboko among the notable absences, and listed Muchova, Paolini and Jaqueline Cristian as withdrawals. The guide attributed the absences to ongoing injuries or recovery, without providing a new medical diagnosis for each player. 4

Cincinnati is the immediate story. The ATP and WTA draws continue through August 23, with the ATP final scheduled for August 23 and the WTA final not before 7 p.m. local time that evening. The next seven days are therefore about the third round, quarterfinals and semifinals rather than a new 1000 event. 49

The next Grand Slam comes after that transition: the WTA's official hard-court calendar places the US Open in the August 31-September 12 block, with the singles final on September 12 in New York.
