Chinese VPN Tracker: what changed July 13–20, 2026

A dated roundup of Chinese VPN provider signals, community reports, LetsVPN uncertainty, and the policy context behind this week’s status claims.

The short version

The clearest signal this week is not a new nationwide block or a dependable "best airport" list. It is the continued instability of provider status reports. A July 14 thread in r/chinatravel asked whether LetsVPN still worked in China and drew 79 comments at retrieval, with travelers offering different answers and very little shared test data. 1
For now, treat provider names as leads to test on your own device, network, and travel dates. The public evidence below supports a shortlist of questions, not a universal uptime claim.

This week's provider signals

The useful reports are specific, but still anecdotal

Two replies in the same thread are more useful than a generic "works in China" claim because they include at least some timing or usage context:
Provider signalWhat was actually reportedWhat it does not prove
ShadowflyReddit user Kaio0911, whose background is not public, wrote on July 18 that they had returned from China four days earlier. They said Shadowfly worked generally, with one temporary connection loss, and cost ¥15 for one month. 2It is one user's experience, not a multi-city or multi-ISP test.
ObscuraReddit user Leuchtmarker, whose background is not public, posted a one-line recommendation for iOS on July 17. 3There is no stated location, duration, protocol, or performance result.
LetsVPNThe thread author, Reddit user CashImportant7765, asked whether LetsVPN had recovered and requested alternatives after hearing it had stopped working. The author's background is not public. 1A question is not confirmation that the service remains offline.
The pattern matters more than the names: a provider recommendation without date, city, carrier, device, and failure details is difficult to carry from one traveler to the next.

LetsVPN is still a live risk marker, not a resolved status

A May 3 report from OxeraVPN said LetsVPN users across mainland China were seeing connection failures across listed servers, while the apps still opened. It also described reported problems with payment, renewal, and support. 4
That report is useful as an outage lead, but its limits are material. OxeraVPN is a competing provider, the article relies partly on user reports and the publisher's own support inbox, and it says the cause was unknown. It should not be read as an official LetsVPN statement or as proof that the service's May condition was unchanged in July.

Policy context

The regulatory baseline is older than this week's reports. A 2017 Ministry of Industry and Information Technology notice, summarized in a contemporaneous China National Radio Q&A, said that companies or individuals without approval could not build or rent dedicated lines, including VPN channels, to conduct cross-border telecommunications business. The same Q&A said the notice did not affect office users who needed cross-border access for work through approved telecommunications services. 5
A more recent local-government article, published by the Suixi County Data Resources Bureau on July 6, said the county's e-government network would strictly limit non-government VPN use and use a monitoring platform to detect unauthorized external connections. 6 This is a public-sector network administration measure from one county. It is not evidence of a new nationwide consumer VPN prohibition, and it should not be reported as one.
For provider tracking, the practical takeaway is that legal and network exposure are separate questions. A service can be technically reachable and still carry payment, support, or operating-structure risks that a speed test will not show.

How to read recommendation pages

Freshness is easy to misread. Comparitech's China VPN page says it tested 59 services, but the page is marked updated January 12, 2026 and carries a reader-funding and commission disclosure. It currently recommends NordVPN, which makes the page a commercial comparison source rather than a July field test. 7
When a new recommendation appears, the minimum useful record is:
  • the date and city of the test;
  • the mobile carrier or fixed-line ISP;
  • the device and app version;
  • whether the claim covers browsing, video, messaging, or only a successful handshake;
  • what happened to payment, renewal, and customer support;
  • whether the author is an independent user, a provider, or an affiliate publisher.
Without those fields, "works in China" is a label with too much missing context to guide a purchase.

Tracker status for July 13–20

  • Community reports: active, but inconsistent and low confidence.
  • LetsVPN: outage lead from May remains unresolved in the public sources reviewed; no July recovery statement was verified here.
  • Policy: ongoing administrative controls are visible on at least one government network; no new nationwide consumer rule is established by the sources above.
  • New launches: no provider release with enough dated, independent detail was included this week.
The next useful update is not another generic ranking. It is a dated status report that names the provider, location, network, device, and what failed.
