Thirty platforms, forty-six households

Schoonschip is a residential neighborhood on the Johan van Hasselt Canal in northern Amsterdam. Its unusual arithmetic is the first thing to notice: 46 households live on 30 floating arks. Fifteen of those arks hold two households each in a semidetached arrangement, and one ark contains a shared meeting space. 1
The homes are not identical houseboats. The residents designed each one with an architect of their choice, within the rules of the project. Space&Matter, which helped plan the neighborhood, says the finished scheme has 30 water plots and 46 individual homes. 2

The street is a smart jetty

On land, electricity, water and waste pipes usually disappear under a street. At Schoonschip, the shared jetty is part of the visible neighborhood: it connects the homes while also carrying technical infrastructure. The layout gives each home its own character but keeps the community physically linked. 2
The energy system is shared as well. The project describes solar panels, batteries and a smart grid that lets residents exchange electricity. All 46 households have only one connection to the national electricity grid. Heat pumps draw warmth from the canal, and the homes are not connected to the gas network. 1

Even the wastewater is split

Schoonschip separates grey water, such as shower and washing-machine water, from black water from toilets. The residents' description also sets out a pilot plan for sending black water to a floating digester, where it could be turned into energy while phosphate is recovered. The wording matters: this is presented as a planned pilot, not as a claim that every part of the system is already operating at full scale. 1
ArchDaily describes the neighborhood as using decentralized systems for energy, water and waste, and notes that the homes were manufactured off-site before being placed on their plots. The floating structures rise and fall with the water, while the jetty stays the everyday route between home, neighbor and shore. 3
