The new item that clears the daily threshold is a Frontiers in Public Health perspective published on 5 August: four high-risk contacts managed in Lombardy after the M/V Hondius Andes virus event all tested negative, while targeted quarantine, active monitoring, and referral pathways kept the response proportionate. 1
Chile's latest readable case snapshot still points to severity and care capacity rather than a proven new transmission chain. Los Lagos has 9 confirmed cases and 6 deaths, a 66.6% case-fatality ratio in the reported regional denominator; the national balance remains 46 infections and 18 deaths, or 39%. The Ministry of Health's alert covers 13 of 16 regions and is described as a response to increased mortality and system capacity needs, not as evidence that Chile has entered an epidemic. 234
The two severe Coyhaique patients were evacuated by air with ECMO equipment after a long delay, but the latest readable report still described them as suspected cases awaiting Instituto de Salud Pública confirmation. They should not be added to the 46-case national denominator without a newer laboratory result and a check against the reporting snapshot. 5

WHO's latest event page still lists 2 July's DON611 as the final M/V Hondius update: 13 cases, 12 confirmed and 1 probable, 3 deaths, completed contact follow-up, and no further related transmission expected. Chile: the denominator holds, the severity signal does not
The most useful distinction today is between how many infections have been counted and how hard the counted cases have been to treat.

Los Lagos is therefore better described as a severity cluster than a transmission cluster. Nine cases across eight communes and different rural or outdoor exposure settings are compatible with repeated rodent-environment exposure in an endemic region. The reports do not identify a shared site, a common rodent source, or a human-to-human chain. The 66.6% figure is a case-fatality ratio within the reported confirmed-case denominator, not an infection-fatality estimate for everyone exposed in the region. 23
The care signal is unusually specific. A reported 77% ECMO requirement does not measure transmission, but it shows where a surveillance signal becomes an operational problem: recognizing deterioration, moving patients out of a region when necessary, and keeping access to advanced respiratory support available. The Aysén evacuation illustrates the same problem at the individual level. Moving the patients solved an immediate referral bottleneck; it did not resolve their diagnostic classification or establish that they belonged to the national count. 25
The reservoir signal is also unchanged. Chilean reporting identifies the long-tailed pygmy rice rat as the main reservoir associated with the country's endemic Andes-virus risk and places the reported cases in rural or semi-rural exposure contexts. No new rodent abundance, environmental sampling, or reservoir-genomic result was verified in this cutoff pass, so the 2026 mortality signal should not be assigned to a newly demonstrated ecological driver. 4

This distinction matters because an unchanged official alert surface can mean either that the situation is stable or that a reporting system has not issued a new bulletin. The evidence supports the narrower statement: no new escalation was verified in the sources checked by the cutoff.
Paper digest: what Italy's new contact-tracing report adds
The new paper is a Perspective, not a surveillance report and not a clinical trial: Rapid response and surveillance for high-risk contacts during May 2026 Andes hantavirus outbreak: a Northern Italy experience, published in Frontiers in Public Health on 5 August 2026. The authors are Sara Laura Ferrari, Stefano Odelli, Marta Colaneri and colleagues from the Lombardy regional health system, Luigi Sacco University Hospital, the University of Milan, the University of Pavia, and partner laboratories. 9
Study design and population
The paper reconstructs the response to a contact-tracing chain in Lombardy. The chain involved 4 people: 2 direct flight-related contacts of confirmed ANDV cases and 2 accompanying close contacts. The initial exposure included a 4-hour-45-minute flight from Saint Helena to Johannesburg and a second flight from Johannesburg to Amsterdam; the report describes the exposure information as incomplete in one branch of the investigation. 1
The response used referral to Luigi Sacco University Hospital, precautionary infection-prevention measures, clinical assessment, RT-PCR testing, and metagenomic testing. Direct flight-related contacts were placed under quarantine and active monitoring for 42 days. Accompanying contacts without direct exposure did not receive the same restrictions. 1
Results
All 4 individuals tested negative for ANDV by RT-PCR. Metagenomic testing also found no ANDV; rhinovirus was detected in the first evaluated contact. One symptomatic contact reported gastrointestinal symptoms, cough, and rhinorrhea 10 days after the potential flight exposure, but repeat testing remained negative. 1
The paper's quantitative result is therefore simple: 4 of 4 monitored people were ANDV-negative. It does not estimate the probability of transmission on a flight, the sensitivity of a test at a particular day of illness, or the risk to the wider population. Those quantities were not reported as study outcomes. 1
What it changes for the monitor
The paper gives a useful operational template for a rare but severe imported infection:
- Identify the exposure category before applying restrictions.
- Link high-risk contacts to a referral center and a laboratory pathway.
- Keep active follow-up long enough to cover the relevant incubation concern.
- Avoid turning targeted precaution into a population-wide warning when the evidence supports only close-contact risk.
- Keep public messaging coordinated so that isolation of selected contacts is not mistaken for community transmission.
That is consistent with WHO's broader account of the Hondius response, which included isolation, medical evacuation, laboratory testing, repatriation, international contact tracing, and quarantine. The new paper adds local operational detail from Italy; it does not reopen the closed outbreak or add a new case. 16
Evidence strength and limitation
This is a single regional experience with a very small contact group and no comparison group. It is useful for preparedness design, governance, laboratory routing, and proportionality decisions. It cannot establish that the same quarantine duration, test sequence, or referral model will perform identically in every setting. The authors also note incomplete cross-border information and the time lost between exposure and notification. 1

The ship-linked outbreak remains contained. The next meaningful change would be a verified laboratory update in Aysén, a revised Chilean epidemiological bulletin, or a new official signal outside the existing source boundaries.
