The Full Time Report — Episode 98: Europe goes late, Villa face PSG, and the window gets serious
Tuesday brought the first proper European drama of the week, a Super Cup with Aston Villa facing Paris Saint-Germain, and a transfer market that is starting to turn summer planning into actual squad decisions.
The quick read
- Europe: Bodø/Glimt beat Union Saint-Gilloise 3–2 after extra time to go through 6–5 on aggregate. NEC Nijmegen also needed extra time to beat Olympiacos 2–1, while Lyon beat Sparta Prague 3–0 and won 4–2 overall. 123
- Super Cup: Aston Villa meet Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain in Salzburg. Unai Emery says Villa want more after winning the Europa League, but Amadou Onana and Johan Manzambi are unavailable, while Ezri Konsa, Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martínez are still resting after the World Cup. 4
- Premier League deals: Nottingham Forest have signed Ousmane Diomande from Sporting for a reported £34m on a four-year contract with an option for another year. Everton and Crystal Palace have completed the Brennan Johnson–Dwight McNeil swap, with both players tied down until 2030. 56
- The availability board: Chelsea are exploring a loan for Mykhailo Mudryk as he rebuilds fitness after 20 months out; James Maddison says he has had no recurrence of his previous injury; Rangers striker Youssef Chermiti faces a significant absence with ACL damage. 789
Europe supplies the chaos
There was no Premier League fixture list to work through on Tuesday, so the competitive football came from Champions League qualifying. The big one was in Norway, where Bodø/Glimt beat Union Saint-Gilloise 3–2 after extra time and survived a tie that finished 6–5 on aggregate. It is exactly the sort of qualifier that makes the third round feel like a proper European campaign rather than a warm-up.
NEC Nijmegen produced another extra-time result, beating Olympiacos 2–1 and taking the tie by the same score overall. Lyon were more comfortable, beating Sparta Prague 3–0 to turn a 1–2 first-leg deficit into a 4–2 aggregate win. Elsewhere, Levski Sofia, Sabah, Dinamo Zagreb, Hapoel Be'er Sheva, Celje, Slovan Bratislava and Fenerbahçe all progressed from Tuesday's second legs. 10
The Europa League had one result on the Tuesday list: Iberia 1999 beat Larne 2–1 after extra time and went through by the same aggregate score. That is not a headline with a Premier League club attached to it, but it matters to the shape of the competition. The qualifiers are already producing games decided by the last half-hour, the last kick, or another thirty minutes nobody planned for. 11
Villa walk into the spotlight
Tonight's UEFA Super Cup gives Aston Villa a very different sort of test. They are not defending a league position or trying to qualify for Europe. They are measuring the new version of the club against the side that won the Champions League.
Villa earned the invitation by beating Freiburg 3–0 in May's Europa League final, their first major trophy since the 1996 League Cup. Emery called that a platform rather than a finish. His message was simple: the players have followed the standards, but “we want more”.
The complication is the team sheet. Onana and Manzambi are unavailable. Konsa, Watkins and Martínez are also missing while they recover from the late finish to the World Cup. Villa have already lost Youri Tielemans to Manchester United and Morgan Rogers to Chelsea, while Jadon Sancho and Douglas Luiz have also departed. So the Super Cup is both an occasion and a useful stress test: how much of Villa's structure survives when the summer has taken away several of its familiar pieces?
Emery said Paris are in a similar position and that both teams will start with the players available. That lowers the value of treating the match as a final verdict on either club. It raises the value of watching how Villa defend transitions, how they replace the missing midfield control, and whether the new squad can look like Emery's team under a very bright light. 4
Forest make a statement
Nottingham Forest have completed one of the day's clearest Premier League moves, signing Ousmane Diomande from Sporting. BBC Sport reports a fee of about £34m, a four-year deal and an option for a further year; Reuters puts the deal at about €40m. Diomande arrives with 132 Sporting appearances, consecutive Portuguese league titles and Champions League quarter-final experience.
The fit is fairly obvious. Oliver Glasner favours a back three, and Diomande is a powerful, mobile centre-back who has played in a winning side. Forest finished sixteenth last season and are trying to make the new manager's first rebuild less theoretical. This is not just a big name arriving. It is a signing shaped around the system the manager is expected to use. 512
Everton and Palace have also finished their unusual bit of business. Brennan Johnson has signed a four-year contract at Everton, while Dwight McNeil moves to Palace on a deal through 2030. Johnson made 26 appearances for Palace after arriving in January but did not score; McNeil leaves Everton with 15 goals and 19 assists in 128 appearances.
For Everton, Johnson brings pace, Premier League experience and a player who says the club's direction feels like a good match. For Palace, McNeil is a known Premier League quantity joining a club that has collected the FA Cup, Community Shield and Europa Conference League over the last two seasons. It is less a straight swap of like-for-like form than two clubs changing the shape of problems they already had. 6
Fulham have also completed a move for Southampton midfielder Shea Charles. He has signed for five years with an option for another, and the move makes the Manchester City academy graduate the most expensive Northern Irish footballer. Charles described it as a chance to kickstart his Premier League career. The fee was not disclosed in the BBC report, so there is no sensible number to attach to it. 13
The status column matters
Chelsea's Mykhailo Mudryk is a good example of why the word “move” needs a temperature beside it. Chelsea are exploring a loan, not announcing a completed transfer. Mudryk has not played a competitive match since November 2024 and is trying to rebuild his fitness after the doping case that kept him out. A loan to Strasbourg has been proposed, but he would prefer another English top-flight club. The target is clear; the destination is not.
The same applies to fitness news. James Maddison says he feels good after another session and has had no recurrence of his previous injuries. That is encouraging, but it is not the same as being declared ready for a full competitive match. Tottenham have protected him through pre-season after his ACL injury, with the league opener at Brentford still ahead.
Rangers have the opposite kind of update. Youssef Chermiti has suffered ACL damage and the club says he will be out for a significant period. The injury came shortly after Rangers rejected an offer reported at about £22m, and it leaves Derek McInnes needing to find goals for the Europa League tie with Jagiellonia Białystok without a striker who had started the previous two matches. 7914
And in Spain, Barcelona winger Roony Bardghji has ruptured the ACL in his right knee and is due to undergo surgery. It is a significant setback after an earlier serious knee problem had already interrupted his progress. 15
A new voice at Newcastle
Newcastle's new head coach Matthias Jaissle used his first major press conference to set out an identity rather than a league target. He described the team he wants as front-footed, intense, aggressive and successful. He also said the club know which positions need strengthening, while refusing to turn the press conference into a shopping list.
There is a transitional feel to the job. Bruno Guimarães has left, no new captain has been chosen, and several important players have gone. Jaissle's answer was to focus on the work the current group can control rather than complain about the situation. That is a sensible opening line, but the test will come quickly: Newcastle's first Premier League game is against Liverpool on 23 August. 16
The common thread through Tuesday is certainty. Diomande is signed. Johnson and McNeil are signed. Mudryk is being lined up for a loan. Chermiti's absence is confirmed, while Maddison's return is still a process. Europe has supplied results; the Super Cup supplies the first grand stage; the window is supplying a lot of language that sounds final before it actually is.
That distinction is the useful bit to carry into the evening. A headline tells you what might happen. The status tells you what has actually changed.
