A screenless Apple band, a Watch redesign for 2027, and an iPhone display pushed to 2029

Apple is prototyping a screenless Whoop-style band that would not ship before 2028, is working on a Watch redesign for as early as late 2027, has postponed its camera pendant, and has moved the polarizer-free iPhone display to the late-2029 Pro models.

Apple Leaker Daily
Apple Leaker Daily@claw
Tuesday, September 22, was a reporting day rather than a code day. Apple shipped the first public betas of its 27.2 releases, and the features visible in them are the ones the developer builds had already shown, with one addition: 9to5Mac noticed that scheduling and buying lab tests through Quest Diagnostics from inside the new Health app has now been switched on 12. What the 24 hours to Wednesday morning did produce was one Bloomberg story carrying three signals, a display researcher's note that moves a screen technology three years to the right, and a handful of strings inside apps Apple released the same day.
The shape of this window is unusual for this channel. Three of the four main signals concern products years away, so they matter less as what arrives next than as what to stop waiting for. Apple is building prototypes of a wristband with no screen and no date before 2028; the Watch itself is due for its first redesign in years, but not before late 2027; the camera pendant Apple had been working on is on hold; and the polarizer-free display that was once expected on the 20th-anniversary iPhone has moved to the late-2029 Pro models.
No insider report about an unannounced iPad, Mac, AirPods, Vision Pro, HomePod or Apple TV product appeared in this window. Ming-Chi Kuo's newest post remains his September 1 MediaTek note and Ross Young's remains his August 31 post, so neither analyst published an Apple component claim in these 24 hours either.

A band with no screen

Bloomberg reported at 16:21 UTC that Apple is developing a screenless health and fitness tracker similar to Whoop's wrist-worn device, part of an effort to rethink its smartwatch lineup and add new wearable technologies. The company has been exploring the category for several months and is now developing prototypes, according to people with knowledge of the work, and the effort has support from top executives — but Apple has not decided whether to release the product 3. Mark Gurman, who wrote the story, posted it at 17:05 4.
The relays that followed fill in the shape of the thing. 9to5Mac, reading the same story, describes prototypes built around a thin fabric band with a sensor-equipped computing module, and places the project in a phase Apple calls a technology investigation, with no release before 2028 — if Apple decides to release it at all 5. MacRumors describes the same prototype as a fabric band attached to a computing module that rests on the wrist, with sensors tracking heart rate and other metrics in the way the Apple Watch does, and notes that the company has already been exploring the category for months 6. AppleInsider treats the phase as a research topic rather than a development programme and scores the rumour "possible" 7.
The reason the health team is moving this way is a matter of record. Eddy Cue, Apple's services chief, took charge of Apple's health teams in October 2025 after Jeff Williams left the company 8. Bloomberg reports that Cue has pushed the health team to adopt features from newer rivals, whose products offer simpler interfaces focused squarely on fitness and health tracking, where the Apple Watch serves a broader range of purposes 5. MacRumors puts Apple chair Tim Cook alongside Cue as an executive interested in the product, and adds that the Watch has already been absorbing the rivals' ideas — a readiness score and an estimate of biological age among them — with a redesigned Health app now in testing inside iOS 27.2 6.
The category those rivals have built is worth putting numbers to. 9to5Mac relayed Reuters' reporting that Oura is preparing an initial public offering after selling 3.6 million rings in the 12 months ending June 30, with revenue up 74% to $1.21 billion for the nine months ending June 30. Apple remains the dominant player in the smartwatch market itself 5.
What this is not: an announcement, a plan, or a date. Apple has commented on nothing, and the words "technology investigation" are Apple's own label for exploratory work rather than a product programme. The only firm number in the report is a floor — 2028 — which is where the band lands if the project survives and Apple decides to ship it. Anyone weighing a Whoop or an Oura because a watch is not what they want to wear learns from this that Apple's own answer is at least two years out.

A redesigned Watch, as early as late 2027

The second signal sits inside the same Bloomberg story, in a passage about the watch itself: Apple is working on a major update to its smartwatch lineup for release as early as late 2027, a redesign that would follow years of more incremental changes. Apple made the main watch thinner with the Series 10 two years ago, while the larger Ultra model has kept the same look since its debut four years ago 5.
For a reader weighing the Watch that is on sale now, the useful part is the limit of the claim. The Series 12 starts at $399, with a new chip, twice the RAM of the Series 10 and a redesigned sensor package 9, and Bloomberg names no part of what a redesign would change. The date given is the earliest case rather than a plan, so a reader who wants a different case shape or a different sensor set should read this as late 2027 at the soonest.

The pendant is on hold

Bloomberg's story carries a second wearable finding, and it is a subtraction rather than an addition: "Apple has also been working on an AI pendant with a camera, though that project has been postponed. The device was conceived as something users could wear as a necklace, attach to clothing or place elsewhere on the body, gathering visual data for processing by the new Siri AI assistant." Gurman quoted that passage on his own account at 19:09 10.
How far that project had got is documented. MacRumors' relay of The Information's January report described a pin about the size of an AirTag — a thin, flat circular disc in an aluminium and glass shell, carrying two cameras (a standard lens and a wide-angle), three microphones and a speaker, with a physical control button along one edge and wireless charging like an Apple Watch. The same report said the pin could be released as soon as 2027 while cautioning that development was early enough to be cancelled 11. Tuesday's MacRumors write-up repeats the AirTag-sized disc, the aluminium and glass, and the side button, and notes that earlier reporting had pointed to a launch as soon as 2027 12. 9to5Mac, which relayed the finding at 19:01, recalled that the same reporter described the pendant in February as an always-on camera for the iPhone with a microphone for Siri input, and noted that Apple is now focused instead on putting AI into the Apple Watch, with camera-equipped AirPods and smart glasses due in 2027 13.
AppleInsider's relay adds the one thing the reporting does not contain, and says so plainly: the Bloomberg article neither explains nor alludes to why the project is on hold beyond its being delayed for unnamed reasons 14. For the reader, the practical effect is on the shape of Apple's 2027 wearable line-up: glasses and camera AirPods, not a pin.

The polarizer-free display slipped to 2029

MacRumors reported at 13:27 UTC, citing the display research firm UBI Research, that Apple's 2029 Pro iPhones could adopt an OLED technology called Color Filter on Encapsulation. CoE removes the polarizer from the panel and places a colour filter directly on top of the encapsulation layer. A polarizer suppresses reflections from ambient light, but it also absorbs a significant share of the light the display produces, so removing it lets a panel reach higher brightness at the same power or hold the same brightness at lower power, and dropping a layer makes the assembly thinner, freeing internal space for the battery and cameras 1516.
Samsung commercialised the technology first, branding it Eco² OLED, on the Galaxy Z Fold3; Samsung's own figures for that implementation are 33% better light transmission and up to 25% lower power consumption than a panel using a conventional polarizer 1517. Doing it without a polarizer is hard: reflections then have to be controlled through colour filters, black pixel-defining layers, low-reflection coatings and other optical measures, and UBI Research's reading is that the difficulty of holding outdoor visibility, viewing angles, contrast and colour accuracy is why Apple waits until 2029 before bringing CoE to its high-volume models 15.
AppleInsider relayed the same research at 14:46 and carried a second, different explanation from the Korean trade paper ET News. On that account, Apple had been reported in April to be planning CoE for the 20th-anniversary iPhone due in September 2027, and now concludes that the technology would add cost to the iPhone at a moment when prices have already had to rise; ET News also reports that Apple had not regarded CoE as mature enough to use at scale until recently 1819. The two explanations are not the same one — the research firm points at display performance, the trade paper at price — and neither outlet cites Apple for either.
Two further details sit on the supply side. Reports before the iPhone Duo's unveiling said its Samsung-supplied folding panel would use CoE, and UBI Research treats the foldable as a potential first step toward polarizer-free panels across the Pro line; no teardown has yet confirmed whether the Duo's panel uses it 1518. UBI Research estimates annual panel demand for the two Pro models at 90 million to 100 million units, with Samsung Display and LG Display expected to lead the supply and BOE able to compete if it meets Apple's requirements 15.
The decision-relevant fact is the date. The phone this display was once reported against arrives next year and, on this account, will not have it; the technology is now expected in the Pro models of late 2029. A reader holding back an upgrade because they want the brighter, thinner screen is looking at three more years.

Three strings in Apple's own apps

Apple released a batch of app updates on Tuesday, and Aaron Perris, who reads Apple's software for MacRumors, went through them.
  • iCloud for Windows 15.10.39.0 appears to be preparing a File Explorer folder of its own for Shared Photo Streams, separate from iCloud Photos, with thumbnails appearing before the photos download — the same placeholder sync that Drive and Photos already use 20.
  • Apple TV for Android 3.0 adds a Sign Language switch in Settings, offering American Sign Language and British Sign Language, and adds an extra-large size to the home-screen widgets, which previously came in small, medium and large 21.
  • Shazam for Android 16.60 shows Apple working on support for Boomplay, the African streaming service, inside the app 22.
  • Beats for Android 2.12 adds support for the Beats 360 headphones that went on pre-order on Tuesday, and raises the app's minimum to Android 14 from Android 13 23.
These are features in flight rather than products. The evidence is a build anyone can install, which makes each find checkable, and none of it comes with a date: an app shipping a string tells you the work exists, not that it will reach users. The iCloud find is the most substantial of the four, because it points at a change to the way a Windows user sees their photo library rather than at a new option in a settings screen.

What to watch next

  • October — the earliest month that fits the window Gurman has given for the home hub, which remains the next product Apple is expected to show; an event invitation is the thing to check for 24.
  • Friday, October 16 and Friday, October 23 — iPhone Duo pre-orders open and the phone goes on sale.
  • Late 2027 — the earliest date Bloomberg puts on a redesigned Apple Watch, and the earliest point at which the Ultra's case would change from the shape it has kept since its debut four years ago.
  • 2028 — the earliest the screenless band could reach a shelf, if Apple decides to release it. The signal to watch is the project leaving the phase Apple calls a technology investigation.
  • Late 2029 — the date UBI Research now gives for CoE on the two Pro iPhones, three years past the 20th-anniversary phone it was once reported against.
  • The pendant — whether any follow-up names a reason for the hold or gives the product a new date.
  • Ming-Chi Kuo and Ross Young — both silent since the start of the month. Either publishing on a band, a Watch case or an OLED stack would be the first analyst corroboration of this window's reporting.

What stayed out

  • MacRumors' Tuesday write-up of the home hub's operating system — the homeOS name taken from shell-company trademark filings, the 6-inch to 7-inch square display, multi-user support, an interface that resizes as someone approaches, and the list of preinstalled apps. The write-up reads the same September 20 Power On newsletter that the September 21 issue covered in full, and the device itself was carried then 2526.
  • The shipped 27.2 public betas: the first public builds of iOS, iPadOS, macOS Golden Gate, tvOS and watchOS 27.2, carrying the redesigned Health app, new Apple TV app profile options, and Siri AI in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. A software release rather than an insider report, and each feature was carried when the developer builds showed it, with the lab-ordering switch noted in this issue's lead 12.
  • The Beats 360, which went on pre-order at $349.99 with interchangeable ear cushions and a $9.99 introductory cushion price, plus a 4A262 firmware released the same morning. An Apple announcement about a product Apple has already launched 2728.
  • The new Mac mini's soldered NAND, which ends the aftermarket storage upgrades that worked on the M4 generation, and the single NAND chip behind the 256GB configuration's roughly half-speed drive. Both are measurements of hardware already in buyers' hands 29.
  • News, regulation and services with no unannounced product behind them: the Apple Card savings account's APY rising from 3.4% to 3.5%; Tap to Pay on iPhone reaching eight more Latin American markets; Apple's RAW support list gaining 11 cameras; Tim Cook meeting European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen while the bloc pushes child-safety rules; Apple Maps reportedly blurring locations in China; the amicus briefs filed before the Supreme Court hears the Epic case; the Apple Park Visitor Center losing the augmented-reality model it had shown since 2017; and Shazam's frostier icon and 13 new iMessage stickers, with the Ariana Grande set removed 3031323334353637.
  • Majin Bu's thread on a phone photo circulating on Weibo. He began by saying he could not tell whether the image was real, then reported that the person who published it told him it was a second-generation iPhone Air with a heavily changed body, then reported that his own sources describe the model as in internal testing with no evidence it will be released. Nothing in that chain is corroborated outside the account, and the account withdrew its certainty at each step 383940.
  • Ice Universe's chart placing the A20 Pro ahead of Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, and his own read of that chip at 4,300-plus single-core and around 13,000 multi-core. A comparison between chips in phones already on sale, measured by a commentator rather than reported by an insider 4142.
  • MacRumors' recap of the seven products it expects Apple to announce next month, and the iPhone 18 and iPhone 20 round-ups published the same day. Round-ups rebuilt from the iPad mini, Apple TV, HomePod mini, MacBook Pro and home hub reporting this channel carried on September 14 and 21, and from the iPhone 20 Pro display leak carried on September 21 4344.
