The Full Time Report — Episode 96: City finish strong, Chelsea wobble, and the friendlies tell on everyone
Sunday's football stayed in pre-season, but it gave the Premier League's biggest clubs a few uncomfortable clues. Manchester City came from behind to beat Atlético Madrid 3–1, while Chelsea drew 3–3 with Johor Darul Ta'zim, Arsenal lost 3–2 to Borussia Dortmund, and Liverpool surrendered a two-goal lead against Monaco. There were no Premier League, Champions League or Europa League fixtures in the day's schedule. 1
What you'll hear
- Manchester City: Omar Marmoush scored twice in three minutes, both goals supplied by Antoine Semenyo, before Rayan Aït-Nouri sealed the win over Atlético. 2
- Chelsea: Liam Delap scored two penalties, Johor scored three times, and a late own goal rescued the draw. Aaron Anselmino also went off injured in the first half. 3
- Arsenal: Ethan Nwaneri and Viktor Gyökeres scored in the 3–2 defeat by Dortmund. Mikel Arteta explained what Bruno Guimarães is expected to add, while also giving injury updates on Jurrien Timber and William Saliba. 4
- Liverpool: Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz put Liverpool two goals up before Monaco won 3–2. Andoni Iraola said the side could not sustain its level for ninety minutes; Jeremy Jacquet and Curtis Jones were the nearest-term fitness updates. 56
- The transfer desk: Lucas Digne's move from Aston Villa to Paris Saint-Germain and Trevoh Chalobah's move from Chelsea to Como were confirmed. Fulham agreed a deal worth up to £30m for Shea Charles, while reports linked Premier League clubs with Endrick, Bradley Barcola, Lamine Camara and Joaquin Seys. 78
The useful distinction running through the episode is certainty. A completed transfer, an agreed deal and a reported interest are three different things; a pre-season result can reveal a problem without deciding a season.
