Battlestar Galactica returns through Ghost Galaxy, Artengarten takes the German Games Prize, and Garfield's titans bid to stay out of a fight

Ghost Galaxy brings Battlestar Galactica back through Universal and Fantasy Flight, Artengarten wins Germany's public-voted game of the year as SPIEL opens on record numbers, Chaosium pulls more than 40 community titles over AI text, and Final Titan's designer diary explains the auction that pays players to stay out of a fight.

The desk covers 21 to 23 October 2026. SPIEL Essen opened on Thursday with its first three days already sold out, and the trade side of the week had filed by Wednesday afternoon.
A 2008 classic is going back into print, Germany has chosen its game of the year, and Chaosium has shown what it does about machine-written scenarios. Richard Garfield published the design story of the week the same day.

Battlestar Galactica comes back through Fantasy Flight's founder

Ghost Galaxy has an agreement with Universal Consumer Products & Games, part of NBCUniversal, and with Fantasy Flight Games to publish a new edition of Corey Konieczka's Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game. 1
The original appeared from FFG in 2008, adapting the television series that ran from 2003 to 2009. 1
Ghost Galaxy is working on an updated design, and will crowdfund it in early 2027. 1
"I had the pleasure to oversee the publication of this phenomenal board game during its first lease on life," said Christian T. Petersen, Ghost Galaxy's chief executive and FFG's founder. 1
Bill Altig, FFG's senior vice president of narrative games, said the company was "thrilled to have Ghost Galaxy take on this classic game". 1
Whether the three expansions — Pegasus, Exodus and Daybreak — come back with it is unanswered. 1
"We have no further details to share at this time," Ghost Galaxy's marketing coordinator Jeremy Culver told Board Game Beat. 1
Two strands built this deal. Ghost Galaxy has carried Nerdlab's Mindbug in North America since 2023 and still publishes its standalone games and expansions. 1
It also takes on licensed designs as the rights become available, and releases its own edition of Nerdlab's Final Titan in late November. 1
For a designer with an old design under licence, the route is worth tracing. The rights came back through the two companies that held them, and the publisher that won them already knew the designer.

Artengarten takes the German Games Prize as the fair sells out

The Deutscher Spiele Preis, Germany's game of the year voted by the German-speaking public, went to Artengarten at the SPIEL press conference on Wednesday. 2 Feuerland publishes it and Mathias Wigge designed it. 3
Boss Fighters QR from Pegasus Spiele took second and Galactic Cruise from PD-Verlag third. 2
The children's prize went to Toriki: Eine Insel voller Abenteuer, designed by Wojciech Grajkowski for Mirakulus. 2
It is the second win for Wigge and Feuerland, after Ark Nova in 2022. 2 The new game is that one's lighter sibling, sold with the subtitle "Ein Arche Nova-Spiel". 2
The spec is the part worth copying out. Artengarten runs one to five players at about 20 minutes a player, ages 12 and up, for €49.90. 2 Ark Nova asks 90 to 150 minutes for the same zoo-building idea. 2
The vote ran for three months and was open to the German-speaking public; many thousands took part. 3 That makes the result a reading of what those players respond to.

The organiser, Merz Verlag, expects 230,000 visitors against 220,000 last year, which would be the fourth consecutive record edition. 2 Tickets for Thursday, Friday and Saturday were gone by Wednesday morning, with Sunday on the same path. 2
Floor space reached 81,200 square metres across all eight halls, up 4.8%, with Hall 8 in regular use for the first time. 2 The 997 exhibitors come from 53 countries, against 948 from 50 in 2025. 2
Germany leads the exhibitor list with 285 stands, then the United States on 102, France on 54, China on 47 and Poland on 42. 2 Argentina, Indonesia, Iceland, Kuwait and Slovakia have booths for the first time. 2
Publishers registered 1,885 new products, 9.6% more than last year, and 1,023 of them were shown to press at the Novelty Show. 2 Merz Verlag reads two trends across the list: pop-culture licences from Batman to Fourth Wing, and nature and cozy games. 2
Germany's own market figures came out at the same event. The Spieleverlage e.V. association's Board Games INDEX is a survey of its publisher members, answered by 49% of them between 28 September and 9 October. 2
Games and puzzles grew 8% over the first nine months of 2026, against 3% for the whole toy market. 2 Inside the category, market researcher Circana has strategic trading cards up 17% and adult games up more than 20%, helped by one music party game. 2
69% of the publishers surveyed call adult players with nostalgic or collector habits a large or very large part of their future. 2
Association chairman Hermann Hutter said the pandemic boom could not have held its pace, and that the last two years show the appetite for games has stayed. 2

Chaosium removes 40 community titles over AI text

Chaosium has taken more than 40 publications out of its DriveThruRPG community content programmes, saying they contained AI-generated text. 4
The four programmes are the Miskatonic Repository for Call of Cthulhu, the Jonstown Compendium for RuneQuest and Glorantha, Companions of Arthur for Pendragon, and Sagas of the North. 4
The review combines staff judgement with several detection tools. 4 Chaosium lists the signs: unusually uniform formatting, a relentlessly breathless present tense, rules and lore errors, scenarios that are long to read and hard to run, and publishing schedules no writer could keep. 4
"When a brand new author appears out of nowhere and publishes one or more new scenarios daily, our suspicions are aroused, and soon confirmed on inspection," the company wrote. 4
The removals carry forward. Ambassadors will keep reviewing, and further work from an affected creator will also be pulled. 4
Chaosium has named neither creators nor titles, and said none of the affected authors belonged to its Facebook writers' groups. 4
Its advice to contributors is one line: "Just don't use AI." 4 That covers ideas, drafted text, summarising, rules checks, statistics, art, layout, blurbs and covers, with a warning that Copilot, Gemini and aggressive autocorrect replace a writer's voice. 4
The policy widens a 2023 rule that barred AI art from new community titles. 4 DriveThruRPG itself stopped accepting commercial titles primarily written by language models from July 2023. 4

Three smaller moves on the rights side

AMIGO's two best-known party games return to North America through Maestro Media, which will publish Halli Galli as Fruit Punch and Speed Cups in the second quarter of 2027. 5 Halli Galli has sold more than 11 million copies since 1990. 5
AMIGO ran its own US division from 2018 until the end of 2025, and Pandasaurus took Bohnanza, Saboteur and 6 nimmt! Baron Oxx for the fourth quarter of 2026. 5 Its American catalogue is now split between two publishers, title by title.
Maestro Media also announced Big Buck Hunter: The Board Game with Play Mechanix, the Skokie studio behind the arcade original, for June 2027. 6 The hunt runs three rounds, one player taking the Hunter's role while the others lay tiles to build the wildlife landscape. 6
Ravensburger and Hans im Glück have put two of their own licences into one box: Carcassonne Labyrinth arrives in December at $39.99, for one to four players aged eight and up in 30 minutes. 7
Tiles laid in the maze shift the landscape, and treasure tiles pushed out of it become the cities and roads. 7

New and coming

Diablo: Unbound battles downward

Blizzard and Glass Cannon Unplugged announced Diablo: Unbound at SPIEL on Wednesday, with a Gamefound campaign to come and a launch in the first quarter of 2027. 89 Glass Cannon Unplugged adapted Don't Starve, Dying Light and Apex Legends before this. 9
The game is a cooperative dungeon battler for one to four players, built on deck-building and dice. 8
The campaign runs three acts of three dungeon levels, with powerful bosses at the end of each act. 8 Loot is randomised, and bigger risks pay better. 8
Between dungeons, players take a Town Phase to upgrade skills, manage loot and respec. 8 A dungeon runs 60 to 90 minutes and an act three to four hours, and a Torment mode lets a finished party fight any boss in its ultimate form. 8
Four classes ship at launch — Barbarian, Rogue, Sorceress and Paladin — each with its own skill tree, and more arrive as stretch goals and expansions. 8
"You get the high-stakes showdowns of a boss battler — and hordes of monsters that never let up," said Jakub Wiśniewski, Glass Cannon Unplugged's chief executive. 8 "You don't crawl through dungeons. You battle your way down. That's why we call it a dungeon battler." 8

Final Titan: bid for the right to stay out of the fight

Richard Garfield and Christian Kudahl published a designer diary for Final Titan on BoardGameGeek on 22 October, the day the show opened with Nerdlab selling it in German and English editions. 10 Ghost Galaxy's edition follows in late November. 1
Each player drafts three titans. The titans fight one at a time in the middle of the table, the winner stays there, and the other players then spend resources to avoid being the one who has to go in. 10
Fights resolve on a single die, which sets off attacks, rerolls and the titans' abilities. 10
The diary's subject is the bid. It began as chips, which already worked because their value depended on what everyone else had left. 10 Garfield and Kudahl turned the chips into cards so that each one spent dodging a fight also carried a use. 10
That change threatened the design from both sides. Cards strong enough to swing a battle turn the game into collecting and spending cards, and nobody bothers to duck a fight. 10 Cards too weak stop mattering, and chips would have been the better answer. 10
"The cards had to be strong enough to consider and compare, but not so strong that you wouldn't look at a fight and say… 'nah, I think this should be someone else's problem,'" Garfield wrote. 10 The version that held made cards situationally good, tied to particular titans or matchups. 10
Speed was the second constraint. Cards playable mid-fight invite "wait, go back, I didn't get a chance to play this", so the windows narrowed to before the roll, before the fight and after it ends. 10
Garfield's comparisons are his own games. King of Tokyo was his attempt to make Yahtzee interactive, and it restricts a player to hitting the leader, who can always retreat. 10
The No Thanks! bid gets to the same place by another door: nobody picks on a named player, and everyone pays to stay out.
Scope was Garfield's condition for signing. He wanted 100 titans in the box, against the 20 or 30 most publishers would attempt, and Nerdlab's Marvin Hegen agreed on the spot. 10

Minikin City: every card is worth two things

Dale Yu reviewed Minikin City on 22 October. Simone Luciani and Matthieu Verdier designed it, Cranio Creations publishes it and Capstone Games distributes it in the United States, for two to five players aged 10 and up. 11
A row of reward cards on the table sets the game. Nine are dealt for the player count, and a tile covers the rightmost so only its colour shows. 11
The row gives each of the eight rounds a preferred colour and a ladder of rewards for whoever finishes highest. 11
Everyone plays one city card into their own tableau each round. 11 A card's colour and number decide your rank in that round, and its icons and text decide what it pays at the end. 11
Rank does two jobs. It places your marker on the reward card, which hands out Minikins, tokens, ribbons and points. 11 It also sets the order for drafting the next card, with the weakest card played choosing first. 11
Minikins are what switch a scoring card on, and in an ordinary game only two to four cards get filled. 11 Yu's finding is that the draft order carries the tension, because the low cards hold more scoring icons while costing you position. 11
A hand of four Minikin City cards above a game table, with a large number in each corner, a coloured band across the top and scoring icons beside it
A hand of four city cards, each carrying a value in the corner, a colour band and its own icon rules: the two readings a player has to weigh on every play. Image: Opinionated Gamers
He rates it "I love it" and calls it his first sure-fire hit of the show. Games finish in 15 to 20 minutes against the 30 on the box. 11

What to do with this desk

SPIEL runs to Sunday, and the prize gives you a price to check against your own prototype. The winning design was a lighter version of an existing hit, sold at €49.90. 2
If a community content programme is your route to market, Chaosium has published the test it applies, and publication volume is the first thing it looks at. 4
The mechanic to test this week is the paid opt-out. Charge players for the right to stay out of a fight, and watch whether the argument at the table moves from who to attack to who can afford to wait.
