Hantavirus Global Situational Briefing - July 28, 2026

Argentina's BEN 818 adds one cumulative hantavirosis event while keeping the year-to-date signal above expected and the latest four weeks below expected; no new linked outbreak or official escalation is verified elsewhere.

Executive read

Argentina's latest national bulletin is the only verified numerical change since the previous briefing. BEN 818, covering epidemiological week 28 (12-18 July), lists 52 accumulated 2026 hantavirosis events against a 2022-2025 median of 36. The bulletin keeps the year-to-date comparison above expected, while its latest-four-week comparison remains below expected. 1
That update should be read as a surveillance revision, not as evidence of a new Argentine outbreak cluster. The previous issue cited 51 events against a median of 34 in BEN 817. Both the observed count and the displayed reference value changed, and the quick table does not provide province, strain, exposure, fatality or laboratory-method detail.
No new linked outbreak or official escalation was verified in the other main tracks reviewed for this morning's edition. Ukraine still has one publicly reported laboratory-confirmed HFRS case with an unresolved exposure site. Venezuela still has three confirmed deaths but no public denominator. The M/V Hondius Andes-virus event remains closed at 13 cases and three deaths.

Signal table

Argentina52 accumulated 2026 hantavirosis events versus a 2022-2025 median of 36; year-to-date above expected, latest four weeks below expected. 1The main new global surveillance change, but not a quantified cluster or seasonal case series.
UkraineOne laboratory-confirmed HFRS case in a 53-year-old man from Stryi, Lviv region; exposure location, virus species and genotype remain unresolved. 2A confirmed individual case, not a documented cluster.
EU/EEAECDC's week 30 threat report covers 18-24 July and contains no hantavirus item. 3No new ECDC escalation in that bulletin. Its silence does not establish zero European incidence.
VenezuelaThree confirmed hantavirus deaths in Anzoategui; two deaths of health professionals in Barinas remain under investigation. 4Serious but under-quantified. No case-fatality or cluster-size estimate is supportable.
M/V HondiusWHO records 12 laboratory-confirmed and one probable case, with three deaths; identified contacts completed follow-up without additional secondary cases. 5Closed human-transmission event. The environmental source question remains separate.

Argentina: one more event, no short-term excess

BEN 818 is the first material change in the daily series. Its quick surveillance table reports 52 accumulated events in calendar year 2026, compared with a 2022-2025 median of 36. The same table labels the year-to-date comparison as above expected and the latest-four-week comparison as below expected. Those two statements can coexist: the cumulative line can remain elevated while recent reporting is not above its comparison baseline. 1
The bulletin covers 12-18 July. It does not turn the national quick-table total into a province-level outbreak description. It does not identify the virus strain, exposure setting, deaths or diagnostic method behind the 52 events. Those fields should remain open until a disease-specific table or provincial report supplies them.
This also remains separate from the earlier 2025-2026 seasonal series used in Argentine surveillance chapters. A calendar-year quick table and a seasonal case series answer different questions and should not be combined into a single incidence or fatality calculation. The next useful Argentine release would add geographic distribution and clinical outcomes, rather than only moving the national cumulative total.

Europe: Ukraine remains a national signal

The Ukrainian case remains the latest individual European signal in the public record reviewed for this briefing. The Lviv regional health authority reported a 53-year-old man with HFRS and hantavirus RNA detected by serum PCR. The report did not identify a species or genotype, did not establish whether infection occurred in Ukraine or during travel in Croatia, and did not report linked cases. 2
ECDC's week 30 Communicable Disease Threats Report, published for the period 18-24 July, lists other infectious-disease topics but no hantavirus, Andes-virus or Hondius section. This is a bounded statement about one regional bulletin. It does not replace national notification systems and does not support a claim that Europe has no additional infections. 3
The operational distinction is important. Ukraine has a confirmed patient-level signal, while ECDC's bulletin has no selected regional threat item. Those records are compatible because they operate at different reporting levels. The next Ukrainian update that would change the assessment is a second linked case, a defined exposure setting, a species or genotype result, or a clinical outcome that changes the severity picture.

Americas: Venezuela still lacks a denominator

Venezuela's public signal remains three confirmed deaths in Anzoategui, reported from Boca del Pao, while two deaths involving health professionals in Barinas remain under investigation. The available account gives no confirmed or suspected case denominator, onset-date series, municipality-level case list, strain, diagnostic method or rodent findings. 4
The figures therefore cannot support a case-fatality estimate, a national outbreak size, or a conclusion about person-to-person spread. The report described no scientific evidence of human-to-human transmission. The two Barinas deaths should stay outside the confirmed hantavirus count until testing or an official case definition places them there.
The Venezuela item also remains a source-limitation signal: the detailed public account available for this briefing is a Reuters relay of the ministry statement rather than a readable ministry case table. That distinction matters when comparing it with Argentina's structured surveillance bulletin.
Chile is not assigned a current count here because the latest indexed Ministry of Health hantavirus bulletin could not be verified as a readable primary document. Search snippets are not used as a substitute for a national case report.

Asia-Pacific and the closed ship event

No new Asia-Pacific human case signal was verified in the current pass. Singapore's public communication continues to frame the cruise-linked risk as contained and related to international travel, rather than as a local case-count update. Health New Zealand continues to report no identified human or animal hantavirus case, no known person exposed in the country and low local risk. 6 7
WHO's final event notice records 13 ship-linked cases, including 12 laboratory-confirmed Andes-virus infections and one probable case, with three deaths. Identified contacts completed the 42-day follow-up period without additional secondary cases, and WHO assessed the event as no longer posing a public-health risk. CDC separately reported that U.S. monitoring ended without outbreak-related disease among monitored people. 5 8
The unresolved environmental source investigation should not be mistaken for continuing human transmission. A rodent or environmental finding would refine attribution of the ship-linked event; by itself, it would not reopen the closed contact-follow-up assessment.

Research watch: bleeding patterns in HFRS

A 2026 systematic review of haemostatic dysfunction in HFRS pooled 55 studies covering 7,950 patients. Thrombocytopenia was the most consistent abnormality. The review found more severe thrombocytopenia and bleeding in infections associated with Hantaan, Dobrava and Seoul viruses than with Puumala virus, while variable study quality and incomplete reporting prevented firm pooled conclusions. Meta-analysis was not feasible because the studies differed too much in design and outcome reporting. 9
This is a clinical interpretation aid, not a new outbreak signal. HFRS identifies a clinical syndrome, not a virus species. The review supports attention to platelet and coagulation abnormalities in clinical care, but it does not allow the Ukrainian case to be assigned a strain or prognosis from the public case notice alone.

Watchpoints for the next briefing

  1. Argentina: a newer disease-specific bulletin or provincial breakdown that explains the 52-event national quick-table total.
  2. Ukraine: clinical outcome, exposure location, species or genotype, and any linked cases.
  3. Venezuela: a confirmed and suspected denominator, diagnostic details, onset dates, municipality-level geography and rodent findings.
  4. Europe and Asia-Pacific: a national notification or authority alert that changes the current post-response posture.
  5. M/V Hondius: ecological or genomic results identifying a source. Such a result would refine attribution, not by itself reopen the transmission event.
At 08:00 on 28 July 2026, the global assessment is narrow but actionable: Argentina's cumulative calendar-year signal has moved to 52 events while its recent four-week comparison remains below expected; Ukraine remains a single confirmed HFRS case with unresolved exposure; Venezuela remains serious but unquantified; and the M/V Hondius human-transmission event remains closed.
