The Full Time Report — Episode 110: Chelsea's new era, Watkins' Villa break-up, and the deadline squeeze

Chelsea have started the new Premier League season with a three-two win at Fulham, but the scoreline only tells half the story. The other half is what Xabi Alonso's first night in charge says about a squad still being built.

Chelsea have opened the Premier League season with a lively three-two win at Fulham, but the bigger question is what the result actually tells us about Xabi Alonso's new side. Around that, Aston Villa are trying to manage the possible break-up with Ollie Watkins, while Nottingham Forest are working on a deal for Chelsea striker Liam Delap.

Chelsea start the Alonso era with a proper test

Chelsea led after just 32 seconds through Joao Pedro, were pegged back by Josh King, then restored their lead through Morgan Rogers on his debut. Cole Palmer made it three early in the second half, Gonzalo Garcia pulled one back, and Chelsea had to defend the final stretch rather than cruise through it. 1
The useful part is the shape of the performance. Chelsea created enough to deserve the lead, then had to cope with the game becoming less controlled. Alonso described the display as professional, solid and mature, while also saying Chelsea failed to choose the right pressing moments for a spell after Fulham equalised. 2
The three goals also came from three different kinds of contribution: Joao Pedro's movement behind the line, Rogers arriving for a debut goal, and Palmer finishing an attack after combining with both teammates. That is encouraging. The warning is just as clear: Chelsea did not put the game away, and Robert Sanchez still had work to do late on.
Monday's result was the only Premier League fixture listed for 24 August. BBC Sport, Sky Sports and the Guardian all record Fulham two, Chelsea three. 345
The match also offered an early look at Alonso's structure. Chelsea's official report lists a back three, wing-backs, two central midfielders and three advanced attackers. The arrangement helped Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro find dangerous positions, but it also placed a premium on pressing together and protecting the channels. 1
That is useful evidence, not a final verdict. Chelsea created three goals through movement and combinations, then had to manage two spells after Fulham pulled goals back. Alonso's point about choosing the right pressing moments captures the next question: can Chelsea keep those distances clean when an opponent changes the rhythm? 2

Reading the deadline desk

The Watkins and Delap stories sit at different stages, even though both are deadline-week headlines. Watkins has rejected bids around him, a player absence and reported interest in the move. Delap has talks, a reported asking price and no clarity yet about whether the deal would be permanent or a loan. Neither is a completed transfer. That distinction is the useful part of the day's transfer coverage.
For Villa, the question is what happens to the forward line if Watkins goes. For Chelsea, the question is whether clearing a place in a thirty-nine-player senior squad leaves enough depth behind Joao Pedro. For Forest, the deal structure changes the risk of adding competition for Chris Wood and Igor Jesus. 67
The first of September deadline can force movement, but it does not turn a bid into a signing. A rejected offer is one status. Talks are another. A medical, contract agreement and club announcement are different steps again. Keeping those columns separate makes a busy market easier to follow.

Watkins and the Villa problem

Ollie Watkins' future has moved from transfer noise to a squad problem. BBC Sport reports that Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal have had four offers rejected, with the latest close to forty million pounds but still below Aston Villa's asking price. Watkins was left out of the opening-day squad, has been training on his own after an extended break, and is understood to be open to the move. A deal is still described as some way off. 6
The distinction matters. This is not a completed transfer, and it is not simply a player being linked in a gossip column. There is a rejected bid, a player absent from the squad, a club trying to protect its valuation, and a deadline approaching. Those are four separate facts, and the final outcome can still change.
For Villa, the football question is bigger than the fee. Watkins has scored 108 goals in 278 games for the club, and Villa are already dealing with other changes in the forward line. A replacement would have to cover goals, running and familiarity with Unai Emery's demands. The club also still has to resolve Emiliano Martinez's future, while the opening-day four-nil defeat at Brighton made the squad pressure feel immediate. BBC's report says Villa are considering options including Nicolas Jackson, but it does not describe a Watkins replacement as done. 6

Chelsea's squad squeeze points towards Forest

The other Chelsea story is Liam Delap. BBC Sport reports that Nottingham Forest are working on a deal, with Chelsea making the striker available for fifty million pounds. Delap was training separately, was left out against Fulham, and it remained unclear whether the talks concerned a permanent transfer or a loan. 7
That makes this a negotiation, not a transfer announcement. Delap joined Chelsea from Ipswich for thirty million pounds just over a year ago, scored one Premier League goal last season, and had shoulder and hamstring injuries. Forest would be looking for competition for Chris Wood and Igor Jesus, while Chelsea are trying to reduce a senior squad that BBC says numbers thirty-nine players before the 1 September deadline. 7
Put the two Chelsea stories together and the opening win has a second layer. Joao Pedro scored on his league debut, Rogers scored on his Chelsea debut, and Palmer remains central to the attack. At the same time, Delap is outside the first-team picture and the club is still clearing space. A good result can coexist with a messy squad build. That is probably the most honest read of Chelsea after one match.

Europe is quiet, but the calendar is not

There was no Champions League or Europa League match on Monday. UEFA's Champions League calendar moves from the play-off first legs on 18 and 19 August to the second legs on 25 and 26 August, followed by the league-phase draw on 27 August. 8
The Europa League calendar also shows no match on 24 August, with the next listed play-off date on 27 August and the league-phase draw on 28 August. 9
So tonight's European talking point is not a result. It is the change in the week ahead: Champions League qualification is about to be decided, while the Europa League route is about to settle into its league phase. For the clubs still involved, the next few days are about availability, travel and whether the squad is ready for a tie that can change the whole autumn.

What to carry into Tuesday

Chelsea's win is a promising start, not a verdict on the Alonso project. The performance showed attacking connections and enough resilience to survive a difficult finish. The next test is whether Chelsea can turn those flashes into control.
Villa need clarity more urgently. If Watkins stays, the club has to restore a workable relationship and decide how he fits after being left out. If he goes, Villa need a replacement quickly, and the fee alone will not answer the football problem.
Forest and Chelsea are still in the middle of the Delap conversation. Until the deal type, fee and paperwork are clear, it stays in the talks column.
That is the shape of the day: one result we can call a result, two transfer stories that are still moving, and a European calendar pointing at the next turn. Thanks for listening. See you tomorrow.
