iOS 27 RC leaks: Visual Intelligence ad support, cross-domain passkeys, and a redesigned TV Remote
Firmware analysis of the newly seeded iOS 27 Release Candidate reveals code for sponsored search results in Visual Intelligence, cross-domain passkey support, and an expanded iPhone TV Remote panel, while Mark Gurman confirms unannounced hardware remains on track for later autumn.
Apple closed its September 9 keynote with official unveilings of the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, and Series 12 watches 12. Immediately following the presentation, Apple seeded the iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 Release Candidate builds to registered developers, locking the feature set for public deployment on Monday, September 14 3.
With hardware announcements settled, the leak surface shifted overnight to firmware analysis. Code findings inside the Release Candidate expose upcoming software capabilities that Apple left unmentioned during the keynote, spanning sponsored visual search queries, cross-domain credential handling, and a redesigned navigation model for Apple TV remote control.
Sponsored search results in Visual Intelligence
Code inside the iOS 27 Release Candidate indicates that Apple is developing support for sponsored items inside Visual Intelligence 4. The finding comes from MacRumors contributing researcher Aaron Perris, who has tracked Apple firmware and operating system backends since 2021 5.
The architecture in the build allows external search providers to supply sponsored or promoted image results when a user directs the camera at an object. Instead of Apple building its own merchant advertising sales division, the framework enables third-party search partners, such as Google or Amazon, to populate visual search responses with paid commercial listings 4.
The code string confirms the underlying capability in iOS 27 while leaving the financial and operational terms undisclosed. The firmware reveals no details regarding whether Apple takes a revenue share from partner-served sponsored images. It also leaves open whether sponsored image placements will appear at public launch on September 14 or remain dormant behind server flags for a later point release.
Cross-domain passkeys in Safari and iCloud Keychain
A separate code path identified by Perris in the iOS 27 Release Candidate introduces passkey support across related domains owned by a single company 6.
In existing iOS releases, a WebAuthn passkey binds cryptographically to the exact fully qualified domain name on which it was registered. Users who access a service through distinct regional or corporate domains, such as a primary
.com store and a localized .co.uk site, must create separate authentication credentials for each address. The new iOS 27 code permits a single passkey to authenticate across multiple related top-level domains, provided the hosting organization publishes a verified association manifest that Safari can validate against 6.This change aligns Apple's credential stack with the FIDO Alliance related-origin specification. It removes friction for multinational services while preserving origin-binding protections against phishing. The verification requirement depends on web administrators hosting the proper configuration file on their domains before Safari will recognize cross-domain credentials.
Expanded iPhone TV Remote panel with app grid and watchlist
The third iOS 27 Release Candidate discovery reveals a structural overhaul for the Apple TV Remote panel in iOS 7.
Under the new implementation, dragging upward from the lower edge of the virtual remote interface collapses the directional touchpad to make room for four horizontal, swipeable pages: Apps, Watchlist, Top Shelf, and Now Playing 7.
The Apps page renders a phone-side grid containing every app installed on the connected Apple TV box. Users can launch tvOS apps directly from their handset screen, bypassing on-screen home menu navigation. The interface sorts apps automatically by launch frequency and provides options to hide unused items 7. This design shifts television app selection from physical screen scanning to local handheld filtering.
Gurman's autumn hardware roadmap: Apple TV, HomePod mini, and home display
Several hardware categories rumored throughout the summer remained absent from the September 9 keynote stage, including an updated Apple TV console, a revised HomePod mini, a smart home command display, and a touchscreen MacBook.
Bloomberg chief Apple correspondent Mark Gurman posted a roadmap timing clarification directly after the keynote, noting that the absence of these devices on September 9 reflects Apple's autumn calendar division 8. Gurman advised observers that omitting those four lines from the September presentation is standard scheduling, pointing to later autumn announcements 8.
Gurman's assessment aligns with audioOS 27 beta code discoveries that surfaced earlier this month, including the unreleased
AID12007 speaker family identifier and audio tuning frameworks for expanded multi-speaker arrangements. His note confirms that Apple continues active preparation for these product lines while keeping technical specifications and specific announcement dates for a subsequent hardware window, typically held in October.Signal confidence assessment
| Product / Area | New signal | Primary source | Confidence | Open question |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Visual Intelligence | Code enables sponsored third-party visual search results | Aaron Perris / MacRumors 4 | Medium | Launch-day availability versus later server-side rollout; revenue-split terms with search partners |
| Safari & Passkeys | Cross-domain passkey authentication via verified domain lists | Aaron Perris / MacRumors 6 | Medium | Adoption timeline among major multi-domain web properties and final developer documentation |
| iOS Apple TV Remote | Upward-swipe drawer with Apps, Watchlist, Top Shelf, and Now Playing | Aaron Perris / MacRumors 7 | Medium | Whether the drawer requires a companion tvOS 27 update or operates via existing companion protocols |
| Apple TV & Smart Home | Apple TV, HomePod mini, home display, and touch MacBook remain on autumn roadmap | Mark Gurman / Bloomberg 8 | Medium-Low | Specific distribution between October press releases and a dedicated secondary hardware event |
What to watch next
The following verifiable milestones will determine when and how these signals reach end users:
- September 14, 2026 public releases: Apple will release iOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, and tvOS 27 to the public. Inspecting the final consumer builds will confirm whether the TV Remote drawer and related-domain passkeys are visible in default settings.
- Apple Developer documentation diffs: Apple will publish updated WebKit and Authentication Services API guides for iOS 27, outlining the exact domain manifest format required for cross-domain passkeys.
- October hardware window: Supply-chain shipment monitors and regulatory filings will signal whether Apple schedules a second autumn event or issues press releases for M5-series Macs, updated HomePod hardware, and the new Apple TV.
What stayed out
- Unverified A20 Pro single-core Geekbench score: Reliable leaker Ice Universe posted a claim that the A20 Pro chip reached a single-core score of 4,727 9. While the account has an established track record, no verifiable Geekbench browser database entry or baseline test URL exists in the public repository yet. The score remains an uncorroborated screenshot claim until third-party review units appear in benchmark registries.
- Regional power adapter filing: Aaron Perris documented a new variant of the 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max for the Brazilian market (model A3367). This regulatory accessory update was excluded from the primary digest because it represents an administrative certification rather than consumer feature intelligence.
