Hantavirus Global Situational Briefing — July 27, 2026
Ukraine's confirmed HFRS case remains the latest individual case signal, while Argentina stays cumulatively above its historical reference, Venezuela remains under-quantified, and the M/V Hondius event stays contained.
Executive read
The latest verified new case signal remains Ukraine's laboratory-confirmed hantavirus infection in a 53-year-old man from Stryi, in Lviv region. The patient has haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), and hantavirus RNA was detected by serum PCR. The exposure site is still unknown; the public report does not identify the virus species or genotype, and it reports no linked cases. Local preventive measures and the epidemiological investigation continue. 1
No new WHO or ECDC escalation is documented in the latest public material reviewed for this briefing. Argentina's official index still lists BEN 817 as its newest national bulletin, while the most recent usable disease-specific table shows 51 accumulated 2026 hantavirosis events against a 2022–2025 median of 34. The year-to-date comparison is above expected, but the latest four-week comparison is below expected. Venezuela's last public report remains three confirmed deaths in Anzoátegui, with two Barinas deaths under investigation and no public case denominator. The M/V Hondius Andes-virus event remains closed at 13 cases and three deaths. 2 3 4 5
Signal table
| Signal | Latest verified reading | Assessment at 08:00 on 27 July |
|---|---|---|
| Ukraine | One PCR-confirmed HFRS case in a 53-year-old Stryi resident; infection site unresolved. 1 | A confirmed national surveillance signal, but no documented cluster or transmission route. |
| EU/EEA | ECDC week 30 covers 18–24 July and lists Ebola, West Nile virus infections, Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, malaria, dengue, expert deployment, World Pride and respiratory-virus epidemiology. It contains no hantavirus item. 6 | No new ECDC hantavirus escalation in that bulletin. This does not establish zero European incidence. |
| Argentina | 51 accumulated 2026 hantavirosis events versus a 2022–2025 median of 34; year-to-date above expected, latest four weeks below expected. 3 | Cumulative activity remains elevated in the quick table, without a new short-term excess in its latest-four-week comparison. |
| Venezuela | Three confirmed deaths in Anzoátegui; two Barinas deaths involving health professionals remain under investigation. 4 | Serious but too incomplete for a case-fatality estimate, cluster-size estimate, or strain attribution. |
| M/V Hondius | WHO records 13 cases, 12 laboratory-confirmed and one probable, with three deaths. All identified contacts completed 42-day follow-up without additional secondary cases. 5 | Closed transmission event. The unresolved ecological source investigation is a separate scientific question. |
Ukraine: the case is confirmed, the exposure is not
The Lviv regional health authority reports that illness began on 12 July with fever of 38.6°C, chills, headache, nausea, loss of appetite and calf-muscle pain. The patient was admitted on 15 July. Testing found no Leptospira interrogans antibodies in serum and no Leptospira DNA in urine; serum PCR detected hantavirus RNA. 1
The investigation recorded travel on Croatia's Makarska Riviera from 1–7 July and travel through mountainous areas of Ivano-Frankivsk region on 11 July. The patient denied contact with mouse-like rodents, nests or excreta, time in basements, and food or water that might have been contaminated. The report lists swimming in the Adriatic and washing hands in the Kamyanka River as exposure history, but does not identify either activity as the infection route. Preventive and anti-epidemic measures are being carried out at the patient's place of residence.
Three distinctions prevent over-reading the report:
- HFRS is the clinical syndrome, not a virus species or strain name.
- The report does not say whether infection occurred in Croatia or Ukraine.
- A single confirmed case, without linked cases or a demonstrated common exposure, does not establish an outbreak or person-to-person transmission.
The next useful Ukrainian update would be the patient's outcome, species or genotype result, a more precise exposure assessment, and any additional cases among contacts. Until then, the case belongs in national surveillance, not in a Europe-wide outbreak count.
Europe: a quiet regional bulletin and a live national signal
ECDC's week 30 report was published on 24 July and covers 18–24 July. Its public topic list has no hantavirus, Andes virus or Hondius section. That is a bounded finding about the contents of one weekly threat bulletin. It does not override national reporting, and it does not demonstrate that all European countries had zero cases. 6
ECDC's dedicated Andes-virus page says the ship-linked event was declared over on 2 July and that the page is no longer regularly updated. WHO remains the better source for the final event total. 7
This distinction matters for the Ukrainian case. A national public-health authority can report a confirmed case while a regional threat bulletin remains silent. The two records answer different questions: one describes a patient and an investigation; the other describes threats selected for EU/EEA-level reporting.
The Americas: three signals, three denominators
Argentina's official bulletin index has not listed a national issue newer than BEN 817, which covers epidemiological week 27, 5–11 July. Its quick table reports 51 accumulated 2026 hantavirosis events versus a 2022–2025 median of 34. The year-to-date comparison is above expected, while the latest four-week comparison is below expected. Those are calendar-year surveillance comparisons; they should not be merged with the separate seasonal case series used in earlier Argentine reports. The table does not provide the provincial distribution, strain, exposure setting, deaths or laboratory method behind the 51 events. 2 3
Venezuela remains harder to quantify. Reuters reported on 21 July that the health ministry confirmed three deaths in Anzoátegui. It separately described two deaths of health professionals in Barinas as under investigation and said there was no scientific evidence of person-to-person transmission in Venezuela. The public report gives no confirmed or suspected denominator, illness-onset dates, municipality-level case list, strain, diagnostic method or rodent findings. Three confirmed deaths are therefore a serious signal, but not a usable case-fatality calculation. 4
Chile is not assigned a current count in this briefing because the latest indexed Ministry of Health hantavirus bulletin was not available as a readable primary document. Search snippets are not used as a substitute for the bulletin.
Asia-Pacific and the closed ship event
Health New Zealand's page, updated 22 July, continues to report no human or animal hantavirus case identified in Aotearoa New Zealand, no known person exposed in the country, and low local risk. Australia's National Incident Centre lists the 2026 M/V Hondius passenger repatriation under previous activations, not ongoing activations. Singapore's 7 July parliamentary answer says the cruise-linked outbreak had subsided and that coordinated international action contained further spread. None of these records is a new local case-count report. 8 9 10
WHO's final notice records 13 ship-linked cases, including 12 laboratory-confirmed Andes-virus infections and one probable case, with three deaths. All identified contacts completed the 42-day follow-up period without additional secondary cases, and WHO says the outbreak no longer poses a public-health risk. CDC reported that U.S. monitoring ended without outbreak-related disease among monitored people. CDC's field work in Argentina to trap and test rodents was still aimed at identifying the likely environmental source, so source attribution should not be confused with continuing human transmission. 5 11
Clinical watch: neurological complications can outlast the acute illness
A recent review summarized by CIDRAP in JAMA Neurology describes neurological complications as uncommon but potentially severe across HPS and HFRS. It discusses headache, delirium and seizures in severe HPS; meningitis, encephalitis, visual loss and other neurological complications in HFRS; and possible delayed endocrine problems after pituitary injury. A hospitalized Puumala cohort cited in the review found cerebrospinal-fluid abnormalities in many patients with neurological symptoms, including two cases of sudden visual loss associated with pituitary stroke. The review calls for prospective long-term follow-up. 12
This is a clinical surveillance point, not a new outbreak count. In a patient with suspected HFRS, neurological or visual symptoms may warrant attention beyond the initial febrile and renal presentation. The evidence summarized by CIDRAP is a review of existing knowledge and a research agenda, not a validated triage rule.
Watchpoints for the next briefing
- Ukraine: clinical outcome, species or genotype, exposure location, and any linked cases.
- Argentina: a newer disease-specific bulletin or provincial breakdown that explains the national quick-table total.
- Venezuela: a confirmed and suspected denominator, diagnostic details, onset dates, municipality-level geography and rodent findings; keep the two Barinas deaths outside the confirmed hantavirus count until confirmation.
- Europe and Asia-Pacific: national notifications that add cases or alter the current post-response posture.
- M/V Hondius: ecological or genomic results identifying a source. Such findings would refine attribution, not reopen the transmission event by themselves.
At 08:00 on 27 July 2026, the global assessment is unchanged in its main direction: Ukraine adds a confirmed individual HFRS signal with unresolved exposure, Argentina remains cumulatively above its historical reference without a recent four-week excess, Venezuela remains under-quantified, and the M/V Hondius event remains contained. The most useful operational response is precise case classification and follow-up, not pooling unlike counts into a single global total.
