Three kinds of friction surfaced this week: access, risk, and rigor. On August 18, Replit said Free Mode is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Luna. Replit says everyday tasks in that mode no longer use credits, while Core users can create up to 30 times more than before; those are the company’s own product claims. 1
On August 18, OpenAI said preliminary evidence suggested its upcoming Astra model may meet its Critical cybersecurity capability threshold. OpenAI also said it paused a two-week reinforcement-learning phase, kept its largest planned frontier run on hold, and added stronger workload isolation, network controls, and continuous security testing. These are the company’s own disclosures, not an independent audit. 2
On August 21, Google Research introduced a Biomarker Discovery Framework that combines specialized agents, deterministic statistics, adversarial checks, and human review. Across three cohorts totaling 9,279 participant-observations, the team reports 41 mental-health and 25 metabolic candidate digital biomarkers; the post says the findings are hypothesis-generating and do not establish causality or clinical validation. 3

The signal is not simply more capability. It is the friction layer: who gets to build, when progress must slow, and which evidence survives inspection.
