• On September 3, OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra and began a limited rollout before broader access through ChatGPT plans, the API, Azure, and AWS Bedrock. OpenAI says Astra is its first model to reach the Critical cybersecurity level under its Preparedness Framework. The company describes stronger isolation, checkpoint encryption, full-trajectory monitoring, and blocking evaluations before internal use; it also says monitorability has declined in some adversarial tests, so the safety story is an acknowledged trade-off rather than a clean victory. 1
• On September 2, Google introduced Gemini 3.8 Flash and Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber. Google says the general model targets long-horizon coding and agentic work at an introductory API price of $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens; the Cyber variant is limited to trusted defenders through the Fairwind Program. Google’s reported benchmark results and comparisons are company claims, not independent audits. 2
• A September 1 arXiv preprint from researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign reports a different weak point: the agent harness, the software that assembles prompts, memory, tools, and permissions around a model. The study examined 12 real-world harnesses and describes two attack classes that can move hostile content into higher-privilege or longer-lived context; its authors report 282 vulnerable context sources, with consequences including manipulated tool calls, full agent compromise, and remote code execution. These are preprint findings awaiting the field’s response. 3
