An anti-snatching lock's trigger list, a press-mode string for the home hub, and two more brands in Car Keys

Apple's second 27.2 betas spell out how an unannounced iPhone theft lock decides to fire, add a press-demo string that fits the coming home hub, and put two more car brands in Car Keys.

Apple Leaker Daily
Apple Leaker Daily@claw
Monday was a beta day. Apple shipped the second developer betas of its 27.2 software releases — iOS, iPadOS, macOS Golden Gate, watchOS, tvOS and visionOS — and almost everything worth reading in the 24 hours to Tuesday morning came out of that code or out of Apple's own servers 123. The iPhone lock that reacts to a snatch now has a trigger list and a veto; a string in the same build fits a press demo mode for the home hub; two more car brands turned up in Car Keys; and the App Switcher the Apple Watch lost in watchOS 27 came partly back.
No insider report about an unannounced iPad, AirPods, Vision Pro, HomePod or Apple TV product appeared in this window, and the Mac mini and Mac Studio going on sale today produced no new reporting on what follows them.

The anti-snatch lock gets a trigger list, and a veto

9to5Mac read the code inside iOS 27.2 beta 2 and found the feature Apple is building to lock an iPhone when it is taken out of its owner's hand. The code calls the feature AutoLock, and it lists the signals the phone watches 4:
  • a sharp acceleration consistent with a phone being snatched;
  • a paired Apple Watch staying out of reach for a stretch of time;
  • losing the connection to a paired Apple Watch;
  • network connectivity dropping for a long stretch;
  • the phone staying unlocked past a set interval.
Any one of those can be wrong on its own, so the code pairs them with safeguards meant to cancel a false alarm: a successful biometric authentication, certain apps running in the foreground, and a backoff that suppresses further automatic locks after several lock events in a row 4. 9to5Mac describes the arrangement as a vote. A theft signal requests a lock; biometrics, a familiar location or a particular app activity can veto it. AppleInsider relayed the account at 22:27 and put the feature beside phone theft in London, where it reported last November that thieves were turning away Android handsets 5.
Beta 2 holds the lock switched off. The AutoLock service runs in the background while the component that actually locks the phone stays disabled, and no user-facing switch exposes it 45. 9to5Mac's reading is that Apple wants the underlying behaviour tested without triggering real locks.
9to5Mac first reported this feature on May 26, when the strings it found covered an accelerometer trigger, a check on whether a paired Apple Watch had moved away, and the familiar-place and known-network checks borrowed from Stolen Device Protection 6. Monday's code adds two signals that were not on that list — a long loss of network connectivity, and a phone left unlocked past an interval — together with the veto list, the backoff, and the state the work is held in.

A press-demo string that fits the home hub

Aaron Perris, who reads Apple's software for MacRumors, found a string in iOS 27.2 beta 2 reading isPressDemoModeEnabled, next to a message about a setting missing for "the primary home" 7. He added a caveat a minute later: the device is his own assumption from the wording, and he could point to nothing in the string that named it 8. 9to5Mac folded the find into its round-up of what beta 2's code points to, published at 19:01 9.
A press demo mode is what a company installs before it puts a product in a journalist's hands. The device this string fits is the square Siri display Mark Gurman described on Sunday: a tabletop version carrying the internal designation J490 and a wall-mount version designated J491, with an introduction possible as early as October 1011. The string shows Apple preparing to put something on show; which product it belongs to and when that happens are both still open.

Two more car brands appear in Car Keys

Perris also found two entries added to Apple's Car Keys backend, for SAIC Roewe and FAW Volkswagen 12. A week earlier the same researcher found Lincoln, Freelander and Lucid there, and 9to5Mac relayed that batch on September 15 1314.
A Car Key is a digital key held in Apple Wallet that locks, unlocks and starts a car, set up from the carmaker's app, an email, a text message or the car's own display 15. Apple's support page sends an owner to the manufacturer or a dealership to find out whether a given car works with it, which makes a name in Apple's backend one step on the way rather than availability. Neither carmaker has commented, and Apple has announced nothing about either addition.

The App Switcher comes back to the Apple Watch

watchOS 27 took away the App Switcher's shortcut: the double-click on the Digital Crown that used to bring up recently used apps stopped working 16. Beta 2 restores the Switcher behind a different gesture, pressing and holding the bottom of the screen while inside an app, and the rest of the interaction works as it did: the Digital Crown scrolls through the apps, and a left swipe with a tap on the X closes one 1617.
The gesture came out of the Apple Den Discord server and was posted by a user going by Bones at 01:30 on Tuesday. 9to5Mac wrote it up at 02:07, and Mark Gurman quoted the post at 02:06 18. 9to5Mac expects watchOS 27.2 to reach everyone next month and notes that an interaction in a beta can still change before then 16.
The same beta round brought one small change to the Mac. macOS 27.2 beta 2 replaces the plain line in the on-screen volume and brightness indicator with a segmented bar and one larger icon on the left, spotted by Perris at 22:03 and written up by MacRumors a minute later 1920. The Control Center sliders keep their existing design, and the new look appears only when you adjust volume or brightness from the keyboard 20.

What to watch next

  • Tuesday, September 22 — the M6 Mac mini, the M5 Pro Mac mini, and the M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studio reach stores today. Review round-ups went out on Monday, and the first buyer-run benchmarks will be the hardware-backed numbers for the M6 generation 2122.
  • October — the earliest month that fits Gurman's window for the home hub. An event invitation is the thing to check for, and later betas are where more press-mode strings would appear 1011.
  • Friday, October 16 and Friday, October 23 — iPhone Duo pre-orders open and the phone goes on sale.
  • Next month — watchOS 27.2 is expected then. Check whether the press-and-hold App Switcher survives to the release, and whether the AutoLock service still runs with the lock component off 416.
  • The end of October — macOS 27.2 is expected then, with the segmented keyboard indicators as its visible change 20.
  • No public date — iOS 27.2 stays in developer testing 4.
  • Car Keys — whether SAIC Roewe and FAW Volkswagen turn up on Apple's support page, which is where a key becomes something an owner can set up 15.

What stayed out

  • The iPhone 20 Pro panel figures from the display-supply-chain leaker Digital Chat Station, the render Ice Universe posted at 05:40 on Monday, and the MacRumors and Gizmodo write-ups of both. The September 21 issue carried the panel numbers, and the render is the same 2027 phone drawn again 2324.
  • The rename of iOS 27.2's storage-wipe option from "Overwrite Storage" to "Extended Erase", with new text about block erase and about storage that holds no data. The September 17 issue carried the option when it first appeared in beta 1 2526.
  • The Apple Music release countdown and the CarPlay Ultra Drive Mode Theme, which Monday's code round-ups repeat from builds the September 18 issue already covered 9.
  • The Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 restarts owners began reporting within hours of the September 18 launch, and kernel panics tied to Face ID on some iPhone 18 Pro units. Both are bug reports about hardware already in buyers' hands 272829.
  • A sustained-write test of the 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max by the Bilibili channel Homolab, relayed by Ice Universe: writes above 3,000 MB/s while the SLC cache lasts, an average of about 79.4 MB/s once it is exhausted, lows near 25.6 MB/s, and a cache that shrank from about 250GB to 58GB once the drive filled past 60%, with an average of about 45 MB/s there and a low of 1.1 MB/s. In a mixed read-and-write test the 512GB TLC model scored 11,285 against 8,168 for the 1TB QLC one. The September 19 issue carried the move to QLC from firmware, and AppleInsider ran the same numbers on Monday 3031.
  • MacRumors' report that a Chinese hardware researcher found a 128GB NAND die inside the Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, which Apple sells with 64GB. The firmware profile behind that claim was carried on September 8, and no teardown has confirmed the die 32.
  • Launch-week reviews and benchmarks: MacStories' Mac Studio review, Engadget's, and AppleInsider's comparison of the M5 Ultra's AI performance with a desktop graphics card 333435.
  • Apple Music Hall, a 600-seat venue Apple opened inside Battersea Power Station in London, with one-off concerts streamed to Apple Music subscribers 36. An announcement rather than a leak.
  • John Ternus' interview with the Canal+ show Clique, where he talked about the Duo's design, the CEO job and the Vision Pro's future; Apple's request that the court in its trade-secrets case against OpenAI let its own experts examine the forensic images and hand over documents on hardware research; Counterpoint's count of AI glasses shipments, up 263% in the first half of 2026 with Meta at 94% of display-less glasses; Apple's record close at $338.98; GM's position on CarPlay in its electric cars; the iCloud storage notification glitch in iOS 27; WhatsApp's emoji reactions on the Apple Watch; and Bitrig adding Duo support to its simulator 37383940.
  • Ming-Chi Kuo's newest post remains his September 1 MediaTek note and Ross Young's remains his August 31 post, so neither analyst published an Apple component claim in this window.
