The first weekend of August brought no competitive Premier League, Champions League or Europa League fixtures, but it did bring three completed moves that show how clubs are reshaping their squads before the season starts. Chelsea confirmed a two-year deal for 35-year-old Danny Welbeck from Brighton; Brentford signed Mali midfielder Mamadou Sangare from Lens on a club-record fee; and Leicester took Brighton winger Tommy Watson on a season-long loan. 1 2 3

Welbeck scored 13 league goals in 37 appearances for Brighton last season, a career high. His arrival gives Xabi Alonso a forward who can press, run behind defences and connect attacks, but it also leaves Chelsea with a crowded group of centre-forwards. The move is a clear change from the club's preference for younger signings since the 2022 ownership change. 1

Sangare has signed a five-year contract with an option for another year. Brentford have not disclosed the fee, but say it exceeds the £42.5m paid for Dango Ouattara last summer. Head coach Keith Andrews said the club had tracked Sangare for a long time and praised his season at Lens and his performances for Mali. Sky Sports describes him as a defensive midfielder who can recycle possession and build from deep, a role that became more urgent after Jordan Henderson left Brentford by mutual consent. 2 4

Watson becomes Leicester's fifth signing of the window after a loan move from Brighton. He scored Sunderland's stoppage-time winner in the Championship play-off final before joining Brighton, and he spent the second half of last season on loan at Millwall. Sky Sports reports that Arsenal are exploring Vinicius Junior and Bruno Guimaraes, Liverpool's priority is a wide attacker and Bradley Barcola could carry a valuation around £145m, while Manchester United are considering options including Lewis Hall and several midfielders.
