Apple's latest pre-event evidence points in two different directions. macOS Tahoe 26.7 code gives camera-equipped AirPods a more specific job: identify the screen playing video and help Spatial Audio follow it. Separately, Mark Gurman's August 31 report says Phil Schiller is stepping away from running the App Store and Apple's product events. The first is a product-architecture clue. Camera-equipped AirPods add screen tracking

A MacRumors forum post by the user Mactracker describes new findings in the second macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate. The unreleased AirPods are identified in the code as B790. The code suggests that the earbuds could recognize the physical display the wearer is watching, then use that information to improve head-tracked Spatial Audio. 1

The code names five display types: laptop, monitor, smartphone, tablet, and television. When several displays are in view, the AirPods could compare the display direction with motion-sensor data and select the screen that best matches the wearer's head position. The screen-detection path appears to activate during video playback. The code also describes pauses when movement makes the screen position unreliable. 1

The relationship with Face ID makes the design more specific. Apple's Face ID sensors already help estimate head position on compatible devices. When camera-equipped AirPods are present, the code reportedly gives their camera input priority for this screen-detection task. MacRumors also found a server-based visual-reasoning identifier, com.apple.fm.language.instruct_server_v1.audio_accessory_visual_reasoning, which connects the AirPods camera path to Visual Intelligence requests. 1 2

This follow-up changes the product question from "Can the AirPods see the world?" to "What does Apple want the cameras to do during ordinary media use?" The code points to a concrete interaction: the earbuds can determine which display is playing the video and keep the sound field aligned with that display. The code also leaves the final camera hardware, privacy behavior, product name, and shipping date open. MacRumors continues to place the camera-equipped AirPods on a fall 2027 rumor track. 2

The evidence level is therefore split. The screen-detection behavior has a concrete code trail and a detailed source post. The connection between B790 code and a retail product remains a roadmap inference. A later software build, hardware demonstration, or Apple product page would need to carry the claim from development evidence into a shipping plan.

Phil Schiller steps away from App Store and events

Mark Gurman reported on August 31 that Phil Schiller is stepping down from running the App Store and Apple's product launch events. Gurman's X post identifies the change as part of Apple's leadership transition and links to his Bloomberg report. Schiller is expected to remain at Apple as an Apple Fellow while working on unspecified projects. 3

An accessible account from Thurrott adds that Apple's services division, led by Eddy Cue, will oversee the App Store. The report also says employees view Schiller's change as a step toward his eventual retirement, while Apple declined to comment. 4

The product-leak relevance is narrower than the AirPods finding. Schiller's departure changes who owns two visible parts of Apple's public product machine: the App Store and launch events. The report supplies no new iPhone, Apple Watch, or software feature. It does place the September 9 event in a different leadership context, since Apple is entering John Ternus's CEO era while Schiller reduces his operating role.
