Precipice Loop — Acadia’s rung-and-cliff classic

Current status first: Precipice Trail and its parking lot are closed until further notice for peregrine falcon nesting; treat this as a saved-for-reopening plan, not a hike to start today. 1

Trail DNA: The loop is 3.2 miles round trip, rises over 1,000 feet in 0.9 miles, and uses granite ledges, iron rungs, ladders, and open cliff faces on the way to Champlain Mountain views. NPS lists pets as not allowed and warns against this route for small children, wet weather, or anyone uncomfortable with heights. 2

Best target window: Aim for fall after NPS posts the seasonal reopening: cooler rock, lower humidity, and better color over Frenchman Bay. Before committing, re-check the conditions page the morning you go. 1

Trailhead + fees: The Precipice Trailhead is on the Park Loop Road, about 1.5 miles past Sieur de Monts Spring, and NPS notes there is no public transportation to this trailhead. Acadia requires an entrance pass year-round; the standard pass range is $20–$35, and Cadillac Summit Road vehicle reservations do not apply to other park areas. 23

Camping plan: Book Acadia campsites in advance through Recreation.gov; NPS does not allow backcountry camping, out-of-bounds camping, overnight parking, or winter camping in the park. 4
