The Full Time Report — Episode 132: A First Night, and an Old Lesson

Bournemouth have been a football club since eighteen ninety-nine, and until last night they had never played a match in Europe. They won it.

Bournemouth have been a football club since 1899 and had never played a match in Europe until Thursday night. They won it, away at Real Sociedad. Crystal Palace won 4-0 on their Europa League debut, Manchester City's 17-year-old debutant scored twice, and Celtic lost again at home. Here is what happened, and what it means.

Thursday's results

Europa League, league phase, first matchday
  • Real Sociedad 1–2 Bournemouth. Justin Kluivert scored Bournemouth's first European goal, 10 minutes 43 seconds in; Rayan headed the second. Sergio Gómez pulled one back on 57 minutes. 1
  • Celtic 1–3 Ferencváros. Bamidele Yusuf, Kristoffer Zachariassen and Daniel Arzani scored for the visitors; Mika Baur had equalised. 2
  • Crystal Palace 4–0 Lech Poznań. Yéremy Pino, Chris Richards, Jørgen Strand Larsen (penalty) and Eddie Nketiah. Lech's Radoslaw Murawski was sent off late. 3
  • Juventus 5–0 NEC Nijmegen. Two errors by the NEC goalkeeper, Nikolas Polster, were punished by Nicolás González and Randal Kolo Muani; Kerim Alajbegovic, Nick Woltemade (penalty) and Zeki Celik scored the others. 2
  • Beşiktaş 4–1 Marseille, with three unanswered goals in the second half. OFI Crete 2–0 Hoffenheim. Levski Sofia 0–1 Red Bull Salzburg. Viktoria Plzeň 0–3 Union Saint-Gilloise. Lillestrøm 1–2 Torreense. 24
Carabao Cup, third round
  • Manchester City 5–0 Norwich City. Floyd Samba scored twice on his City debut; Rayan Cherki, Allan and Ryan McAidoo scored the others. 5

Bournemouth, 127 years and 10 minutes

Evanilson turned and released Adrien Truffert, whose cross was bent behind the last defender for Justin Kluivert to finish. The assistant's flag went up, the video assistant referee overruled it, and the 2,000 travelling supporters celebrated the club's first European goal twice. Ten minutes later Alex Scott, the best player on the pitch, curled a long ball in behind and Rayan headed Bournemouth's second. 1
At Real Sociedad's ground, one flare is set off when the visitors score and two when the home team do, a tradition from the old Atotxa ground recovered at the Anoeta, so that boats out on the Bay of Biscay can read the score. Sergio Gómez made it 2–1 on 57 minutes with a cross that bent all the way in at the far post, and from then on Bournemouth were hanging on. They have lost a lead five times in six games this season — against Manchester City, Everton, Newcastle and Brentford, most of them late. 1
Djordje Petrovic saved twice from Orri Óskarsson in the closing minutes, the second from about five yards, to protect the win. Andoni Iraola, who managed Bournemouth into the competition and is now Liverpool's manager, returns to the south coast with Liverpool on Sunday. 16

Celtic's European lesson

Martin O'Neill's side crossed the ball well and did not finish it; Ferencváros' first proper attempt went in. Mika Baur equalised just before half-time, but Kristoffer Zachariassen restored the lead early in the second half and Daniel Arzani, a former Celtic player, finished it from distance. 2
O'Neill called it "a European lesson for us in many aspects" and "psychologically quite damning", said he had seven matches left to get points on the board, and turned his attention to Sunday. 2
The context is what makes it worse. Celtic went out of the Champions League qualifiers to LASK in August having led that tie by four goals at one point. Rangers beat them 3–0 in the League Cup last weekend. The Old Firm is at Celtic Park on Sunday. 2

Palace's four-goal relief

Lech Poznań gifted Palace the first goal, Terry Yegbe's throw-in going straight to Yéremy Pino, who scored. Chris Richards headed in a deep corner from Adam Wharton, Jørgen Strand Larsen converted a penalty after Pino was brought down, and Eddie Nketiah finished the fourth from the bench. 3
Pierre Sage, who replaced Oliver Glasner after Glasner won three trophies in twelve months, had been under some pressure: Palace have conceded 11 goals in their first four league games and lost at home to Ipswich on Saturday. Captain Dean Henderson signed a contract extension on Wednesday and asked supporters to "park the negativity". Palace play Sage's former club, Lyon, next month. 3

Samba, 17, and City's sixth win

Floyd Samba scored twice on his Manchester City debut, the first a header after Norwich goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw fumbled Nico O'Reilly's cross. Rayan Cherki, Allan — also on debut — and Ryan McAidoo completed a 5–0 win that was City's sixth in six under Enzo Maresca. 5
Samba's brother Tyrone is in the academy and his father, Christopher, played for Blackburn and QPR. Norwich's manager, Philippe Clement, put it plainly: "Six shots on target, five goals." City face Brighton at home in the fourth round in October. 5

Around Europe

Juventus' 5–0 win over NEC Nijmegen turned on two errors by goalkeeper Nikolas Polster: he lost the ball to Nicolás González for the first goal, and failed to clear for Randal Kolo Muani to roll in the fifth. Marseille's poor start continued with a 4–1 defeat at Beşiktaş, three of the goals coming in the second half. 2
The rest of the round: OFI Crete 2–0 Hoffenheim, Levski Sofia 0–1 Red Bull Salzburg, Viktoria Plzeň 0–3 Union Saint-Gilloise, Lillestrøm 1–2 Torreense. 4

What is on this weekend

Brentford v Chelsea is tonight, 20:00. Chelsea have not won at Brentford since October 2021 and every visit since has been drawn; Nathan Collins is missing at centre-back, and Kevin Schade, who scored twice at Bournemouth, will be up against the 20-year-old Jannik Schuster. João Pedro is a fitness doubt and Danny Welbeck may get his first league start. 67
Saturday: Tottenham v Aston Villa (17th against 19th, one league goal between them), Brighton v Arsenal, Everton v Ipswich, Newcastle v Hull and Nottingham Forest v Coventry. Sunday: Bournemouth v Liverpool, Leeds v Crystal Palace, Manchester City v Sunderland and Fulham v Manchester United. 6

England, and the transfer desk

Thomas Tuchel names his England squad on Friday for the opening Nations League fixtures — Spain at home, Czechia home and away, and Croatia away. He is expected to be without John Stones, Dan Burn, Djed Spence and Jordan Henderson through injury, with Cole Palmer and Phil Foden among those pushing for recalls. 8
Friday's transfer gossip, with each item attributed to the outlet that reported it: Arsenal are extremely keen on Bournemouth's Eli Junior Kroupi, 20, but Bournemouth would want a huge fee (Football London); Chelsea are exploring a £69m deal for Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams (Fichajes); Real Madrid are weighing up a move for Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite (Goal) and have made fresh enquiries about the 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan (Teamtalk); Liverpool would have to pay the full £130m release clause for Bournemouth's Rayan (ESPN Brazil via Caught Offside); Arsenal will not sell Martin Zubimendi in January (Football Insider); Everton are unlikely to return for Richarlison (Football Insider); and Julián Álvarez is considering a change of agent (Mundo Deportivo). 9
Real Madrid are also leading the race to sign JJ Gabriel, the 15-year-old who asked Manchester United to cancel his registration, with Barcelona and Bayern Munich among the admirers and an Irish passport through his father smoothing a move to Europe. He would have been called up for Wednesday's cup tie with Brighton and would have become United's youngest player had he featured. 10
