Apple leaks, August 8, 2026: camera-equipped AirPods enter the September watch window

The strongest Apple leak in the August 7–8 window is a timing change for camera-equipped AirPods: fresh MacRumors and 9to5Mac reports put a B790 variant on the September watch list. The important qualifier is that both pages trace the claim to Mark Gurman’s August 2 Bloomberg newsletter. This is fresh coverage of a primary report, not independent corroboration.

MacRumors reported on August 7 that AirPods with cameras could be unveiled as soon as September, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models and the rumored foldable iPhone. The report describes two tiny infrared cameras, one in each earbud, plus an indicator light for when the sensors are active. Their reported job is to feed Visual Intelligence and Siri, so a wearer could ask about an object or text in view. 1

The name "AirPods Ultra" is still a report nickname, not a confirmed Apple product name. The same report says Apple may be considering the Ultra branding because camera hardware would put the earbuds above the $249 AirPods Pro 3. 1

The underlying distinction is between two internal projects. In his August 2 Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman wrote that B798, the camera-AirPods project previously expected in 2026, had been pushed to 2027. A separate B790 version appears further along: references have surfaced in iOS 27 code, and Gurman says it is on Apple’s internal roadmap for a debut as early as this year. 2

That is why the September possibility is not necessarily a reversal of the earlier 2027 report. Apple may be testing two versions at different stages. The accessible 9to5Mac relay of Gurman’s note makes the same split: B798 remains a 2027 product, while B790 could appear as soon as September. It also says the differences between the two versions are not known, and that neither version is guaranteed to reach the market. 3

The August 7 coverage does add one useful piece of information: a nearer launch window for B790. It does not add a new supplier report, a regulatory filing, a retail listing, or a fresh post from Gurman. 9to5Mac’s same-day article also traces the fall launch claim to Gurman and frames the feature around hands-free Visual Intelligence, including possible accessibility value for VoiceOver users. 4

The table’s main warning is easy to miss: MacRumors and 9to5Mac are corroborating the existence of the same report, not independently confirming the September date. Gurman is a credible Apple reporter — Bloomberg identifies him as its managing editor of consumer technology and chief correspondent for Apple and consumer hardware — but an internal target can still slip or be cancelled. 2

Three unknowns remain.

First, "as early as this year" is not the same as a locked September launch. The language describes an earliest target, not a confirmed event plan. MacRumors says the earbuds could be unveiled alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, but it does not cite an Apple event invitation or a product listing. 1

Second, the product identity is still unsettled. The July iOS 27 code report described B790 as able to relay "two images from cameras on either side of [a] user’s head." The code showed a camera-aware wearable and examples for landmarks, text and known objects, but it did not identify the final hardware. The AirPods interpretation became more credible after Gurman tied B790 to the project, not because the original code alone proved it. 5

Third, the reported camera function is narrower than the phrase "camera AirPods" may suggest. The reports describe the sensors as eyes for Siri and Visual Intelligence, not as a conventional photo or video system. There is no sourced claim here that users will frame, save or share pictures from the earbuds. 1

The next meaningful confirmation would be a later beta with B790-specific behavior, a regulatory or retail record tied to the hardware, or an Apple event announcement that names the product. Another article repeating the September date would add little.

A separate August 7 report from 9to5Mac says Fixed Focus Digital posted on Weibo that "rumors are circulating" about an iPhone 17 price increase on August 10. The post itself does not name a source, amount, affected models or market. 6

This belongs on a watch list, not beside the AirPods lead. 9to5Mac notes that Fixed Focus Digital has been well connected, but also says there is no direct source beyond the leaker’s wording. Until Apple’s store pages change or another credible report supplies the amount and scope, the claim is low confidence. 7

Today’s useful update is specific: a B790 camera-AirPods variant may have moved into Apple’s September planning window, while the older B798 project remains associated with 2027. The evidence is strong enough to watch the next iPhone event more closely, but not strong enough to call an AirPods announcement certain. The fresh coverage improves the timing case; it does not provide independent confirmation of the launch.
