Wizards' top seat goes to its own D&D boss, SPIEL fills every hall it has, and DECKO lets you delete a card every round

Dan Ayoub is promoted to president of Wizards of the Coast from inside the building, SPIEL Essen closes sold out with 2,012 new releases and no hall left to open, Asmodee publishes its accessibility guidelines as a public hub, and DECKO's designer explains why a card leaves your deck every round.

SPIEL Essen closed on Sunday 25 October, and this desk covers the three days after it: 26 to 28 October 2026. BoardGameWire, the trade site this desk checks first, has filed nothing since 19 October, so the business reporting below comes from Hasbro's own release, ICv2, Rascal and the German trade press.
The week's biggest move is a promotion. The fair published the numbers on its record year. Asmodee put its accessibility standard on a public website. Then a deckbuilder diary and eleven playings of a Stefan Feld game.

Wizards' top seat goes to the D&D boss already inside the building

Hasbro named Dan Ayoub president of Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games on 27 October, effective 2 November. 1
The seat had been open since John Hight stepped down in July 2026. Chris Cocks, Hasbro's chief executive, held the role in the interim. 2
Ayoub runs Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, Duel Masters and Hasbro Digital Games, which covers Exodus and Warlock. 1 He is the first internal candidate promoted into the job, chosen from a search that evaluated dozens of internal and external candidates. 1

His route in was digital. Ayoub joined Wizards in 2022 to run its digital studios, moved to senior vice president of D&D, and before that spent 25 years making video games, eleven of them at Microsoft, including as studio head at Halo's 343 Industries. 1 The release also notes that he has played D&D with the same group since he was ten. 1
Cocks framed the promotion around staff. "His promotion reflects one of my top priorities: developing our people." 1 Ayoub's own statement promises to "put fans first, respect the artists and creators who make these worlds come alive". 1
That line meets a hard test. Rascal reports that the D&D, Magic and Duel Masters teams are waiting on a union election after leadership refused voluntary recognition in October, and that Ayoub has not commented on the campaign. 3 Rascal's reading of the post is worth keeping: Cocks took the seat in 2016 to push commercial growth, and the two presidents after him were video game executives, so an internal hire signals something different. 3

SPIEL Essen sold out every hall it has

The fair's own closing figures: 230,000 visitors across 22 to 25 October, 10,000 more than last year's record, with all four days sold out. 4
Exhibitors rose from 948 to 997. 4 Opening Hall 8 took the exhibition area to 81,200 square metres, which means all eight halls of the Messe Essen site are now in use. 4 The 997 came from 53 countries. 5

The release count went up too. The show listed 2,012 new titles, against 1,700 a year earlier; 1,885 had been reported when the fair opened, and the tally kept rising until the doors shut. 45
Messe Essen's managing director Carol Rapp said in the closing release that the show now uses the site completely, and that the fair will stay in Essen. 5 Merz Verlag's Florian Hess pointed the growth instead at the group's year-round portfolio, which includes the Nuremberg toy fair and the Game Inventors Convention. 5 Next year runs 21 to 24 October. 5
Put those numbers together and the constraint on a debut is physical: 2,012 titles across eight halls that are all full.

Asmodee publishes its accessibility standard as a website

Asmodee opened a public hub for its access+ programme on 27 October, at asmodeeaccess.com. 6 The programme began in 2022 with an in-house studio for players with cognitive disabilities, and its guidelines now steer how Asmodee's studios build games. 6

The hub lists games with their accessibility features, alongside print-and-play files and a resources section. 7 Each game entry names the cognitive skills it engages: Dobble Giant selective attention and inhibition control, Just One flexibility and perspective-taking. 7 Game guides with practical recommendations are listed and marked coming soon. 7
The site describes the method as accessibility by design: features built into a game plus add-ons, developed with researchers, healthcare professionals and educators. 7 Arianna Ryan, Asmodee's chief people officer, said the aim is to make accessibility "a shared practice that drives change across our industry". 6
For anyone pitching to Asmodee, the vocabulary now sits in public: selective attention, inhibition control, perspective-taking, written language. The adaptations are checkable at the same address.

DECKO: an express deckbuilder that lets you delete a card every round

Haakon Gaarder's diary for DECKO, published on BoardGameGeek on 27 October, starts with Balatro. He liked the multiplying numbers and the poker slot machine, and wanted something closer to real poker with the betting and bluffing intact. 8
The first build was deliberately crude, played in Tabletop Simulator with an ordinary deck in the middle to buy from and a small starting deck. Each round was a poker hand and then a purchase. 8 His verdict on it: too random, too linear, no spikes, and the deckbuilding took too long to show. 8
Two fixes did the structural work. Minimum bets rise every round, so the stakes climb in step with improving decks. Starting decks were cut to as weak as he could make them, which puts the deckbuilding in the foreground. 8
Then the change worth stealing: players can remove a card every round. 8 Gaarder notes that most deckbuilders allow very little of it, and he puts that down to the problem it creates: one player ends up with a consistently best deck. 8 DECKO embraces that instead. The race is to 60 chips, and the game ends around the moment a player becomes unbeatable. 8
Balancing followed from that speed. Low cards got the strongest powers, because you start with none of the high ones; the twos carry a Crypto effect that pays exponentially more chips. 8 The aces needed help too, since you rarely draw more than one, so the Assisting Aces adjust the numbers of the cards next to them. 8

The Druids of Edora after eleven games: deep decisions, slow turns

W. Eric Martin has played Stefan Feld's The Druids of Edora eleven times, and wrote up where it holds and where it does not on 26 October. 9 The game came out of alea, Ravensburger's strategy line, at SPIEL Essen 2025, and it is the first Feld design for alea since The Castles of Tuscany in 2020. 9
The skeleton is simple. Each player holds thirteen dice, so the game runs about thirteen rounds, and each turn you walk to a shrine, take one action and cover it with a die. 10
A game board of forest clearings linked by paths, each clearing holding two to four action icons with coloured dice placed on them, player boards down the right
The Druids of Edora at the end of a game: the shrines each carry two to four actions at four players, and every die placed both takes an action and works the board around it. Image: Board Game Beat
Each die then does four jobs. It surrounds bonfires for small bonuses, it extends a chain of dice linking two like-coloured dolmen for points, it wins a couple of points for owning the highest die at a shrine, and it helps claim runestones and menhirs for final scoring. 9 The board puts two to four actions on each shrine depending on player count. 9
The pressure valve is one of the eight actions: take three dice from the reserve or twelve provisions. 10 Martin calls it the game's weak spot and its escape hatch at once. Take it and you lose tempo; skip it and you run dry, so you spend turns routing through shrines to collect dice as a side effect. 10
His real complaint is turn time. Each die folds several actions together, so one good turn takes arithmetic, and he would rather think through most of a problem and move. 10 Eleven games in, the player at his table who does calculate is still beating him by twenty points. 10
The teaching load sits at the same seam: eight actions, twelve herb modifiers, fifteen endgame bonuses and eighteen one-time spells. 10 Multi-purpose pieces buy depth and charge the table for it, and this game charges in minutes per turn.

Deception comes back with a heist and nearly funds on day one

Grey Fox Games opened Deception: Heist in Hong Kong on Kickstarter on 27 October, and the campaign stood at $14,959 of a $14,999 goal from 317 backers the same day, running to 20 November. 11 Tobey Ho designed it, as he did the 2014 original. 11
It is a standalone game. The crime changes from murder to a series of thefts, with the culprit sitting among the investigators, and the machinery stays: deduction, hidden roles and restricted communication. 11
The detail to note is card compatibility. Grey Fox says the key evidence cards of both games can be mixed, which turns an old box on a shelf into an argument for the new one. 11 The family has also shifted younger and quicker: ages 12 and up instead of 14, and 15 to 30 minutes instead of 20. 11

The week's other live campaign is closing. Excursions, Ben Rosset's lighter return to the Galactic Cruise universe, stood at $537,746 pledged against a $30,000 goal from 4,869 backers with 61 hours left when checked on 28 October. 12 Its board-game weight of 3.17 against 3.98 for Galactic Cruise backs the lighter reading, on 60 to 90 minutes instead of 90 to 150. 13 It ends on 30 October. 12

What to do with this desk

Ask about the slate before you ask about the slot. A show that fills eight halls with 2,012 releases has room for a debut only where a publisher has already made room on its slate.
Watch the vocabulary Asmodee just published. If a pitch can name the cognitive load it removes, it arrives at that publisher in the language its guidelines already use.
Test the removal rule. A card out of the deck every round made a whole design work for Gaarder, and it is one rule you can try at your next playtest.
