The Full Time Report — Episode 115: Comebacks, control, and transfer status

Sunday gave us four Premier League games and seventeen goals, but the score count isn't really the story. The better question is what changed inside those matches. Chelsea were three up and then had to hang on. Ipswich led at Old Trafford and then the whole game moved in Bruno Fernandes's direction. Leeds were second best for an hour and still found a point. And Sunderland won a tight game because one late chance finally stayed on its feet.

The Full Time Report — Episode 115

Sunday's four Premier League matches produced seventeen goals, but the most useful way to read the day is not simply to count them. Chelsea were three goals up and then had to survive Brighton's comeback; Manchester United turned a difficult opening hour into a five-two win; Leeds recovered from being second best; and Sunderland found a late winner in a game Fulham never really entered. 1234
The episode follows the moments that changed those matches: Chelsea's fast start and Brighton's response, Bruno Fernandes' hat-trick after Ipswich led, Dominic Calvert-Lewin's first goal of the season, and Wilson Isidor's 75th-minute winner. The manager reactions matter too, especially Michael Carrick's praise for United's mentality and Álvaro Arbeloa's unusually blunt assessment of Fulham's attitude. 5

The Sunday scoreline

Chelsea's four-three win over Brighton was the day's wildest match. Romeo Lavia scored his first Chelsea goal, Pedro Neto made it two, and João Pedro added a third before half-time. Brighton's Malick Yalcouye pulled one back, Pascal Groß reduced the gap again after the break, and Cole Palmer's individual finish looked like the answer. Groß headed a third for Brighton in the final action, but Chelsea held on. 1
Manchester United beat Ipswich five-two at Old Trafford. Leif Davis put Ipswich ahead, but Bruno Fernandes equalised after Marcelino Núñez slipped. Jacob Greaves then scored an own goal and conceded a penalty within two minutes and forty-five seconds, with Fernandes converting the spot-kick. Fernandes completed his hat-trick, and Bryan Mbeumo added a fifth before Ipswich's late consolation. 2
Leeds drew one-one with Brentford after Kevin Schade's first-half flick and Dominic Calvert-Lewin's close-range equaliser. Brentford controlled the first half, but Leeds grew into the match and finished with the stronger push. Fulham, meanwhile, had 58.4 percent possession against Sunderland without producing a shot on target. Wilson Isidor came off the bench and scored in the 75th minute, giving Sunderland their first league win of the season. 34

What actually turned

The Chelsea match is a reminder that a comfortable score can hide an uncomfortable game. Chelsea's first half was built on width, pace and Brighton errors. João Pedro, Morgan Rogers and the wing-backs kept moving Brighton's back line until Chelsea were three up. Then Brighton changed the feel of the match. Yalcouye was involved in the first two goals, Groß kept finding dangerous positions, and Chelsea spent the final minutes protecting one goal rather than chasing another.
The good news for Xabi Alonso is that the attack has enough quality to create a cushion quickly. The question is whether the team can control a match after that cushion exists. Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler's reading was that Chelsea had too much quality to punish mistakes. That is praise of a sort, but it also tells Alonso where the next test is: better teams will punish the space Chelsea left when the game opened up. 1
Emiliano Martínez made his Chelsea debut less than four hours after his £7.5 million move from Aston Villa was confirmed. He made a sharp save from Diego Gómez and stopped Brighton from drawing level, although two of the goals came after saves had fallen kindly for the visitors. BBC Sport also recorded Unai Emery's view that the Chelsea and Villa relationship is not friendship but business: “They want to kill us and we want to kill them.” That line fits the intensity of the exchange, even if it does not settle anything about the clubs' financial dealings. 67
At Old Trafford, Ipswich had the first plan and Manchester United had the better response. The visitors' opener came after Abdul Fatawu beat Luke Shaw on the wing and Leif Davis finished the move. United did not immediately look settled. Then one slip changed the match, and two minutes and forty-five seconds later the own goal and penalty put United ahead.
That second goal also created the day's refereeing argument. Harry Maguire's arms were involved in the build-up, but Jacob Greaves was the player who scored the own goal. Under the law as it was applied, the goal stood. Gary O'Neil said it did not feel like a goal, while also accepting the decision. The important football point is that Ipswich went from controlling the afternoon to chasing it in a very short space of time.
Bruno Fernandes took over from there. His penalty was not a trivial detail because he had missed two in pre-season. His third goal completed a hat-trick in a week when he had also collected the PFA Players' Player of the Year award. Michael Carrick said the bigger satisfaction was the mentality after last week's defeat. Luke Shaw went further and named Kobbie Mainoo as his man of the match, even with Fernandes scoring three. 25
Leeds and Brentford turned on a smaller scale. Brentford were clearly the better side before the interval, and Kevin Schade's flick reflected the way they attacked the spaces around Leeds. Daniel Farke's team did not panic. They defended the next phase, waited for the crowd to lift, and gradually made Brentford defend deeper. Calvert-Lewin's finish from Lukas Nmecha's cross was simple, which is exactly why it mattered. It changed the game from Brentford trying to finish Leeds off into Brentford trying to keep hold of a point.
James Trafford was named player of the match after keeping out Igor Thiago's header. That is the shape of Leeds' point: not a performance they will want to repeat for an hour, but a recovery they will be happy to remember. Brentford's lesson is harsher. Dominance without a second goal leaves the door open, and Leeds eventually walked through it. 3
Sunderland's win was less open but just as revealing. Granit Xhaka's passing and leadership gave the home side a platform, and the defence stayed organised when Fulham had possession. Isidor had already hit the post before Habib Diarra's low cross gave him the winning chance. Bernd Leno could not gather it, and Isidor finished.
Régis Le Bris said Sunderland were happy to be back at home and praised the way the players managed Fulham's threat. Arbeloa saw a different problem. He said Fulham did not fight, did not run and were not in the game. Those comments are not a tactical explanation; they are a manager challenging his team's basic level. After two league defeats, that is the issue Fulham must answer before the next round. 4

Europe gets a calendar

There was no Champions League or Europa League match to recap from Sunday, but the European picture is now concrete. UEFA lists the Champions League league phase from 8 to 10 September, with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United among the English clubs. The Europa League begins on 16 and 17 September. Sunderland open at home to AZ Alkmaar on 16 September, while Crystal Palace host Lech Poznań and Bournemouth travel to Real Sociedad on 17 September. 89
That matters for Sunday's results because Sunderland's clean-sheet win now sits beside eight extra Europa League fixtures, and Chelsea's new goalkeeper has very little time to settle before the league schedule tightens. A draw is no longer just a list of opponents. It is a travel plan, a Thursday night, and the next Sunday waiting behind it.

Deadline-day labels

The transfer window is moving quickly, so the useful question is not simply whether a player is “close.” It is what has actually happened.
Emiliano Martínez is the completed move in this episode. BBC Sport reported that the Argentine goalkeeper joined Chelsea from Aston Villa for £7.5 million, and he started against Brighton that same day. That is the clearest possible status: the transfer happened, the player was available, and the match gave us an immediate first impression. 6
The Monday gossip column carries several weaker stages. Tottenham have enquired about Christian Pulisic at AC Milan. Everton are working on a second loan deal for Jack Grealish. Crystal Palace want to keep Dean Henderson after a Nottingham Forest bid. Liverpool and Everton are interested in Stuttgart's Jamie Leweling, while Newcastle are exploring Matías Fernández-Pardo but negotiations are not advanced. The wording matters: enquiry, work in progress, bid and interest are not agreements. 10
There are also stories with a little more shape. Crystal Palace and Fulham are in talks over Hugo Larsson, with a possible fee reported. Palace have revived talks for Quinten Timber. Juventus are still considering Joshua Zirkzee, but that depends on what happens with Jonathan David. None of those reports should be read as a completed signing.
The same discipline applies to Sunday's games. Martínez was in Chelsea's goal because his move had been completed. Henderson was still a Palace player while Forest's bid was being discussed. The player on the pitch is a fact about the match. The rumour around the player is a separate fact about the window. Keeping those two things apart is how you avoid turning deadline day into one long, blurry “almost.”

The bit to keep

Sunday did not give every team a new identity. It gave them evidence. Chelsea can start brilliantly but still have to learn how to close a game. Manchester United can absorb a setback when Fernandes and Mainoo take control. Leeds can turn a poor first half into a point, while Brentford will wonder why one goal was allowed to carry so much weight. Sunderland have the defensive platform for a busy season, and Fulham have been told plainly that possession is not the same as competitiveness.
And around all of that, the transfer window is asking for careful language. Completed is completed. An agreed fee still leaves a medical or paperwork step. Talks are talks. A bid is a bid. Sunday's football was loud enough without pretending every rumour had already arrived.
