Apple Leaks Digest — July 20, 2026: Live Notes pilot, Mac Pro's abandoned Extreme path

The last 24 hours produced a narrow but useful Apple leak cluster from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman: an opt-in AI note-taking pilot at the Genius Bar, plus new detail on Mac Pro hardware that Apple developed and abandoned. Both claims trace back to Gurman's July 19 Power On newsletter; MacRumors and 9to5Mac provide readable follow-ups, not independent confirmation. Gurman is Bloomberg's managing editor of consumer technology and its chief correspondent for Apple and consumer hardware, which gives this report more weight than an unattributed repost. 1

Some Apple retail stores are reportedly piloting Live Notes, a system that uses AI to record, transcribe, and summarize conversations between Genius Bar employees and customers. The transcript is then added to the employee's iPad and Apple's internal repair-session record, with the stated goal of reducing note-taking so employees can focus more on the customer. 12

The privacy and workplace limits are as important as the AI feature itself. Both the employee and the customer must agree before a session is recorded. Gurman says Apple has indicated that the recordings themselves will not be saved, managers will not receive the transcripts, and employees can edit the transcript and summary before saving them. Some retail employees are nevertheless concerned that the system could eventually be used for coaching or performance reviews. 1

Apple has not announced Live Notes as a customer-facing feature, and it is unclear whether the pilot will expand, become mandatory, or change how the saved material is used. The useful read-through is narrower: Apple is testing generative AI inside a real service workflow, but this is not evidence that a new Genius Bar product or a broad retail rollout is imminent.

The existence and mechanics of the test come from a named Gurman report and are consistent across Bloomberg's account and two readable follow-ups. The open questions are about scale and permanence, not whether the experiment has been reported. 3

Gurman says Apple developed both M2 Extreme and M3 Extreme chips before ending the projects over cost and demand concerns. The proposed tier would have offered roughly twice the CPU and GPU cores of Apple's Ultra chips. That is a report about canceled development, not a sign that an Extreme chip is returning. 14

The more concrete hardware details are two unreleased Mac Pro models. Gurman identifies J170 as an Intel-powered Mac Pro intended for specific use cases, even while Apple was transitioning to its own silicon. J190 was an M3 Ultra Mac Pro planned to launch alongside the M3 Ultra Mac Studio in early 2025. Neither model reached customers, and Apple discontinued the Mac Pro in March. 5

That history explains why the Mac Pro story should be graded as a post-mortem rather than a roadmap leak. Apple's design teams explored a higher-performance tier and even a special-purpose Intel configuration, but the economics did not justify shipping them. Gurman does not expect Apple to bring the Mac Pro back anytime soon, if ever. 1

This is unusually specific insider reporting, with product codenames and a clear reason given for the cancellations. It still describes internal plans rather than products Apple has confirmed, and the report offers no evidence of a revived Mac Pro project. The strongest conclusion is that Apple's current high-end desktop strategy favors Mac Studio over a separate Mac Pro tier.

Today's strongest signal is about Apple's operating model, not a new device: Live Notes suggests the company is testing AI where it can remove routine work, while keeping participation and transcript handling tightly controlled for now. The Mac Pro material is valuable context on what Apple considered before choosing a simpler desktop lineup, but it should not be read as a comeback rumor.
