The Full Time Report — Episode 118: The Window Is Shut. Now the Test Begins. (2026)

The transfer window is shut, so the useful question has changed. Which clubs have built a plan that can survive the season rather than simply win a deadline-day headline?

No covered fixtures

There were no Premier League, men's Champions League or Europa League matches on Wednesday 2 September. The BBC's dated scores page does list women's Champions League qualifying and fixtures in other competitions, but none of those three men's competitions produced a result for this briefing. 1

Arsenal remain the benchmark

Arsenal opened the league season with two wins and also beat Manchester City in the Community Shield. BBC Sport's Phil McNulty judged the champions to be the team to beat, even though the club did not land Julián Alvarez. Bruno Guimarães, Ezri Konsa and Christos Tzolis add quality in midfield, defence and wide areas, leaving Arsenal with one focused question: where does the next goal come from when a tight match needs a new route? 2

Villa have bought time with change

Aston Villa's third Unai Emery era begins after a summer of major departures and arrivals. The club lowered the squad's average age and reduced its wage bill, while Nicolas Jackson joined from Chelsea for a reported £65m. BBC Sport's assessment is that Villa may have a more sustainable squad, but Emery needs patience while a large group of new players learn his methods. 3

Liverpool have the attacking ceiling and defensive questions

Liverpool spent more than £200m according to BBC Sport's window assessment, with Bradley Barcola arriving from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported £123m. The club also lost Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konaté on free transfers, while injuries and unsettled full-back positions have exposed the need for defensive depth. Liverpool's Champions League campaign begins on 10 September, which will test the squad quickly. 4

Everton are left explaining the gaps

Everton did bring in Jack Grealish on loan, but Folarin Balogun's move from Monaco collapsed after medical and renegotiation problems. The Everton Fans' Forum told Reuters that supporters had been promised a more structured recruitment process and deserved an explanation for the missed targets and departures without suitable replacements. Reuters reported that Everton had not responded at publication time. 5

One more Spurs condition

Richarlison could still leave Tottenham for Trabzonspor because the Turkish transfer window closes on Friday night. The Guardian reported that the striker has asked to leave, has refused a return to Everton and is understood to have agreed personal terms with Trabzonspor. That remains a developing negotiation, not a completed transfer. 6

The window has stopped producing daily announcements. The next evidence will come from roles on the pitch: Arsenal's finishing options, Villa's speed of adaptation, Liverpool's defensive cover, Everton's ability to make a coherent squad work, and Tottenham's final decision on Richarlison.
