6:00 a.m. live briefing: Vancouver clouds, B.C. wildfire damage and fresh Gulf strikes
Vancouver starts mostly cloudy while wildfire damage outside Metro Vancouver and new infrastructure and casualty updates from the Gulf and Russia shape the morning watchlist.
Metro Vancouver
Vancouver International Airport was mostly cloudy at 6:00 a.m. PDT, with a temperature of 14.9°C, an east-southeast wind at 8 km/h and visibility of 32 km. Environment Canada forecast a 40% chance of morning showers, clearing this afternoon, a high of 22°C and west winds reaching 20 km/h later in the day. This is an airport observation, not a citywide incident report. 1
Wider B.C.
The latest provincial picture available before this cutoff showed 94 active wildfires as of 6:30 p.m. Friday, with 78 reported in the previous 24 hours and 71 suspected to have been started by lightning. 2
The named evacuation and damage sites are outside Metro Vancouver. Near Boston Bar in the Fraser Canyon, seven buildings were reported destroyed, including four homes or seasonal cabins, while an evacuation order covered 450 properties. Near Pemberton, the Signal Hill wildfire had prompted an evacuation alert and an order for One Mile Lake Park to support firefighting operations. 2
World
Gulf conflict
A 5:53 a.m. PDT update from the Associated Press said the United States and Iran had exchanged strikes against military and infrastructure targets around the Strait of Hormuz. In Kuwait, officials reported damage to a desalination plant and an oil facility; the plant fire put several generating units offline, and Kuwait briefly closed its airspace before airlines began rearranging flights. Kuwait says desalination supplies about 90% of its drinking water. 3
Reuters reported in a 4:39 a.m. PDT update that Kuwait International Airport operations had been suspended after repeated missile and drone threats, and that Kuwait Petroleum Corporation said one of its facilities sustained major damage and some people were injured. Claims by Iran's Revolutionary Guard about destroying aircraft at a Jordanian base and striking a Bahraini air base were not independently verified by Reuters. 4
Russia-Ukraine war
An Associated Press update at 4:27 a.m. PDT said Russian officials reported eight deaths and more than 60 injuries after overnight Ukrainian drone attacks. The officials said seven night-shift workers died at a Wildberries warehouse in Kotovsk and that another warehouse fire in Elektrostal left 37 people injured, one of whom later died. Russia's Defence Ministry said it intercepted 379 drones across 19 regions, Crimea, the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. The casualty and interception figures remain Russian official claims as reported by AP. 5
