Player Story: Bukayo Saka - the answer arrived too late for England

Three days before Bukayo Saka scored a World Cup hat-trick, he watched England's semi-final defeat by Argentina from the bench. Thomas Tuchel's team led for most of the night, then lost 2-1 after a late collapse. Saka warmed up but never entered. 1

That decision did not become easier to defend in Miami. Saka started England's bronze final against France and scored three times in a 6-4 win, first punishing a loose moment after Marcus Rashford's saved effort, then finishing a break, then restoring England's cushion from the penalty spot. But the numbers still make the omission sting. Saka finished with three goals and three assists in 357 minutes, a goal involvement every 59.5 minutes. ESPN also recorded his frustration in plain language: he had started only two of England's first seven matches, and did not play at all against Argentina. 3

The fair reading is uncomfortable for both sides. Tuchel had a fitness decision to make, and Morgan Rogers did create England's opening goal in the semi-final. Saka then gave the strongest possible reply: not a complaint, but three goals in a match England had every reason to treat as an afterthought.

England still finished third, their best World Cup result since 1966. Saka's hat-trick cannot rewrite the semi-final. It does make the question impossible to avoid: if England had needed one more moment in Atlanta, why was their most explosive wide player watching?
