WHO's 13-case / three-death M/V Hondius count still controls the global read, and no WHO, CDC, or ECDC source has moved the ship-linked Andes virus event back into active escalation. WHO says all identified contacts completed 42-day follow-up without additional secondary cases, which it treats as interruption of transmission and outbreak containment. 1
The useful addition for July 13 is source-investigation detail, not a new case count. Argentina's ANLIS Malbrán now reports that wild rodents sampled around Malargüe, Mendoza, as part of the M/V Hondius source reconstruction had no hantavirus-specific antibodies; in Tierra del Fuego, a separate Abrothrix-associated hantavirus signal was found, but it differs from the virus detected in the cruise-linked human cases. 2 3

The ship event is closed, but the source question is still open

WHO's July 2 Disease Outbreak News remains the controlling document because it gives the highest-confidence case count and risk assessment. It reports a 23% case fatality ratio in the outbreak count, with ten hospitalized cases overall, eight discharged, and two still under treatment as of July 2. 1 No newer WHO or country source located for this briefing changes those patient-status details, so the two-treatment line should not be updated by inference.
The source question is different. WHO says infection of the initial cases was likely acquired on land before embarkation, while the exact source and route of exposure remain undetermined. It also says genomic sequencing of Andes virus samples from surveillance cases in Chile and Argentina is expected to help clarify the source and transmission chain. 1
ANLIS Malbrán's Mendoza update directly bears on that unresolved point. The field team worked in areas around Malargüe because epidemiological reconstruction placed the Dutch tourist couple there before the cruise. The operation used more than 250 traps in places including Llancanelo wetland reserve, Bardas Blancas, Las Loicas, and Caverna de las Brujas; the captured rodents did not show specific antibodies against hantavirus, and the main Andes virus reservoir species, Oligoryzomys longicaudatus, was not identified in the captures. 2
That does not prove Mendoza was irrelevant. It says this specific sampling round did not find serological evidence in the captured rodents. The practical read is narrower: the Malargüe hypothesis lost support from this field sample, while the broader land-exposure question remains open.

Tierra del Fuego is an ecological signal, not the ship source

The Tierra del Fuego result is easy to misread. ANLIS says five Abrothrix rodents captured around Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego National Park had hantavirus-specific antibodies, and molecular work identified a previously undescribed viral variant related to Andes virus within Orthohantavirus andesense. 3
The same notice makes the limiting point: the variant found in Tierra del Fuego rodents is different from the virus observed in human cases associated with M/V Hondius. ANLIS therefore says the investigation ruled out the analyzed rodents as the source linked to the cruise event. 3
For surveillance, that still matters. It expands the ecological map of hantaviruses in southern Argentina, but it should not be counted as a new human outbreak or a resolved origin for the cruise cluster. The correct category is reservoir intelligence: useful for future sampling and regional risk mapping, not a change in the M/V Hondius case count.

Argentina's endemic season remains the quantitative watchpoint

Argentina's national bulletin index still shows BEN 815 for epidemiological week 25 as the latest visible issue, and its topic list does not include a dedicated hantavirosis chapter. 11 BEN 812 therefore remains the latest detailed national hantavirosis update available in the official bulletin set used here.
BEN 812 uses the national surveillance system to classify confirmed hantavirosis cases and compares seasonal periods from July of one year to June of the next. It reports one new case since BEN 811, from El Galpón in Salta, bringing confirmed calendar-year 2026 cases to 48 by epidemiological week 22. 7
The stronger seasonal signal is the 108-case 2025-2026 corridor through week 22. BEN 812 says the national accumulated curve sat above the outbreak threshold during almost the whole analyzed period, with the Center region above the outbreak threshold throughout the period and notifications in Buenos Aires, Entre Ríos, and Santa Fe. 7 Northern Ireland's July 10 horizon scan carries the same Argentina season as an international watch item and lists 108 cases including 36 deaths for July 2025-June 2026. 8
The distinction matters for the daily count. Argentina can be above its seasonal baseline while the ship-linked Andes virus event is contained. Those are related only through ecology and investigation, not through a shared case series.

International alert posture remains quiet

ECDC's public week 28 report is negative evidence for a European escalation. The report covers July 6-10 and names several active threats, but it does not list hantavirus among the public summary topics. 4 That does not mean Europe has no sporadic hantavirus infections; Puumala virus and other Old World hantaviruses remain endemic in parts of Europe. It means ECDC is not presenting hantavirus as a current cross-border threat in that weekly package.
CDC's public materials are also in closure posture. Its June 24 transcript says the U.S. monitoring period ended with no monitored person developing hantavirus disease, while CDC scientific work related to the outbreak continued through field work with Argentine partners. 5 The archive status of the FAQ page reinforces that the public-facing U.S. response is no longer being treated as an active live page. 6
The UK/Northern Ireland horizon-scan source is useful because it shows how a public-health agency can keep hantavirus visible without declaring a new incident. Its July 10 page places the M/V Hondius item under global horizon scanning, says WHO considers the outbreak over, and separately records Argentina's seasonal burden and the Tierra del Fuego rodent finding. 8

Science watch: useful topics, limited extractable detail

The literature signal is active, but it should not be over-read. PubMed lists Hantavirus infection in returned travellers: data from the GeoSentinel Network, published online July 6 in Journal of Travel Medicine, with keywords including Andes virus, outbreak, surveillance, and travel. The PubMed record has no abstract available, and the publisher page did not yield readable text in this run. 9
PubMed also lists Hantavirus - Once Again in the News, published online July 8 in Clinics in Dermatology, but this record also has no abstract available. 10 Those two entries belong on the watch list, not in the evidence base for today's case count.
Two other research items are more interpretable. A Clinical Infectious Diseases systematic review page describes seven Andes virus healthcare exposure events, 118 healthcare personnel exposures, eight infections, and four deaths; that makes infection prevention and occupational-risk assessment a live issue even after the cruise event closes. 12 An open-access Cureus review published July 7 frames M/V Hondius as an operational maritime biosecurity stress test and emphasizes that, without licensed vaccines or curative antivirals, management still depends on early risk recognition, diagnostics, evacuation, and supportive care. 13
The caution is straightforward: reviews can sharpen preparedness questions, but they cannot replace official case notifications, sequencing reports, or surveillance tables.
The next material update would be one of five concrete signals: a WHO or national-authority revision to the 13-case / three-death count; a fresh status update on the two patients WHO still listed as under treatment on July 2; a readable Argentina bulletin after BEN 815 with a hantavirosis chapter; a Chile or Argentina sequencing report that links or excludes additional candidate exposure sites; or a new CDC/ECDC/WHO risk communication that reopens operational monitoring.
Until then, the July 13 posture is stable: no new international escalation, the cruise-linked event remains contained, and Argentina's ecological and seasonal surveillance remains the main place where new hantavirus information is likely to appear first.
