Marvel Spotlight: Three side roads that slipped past the main line

The Order, X-Men Fairy Tales, and The Last Avengers Story all sit just off Marvel's main road: one is firmly Earth-616, one has no assigned universe number, and one lives in a labeled alternate future.

Matt Fraction and Barry Kitson's 10-issue series ran from 2007 to 2008, growing directly out of the post-Civil War Fifty State Initiative. 12

The hook is the team's deadline: California's official heroes can be fired at any time, and surviving a full year means mandatory retirement. Hank Pym's genomech technology gives them powers modeled on the Greek pantheon. It is a compact 616 story about institutions, branding, and heroes who are never allowed to settle into a status quo. 3

C. B. Cebulski and Sana Takeda's four-issue 2006 miniseries recasts X-Men stories as folktales rather than continuing a normal superhero arc. 45

The first issue turns Cyclops into a Momotaro-like Peach Boy; later parts rework the Xavier–Magneto relationship, Cyclops and Jean Grey, and Gambit and Rogue through different story traditions. Marvel Database lists the four-issue run but assigns no universe number, so this belongs in the fringe bucket rather than confirmed 616. 6

Peter David and Ariel Olivetti's two-issue prestige miniseries arrived in 1995 under Marvel's darker Alterniverse line. Marvel Database places it on Earth-9511. 78

Kang finds a record of the Avengers' downfall centuries later, travels back, and kills the replacement team with a nuclear strike on Avengers Mansion. Hank Pym then assembles another team to face Kang, Ultron, and the wreckage left behind. This is the Avengers as a genuine bad ending: two issues, no reset button, and a future that refuses to behave like a standard event epilogue.
