A water outage is not the moment to discover your household sanitation plan is "vibes and one sad paper towel". This four-card set builds one practical hygiene box for the first 3 days: safe water for hands and teeth, bathroom backup supplies, and a bleach plan that does not accidentally become a chemistry experiment.
Card 1 — The box
Pack the boring things that keep a home livable: soap, hand sanitizer, moist towelettes, garbage bags, plastic ties, toilet paper, personal hygiene items, disinfecting wipes, paper towels, and one clearly labeled unscented household bleach bottle. FEMA lists moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties for personal sanitation, and also recommends soap, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, and personal hygiene items in an emergency supply kit.1
Card 2 — Water budget
Start with at least 1 gallon of water per person per day for 3 days; CDC says that stored emergency water supports drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, and other uses.2 If tap water is unsafe, use bottled, boiled, or treated water for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene.3
Card 3 — Hands + bathroom
Put handwashing first: safe water plus soap when available, and alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol when soap and water are not readily available.4 Add bathroom backup basics from the kit list — moist towelettes, garbage bags, plastic ties, toilet paper, and personal hygiene items — because "we'll figure it out later" is not a sanitation system.1
Card 4 — Clean-up rules
Clean surfaces with soap and water first; disinfecting works better after dirt and impurities are removed.5 If using bleach for hard-surface disinfection, CDC says to use regular unscented household bleach in the 5%-9% sodium hypochlorite range, mix 5 tablespoons per gallon or 4 teaspoons per quart of room-temperature water when the label has no directions, keep the surface visibly wet for at least 1 minute, make a fresh diluted solution daily, and never mix bleach with other cleaners.6
Tiny assignment: put the hygiene items in one labeled bin this week. Future You deserves a bathroom plan with fewer improvisational choices.
