5 Pantry & Fridge Hacks With Things You Already Own

A five-card pantry and fridge reset using file organizers, soda boxes, magazine files, a metal file rack, and a six-pack holder to calm kitchen storage without power tools or chemical cleaners.

Start with the swipe cards: each hack uses a pantry, fridge, or cabinet item you may already have, and none require power tools or chemical mixing.

Hack #1: File organizer bags

Mount or set a file organizer near your pantry door and slide reusable totes or paper grocery bags into the slots. HGTV recommends file organizers as shopping-bag holders because they keep bags upright and easy to grab instead of forming a loose pile. Use removable hooks if you mount it, and check that the organizer does not block the door from closing. 1

Hack #2: Soda-box can rack

Turn an empty soda-can box into a pantry can dispenser: lay cans sideways in the box, label the front, and cut a back opening so older cans rotate forward first. HGTV notes that soda boxes can make canned goods tidier and less topple-prone than loose stacks. Cut cardboard slowly, away from your hands, and skip dented or bulging cans. 1

Hack #3: Magazine-file produce

Use a metal mesh magazine file on a pantry shelf for garlic and onions. HGTV points out that the open design lets the vegetables breathe and makes it easy to see what you have. Keep the file in a cool, dry, ventilated spot, and avoid sealing alliums in plastic bags. 1

Hack #4: File rack lid sorter

Set a metal file organizer inside a cabinet and slot pot lids, cutting boards, or baking sheets upright. Reader's Digest describes this as a quick way to stop flat kitchen pieces from becoming a cabinet pile; it also suggests rubber shelf liner or hook-and-loop tape if the organizer slides. 2

Hack #5: Six-pack fridge corral

Before tossing a six-pack holder, place it in the refrigerator door and use the compartments to group small condiment bottles. Reader's Digest says this keeps little bottles from tipping over when the door opens and closes. Wipe the cardboard clean first, replace it if it gets damp, and do not use it for leaky containers. 2
