Midnight live briefing: Vancouver storm follow-up, B.C. evacuation and Iran-Gulf escalation
A midnight PDT briefing with Vancouver’s latest airport observation, a 139-strike storm follow-up, an active evacuation order outside Metro Vancouver, and new attributed Iran-Gulf and Vietnam flood updates.
Live status
Cutoff: 12:00 a.m. PDT, Saturday, July 18, 2026. Vancouver’s latest available airport observation is from 11:00 p.m. Friday. Outside Metro Vancouver, an evacuation order remains in force around Big Bar Lake and Meadow Lake. Internationally, Iran-Gulf attacks and shipping claims remain contested, while a flash flood in northern Vietnam has killed at least four people.
Metro Vancouver
Vancouver: 11 p.m. observation was partly cloudy at 16.8°C
Environment Canada’s latest Vancouver International Airport reading before the cutoff was 11:00 p.m. PDT: partly cloudy, 16.8°C, easterly winds at 10 km/h, and 32 km visibility. This is an airport observation, not a citywide incident report. 1
Storm follow-up: 139 lightning strikes were recorded Thursday night
A CTV News follow-up says Environment and Climate Change Canada recorded 139 lightning strikes across the region over about two and a half hours, from roughly 9:00 to 11:30 p.m. Thursday. Meteorologist Jenn Cowall described it as one of the area’s biggest lightning storms of the past decade and the biggest since 2024. A home fire was reported on Dovercourt Road in Lynn Valley, but the District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services said it could not confirm lightning as the cause; CTV reported no major damage or injuries. This is a follow-up to Thursday night’s storm, not a new overnight alert. 2

Fiftynine Creek fire: evacuation order expanded around Big Bar Lake and Meadow Lake
EmergencyInfoBC said the Thompson-Nicola Regional District expanded the evacuation order at 7:30 p.m. PDT for properties around Big Bar Lake, the Big Bar Lake Park campground and specified addresses along Big Bar, Isadore, Marriot, Sharptail, Dog Creek, Lake and Meadow Lake roads. The official page identifies the fire as Fiftynine Creek (V40897), about 2.1 km northwest of Isadore Road, and lists it as out of control. People under the order must leave immediately. If safe, the stated route is east on Big Bar Road to Highway 97; alternate westbound routes are listed if the eastern route is unsafe. 3
CTV News reported the order covered 107 addresses and that the fire measured 688 hectares as of 5:22 p.m. Friday. Those figures are from the report’s cited B.C. Wildfire Service and regional-district updates; the official public order remains the controlling source for evacuation instructions. 4

Iran renews Gulf attacks; maritime claims remain unresolved
Reuters reported renewed Iranian attacks on U.S. Gulf allies after a seventh straight night of U.S. strikes on Iranian military sites and logistics infrastructure. Reuters said the U.S. described a naval blockade and reported redirecting four commercial vessels, disabling one and boarding another. Iran said four vessels were stopped, while a separate Iranian report that two tankers exploded and caught fire was labelled false by the U.S. Those shipping claims are not independently resolved. 5
The same report said Iranian media, citing a local official, reported strikes on power facilities and desalination pumps in Jask that cut drinking water to villages. Reuters also reported that Iranian media said three people were killed and eight wounded in attacks in Hormozgan province, while noting the claims’ attribution. 5
Northern Vietnam: flash flood kills four, four remain missing
At least four people were killed, four were missing and seven were injured after a flash flood hit Muong Than village in Lai Chau province, Reuters reported, citing Vietnam News Agency. The report said landslides and flash floods since Wednesday also damaged roads, power grids and hundreds of homes and inundated 238 hectares of crops. More heavy rain, locally up to 250 millimetres, was forecast for northern Vietnam. 6
